  1. Regarding visa exempt visa run at Mae Sot:  I am reading different accounts, and would really appreciate an authoritative report, preferably form someone who has had recent experience.  I had my original 30 day visa renewed for another 30, and now I need to do a visa run. I was hoping to do a one day run to Mae Sot/Myanmar and back to Chiang Mai. I have not done any of these runs in the last 2 years. I do not have a METV. I have read I can get a 30 day visa exempt and I have read I can not at Mae Sot.   What is the real story.

  4. I was reading  posting that indicated if i want to extend my original 30 day tourist visa another 30 days, one of the forms required is a form to be signed by my landlord, property owner, etc. I live pretty much hotel to hotel. moving every few days looking for the perfect abode. (No luck so far.) I doubt the staff will sign anything here at the hotel I am at now as they are the rudest people.  Has anyone else ever been in this predicament an how did they solve it/  Thanks

400 baht is a bit steep for that kind of shakedown.  The normal 'gratuity' is half that .

A good point for you boys to remember is to always speak English to the BIB.  They will invariably get tired of hassling with you and cut you loose much sooner than if Farang Thai is spoken.

The cop that pulled me over was actually an Aussie.

So if one's home country license is  valid ,  what is international Driver License for ?

Really, international drivers license is such a scam. In America, I go down to AAA and I pay them something like $10 and they give me the international drivers permit. There is no test nothing, I just have to show my US license.

  7. I was pulled over at a place traffic stop and was given  a 400 baht ticket becauseI did not have  Thai or International Driver,s license. I thought the Geneva Convention of 1966 allowed for one's home country license to be valid provided it had a picture ID.  What's changed? Is this an illegal racket or what? BTW, the stop was right before the gas station on east side of Thae Pae Gate.

  8. Not so happy new year for this family, money =route of all evil.R.I.P

The "love" of money is known as the root of all evil. Many great things can be achieved with money for the less privileged and the sick in all societies if used properly..... R.I.P.

I love making money, and I don't fancy giving it away to others. Call me selfish but i seen how the welfare state works. This is why helping those close to you works better at least you know that there is need and can steer them a bit. Not like in the welfare state where you are robbed by taxes. Those taxes are then spend on cushy jobs for social workers and money is given to those that don't want to work.

I feel sorry for these people the family should have helped them but they probably had their own problems. Personally I do see suicide (for myself) as a way out (think terminal ill... destitute no quality of life). No religion or morals keeping me from it (unless I had kids)

So you don't think a welfare state would have helped these people?

You don't think that the whole point if a welfare state is to help families like this who have no one to help them?

You don't think that this sort of tragedy can be prevented by a properly functioning welfare state?

I am in the mental health field, for 25 years and the abuse just gets worse and worse, in USA.. The general public had no idea

  9. All Apple products are more expensive in Thailand, about 20 %. As others have said, no problems plugging in computers with their adaptors, but I had

a WaterPik ( which is definitely not available in Chiang Mai ) I brought over from USA and plugged it in and it burnt out the motor and blew the fuse in the hotel room. So the lesson for me is, outside of computers, anything that has a motor I will use a converter.

  10. Google 'Mexico vs thailand' cost of living. I think the site is called numbeo.com but it breaks down the difference in cost of living from Levi's-Rent-milk, etc

May I ask why you have decided to pick thailand? Currently, this is the worst state of Thailand that I've personally seen and I'm currently looking to move away. Why you want leave Mexico?

what is making this the worst state nowadays?

  11. Yes, I have been there, done that. If she is letting you off with paying half,I would say be happy, and expect to occasionally chip in more, so it may actually come down to 65/35 %.

Yes, I too sometimes conclude that saving money is an anathema to many Thais, having the attitude that if you have it spend it. I gave money to a friend, with the ideas she keep it for her daughter' s education, but she spent it on what she felt were more immediate needs- air conditioning. Do we judge? up to you
