Air quality in Bangkok and vicinity slightly better today
Peabody replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Misleading. μg is not micron(s). It is a measure of mass. Air particle concentration is not measured in mass units, it is measured as # of particles of whatever per unit volume. μm is the size of the particles in question, 2.5 microns and less being the most damaging. As of 13:19 today, the AQI for BKK is 79. AQI measures 5 different indicators of pollution, not just PM2.5. -
Last year, in Phuket, I went to transfer <100,000 THB from my SCB acct to my Amerikan bank acct. My records show a deposit from overseas every month for the last 6 years, over 70 deposits from my social security. I had to fill-out a form asking for their frigging permission!! 2 days later, they denied it.

Thai farmers warned against smuggling uncertified Vietnamese rice strains
Peabody replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Thais have given up on the rice competition. If we cannot win, we will no longer play, and then the world can't see what LOSERS we are. As usual, sat on their laurels until they became FAILURES. No way they can develop new, fast-grow strains and get them out to farmers before the next planting season. "...the Department of Rice’s inability to certify walk and chew gum...". Why not? WTF do these clowns do? 2 years ago, the latest data I could find, showed a budget of 89 BILLION BAHT!! From a local source, announcing that MFP were launching an investigation into Rice Dept: "However, on May 9, the department increased its requested budget for the fair in Bangkok to 5 million baht, saying it would extend the event to three days instead of two, Karoonpon said. “The details in the new budget request were also suspicious,” he said. The department raised the cost of organising the exhibition from 400,000 to 1 million baht, and increased the award for rice farmers who had demonstrated extraordinary performances from 100,000 to 500,000 baht, he explained. The complaint also asked Move Forward to investigate the transparency of the selection of event organisers, saying the department had not used the standard e-bidding procedure. Instead, it used a method that took prices submitted by selected contractors. However, only one contractor submitted bids, Karoonpon said. “Based on the selection documents, four organisers were invited to submit bids, but only one actually submitted [them] and won the contract in all three locations. This company has a long record of working with the Rice Department,” Karoonpon explained. “Furthermore, the contract was signed on May 29, suspiciously close to the date of the first event, on June 5, despite the department having months to plan for it,” he added." -

Phuket extends pub and bar hours to boost tourism and employment
Peabody replied to webfact's topic in Phuket News
Possible hidden benefit: Fewer non-drinkers, pedestrians, open street stalls on the road at 0400, so better chance of taking out one of their own, rather than innocent civilians. -
Sheryl- do you know if this can be diagnosed with a barium x-ray? I'm asking for a 30-year old woman who has recurring GERD and a lot of pain if one presses a finger right at the base of the sternum. Gaviscon gives her relief from the heartburn for about an hour. Might Pattaya General Hospital be a place for this (the public hospital on Soi Buakhow)?

Phuket extends pub and bar hours to boost tourism and employment

How will this boost employment rates 20-30%? It's just going to be the same <disgruntled> employees working longer hours for the same <crpa> pay. -

Thailand ranks bottom of the pile with ASEAN English score
Peabody replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I taught at the only Singaporean government-sponsored school outside of Singapore, in Aberdeen, Hong Kong. The students were brilliant. Best I've ever seen, after teaching in 6 different countries. Thailand was the worst, by far. The so-called "Singapore ..." schools in Vietnam were crap, but still better than any Thai secondary schools. -
