  1. Is the old drive totally unreadable at all? Have you still got the drive? The reason I ask is if you can set the drive as a slave, boot up the computer and use 'Recuva' to see if that can recover any files off the drive.

Recuva (google it) is free, very simple to use and could save a lot of progs off you drive unless the drive is totally sh*gged. And because it is free it costs nothing but a bit of your time.

  2. Stop and search in the UK (depending on the colour of your skin?). That has happened many times over the years. Sometimes they actually stop you because you look suspicious :whistling:

Why should it be any different over here? Because it is near that time of year when they are going to be needing extra funds? That time will soon be upon us for party money. But as others have said they are being extra vigilant at the moment because of threats and potential trouble.

As they seem to have let you go with no payment or particular hassle seems to me there is no problem.

  3. Anyway - the Water Board people are coming around tomorrow to install a new meter - I'll let you know how it affects my monthly bills.

They came around yesterday. They pulled out the meter, opened it up and cleaned it out and now it is working perfectly. I have the added bonus of better water pressure too.

I took a reading and I'll have to wait and see what my usage will be. I was being charged the default price of 300 baht and my water is charged at 15 baht per m3 so I'll be able to use 666 litres per day or 20,000 litres (20 m3) per month to break even.

Thanks to all for your input.

    Nice one.

  4. cant beleive people who live here, pay people to tax and insure a car, why not simply go and learn how to do it, its not rocket science. is there no feel to learn and understand how to do the basic things in life here with out handing over addtianl cash to do some thing a 12 year old could do.

Transport Office near Regents School on the 36/7 near Marbrachan

dont see where the OP asked about vehicle inspections so its just a trip to the land transport office

i have done it myself before, i learned from that experience, by doing so i found i had much better things to do with my time and now i pay someone else to go.......

    I agree with timekeeper here.

Why go all the way out to the Land transport office if you can pop round the corner and get it done for 50 Baht service charge? It has nothing to do with DIY, and more to do with convenience and maybe a lot less hassle with traffic.

  5. Other computers on the same network are working? How many computers are linked to this network?

Try disconnecting the other computer(s) on the network and then run the laptop. If the laptop does not freeze up the problem is with your settings or a conflict with one of the other computers on the network or the wifi router.

If more than one other computer is linked to this network add the other computers to the network one at a time. If the first computer added to the network freezes the laptop try another and see if it gets the same result.

  6. Yes it was a good show last night. I was surprised how quiet it was. Had a couple of beers in the Poker bar then wandered over to the beach where there was plenty of space to sit or stand and watch the fireworks. Back to the bar before the next event and the same room available. Even beach road seemed relatively quiet but World Bar and Poker bar were heaving with bodies.

Motorbike taxi charged the same 40 Baht as usual to take me down to Soi 8 off beach road.

  7. What kind of phone does your friend have?

Regardless, we're talking two different kinds of executables, one that runs on the PC, the other on the phone.

Just because it had stored on it some infected files that could have damaged a PC running Windows does not mean the virus was active on the device -- like someone said above, it was like files on a USB drive.

A nokia. Not sure of the model but not a new fangled one.

No effect on the phone itself as the phone is working normally. I suspect they are computer virus as opposed to phone virus as I mentioned earlier. Seems they infected files were contracted via bluetooth as that phone has never been attached to the internet or a computer before.

  8. Here is another (different) problem.

All of a sudden my PC has developed a following glitch:

    a) when I want to delete a spam the little window asking me "are you sure" is jumping around like a flee.

I still manage, but it is very annoying.

    B) in my Messenger when trying to 'phone out' the little box for typing the phone out number when clicked on

clears only partially. The result is - I cannot phone out as the number does not get typed in.

I'm not a computer wiz, rather a 'computer bum'. All other functions are OK.

Did I catch a virus? a worm? My programs and Op System (Windows 7 Home Premium)were loaded by the guy I bought a computer from. But it worked OK so far. What is happening? Thanks for help in advance. :(

Have you run a full virus scan on your computer? Sounds very much like you do have a virus.

If you do not have anti virus get one. AVG free, or Avast amongst others are easy enough to download.

  9. Having done some research on the phone virus since making the original post I have discovered it is easy for one phone to pass a virus to another using Bluetooth. Using Bluetooth to transfer an already infected file will result in a virus infection on the receiving phone. If someone has downloaded an infected file from another source that virus is then transferred and as you execute the file yourself your phone is now infected. So you do not have to have been on the internet to have one or more viruses on your phone.

I will add that the infected phone in question still seemed to work normally. If the user had decided to connect to the internet at some future point in time then I can see that the infections might be activated.

Maybe an idea to connect your phone to the computer occasionally to check for any virus infection if you have transferred files from another phone and use anti-virus to clean the infections.

  10. I am not sure what you are trying, but with the good old

Windows File Explorer, you should be able to see the files on the USB

then just drag them to a suitable folder on your pc

    No special transfer program needed.

Unless you compressed the files in some way?

If so you need the same compression program to expand them again

What is the extension on the files .mp3 .zip .arc etc?

Windows file transfer that the OP has used does compress files before they are transferred to another drive. It gives the option for new computer or old computer. So if the OP opens Windows File Transfer he should be able to now transfer the files from his 'old' computer to the new one as this is the program he used in the first instance.

Windows file transfer that he is looking for is in Windows help and support on the new XP pro he has installed and not on the USB drive.

In effect he has to do the reverse of what he did initially.

Because the OP does not say what he has tried to do at this point makes it difficult to be able to help more.

  11. You have not said how you have tried to see or access the files.

Can you not use the files and transfer wizard on your XP pro? It gives you the option of 'New computer' and to transfer the files onto the new unit from a variety of sources.

Go into help and support off the start bar and type in File Transfer. There you get the option of using the wizard to do it.

  12. How busy do you think it will be Friday night? We're going for sure on Saturday as it seems to be the "big" day for the show...but considering driving out near Bali Hai pier to park Friday night for a short while to see the show.

Considering Beach Road will be closed off early and diversions in place Pattaya will more than likely be gridlocked on 2nd road, 3rd road and Sukhumvit. Pattaya Klang will be chaotic and expect the same for Pattaya Thai. Do you really want to take a car into that lot to park up and see the show?

Surely there will be bands on down at the pier as well so where you expect to park is anyone's guess. I am going to use m/c taxis as they tend to know their way around the diversions better and then there is no hassle to park.

I think you can expect to be crushed, pushed and generally battered anywhere along beach road for those considering going.

    edit typo

  13. Having connected a friends phone to my computer to download some photos and videos to put on CD., I was surprised at how many different viruses there were on the phone. The friends phone is never used on the internet from what I understand so they must have been transferred via bluetooth or similar. However they did get there, maybe sometimes it is worth a look to make sure your phone is clean of any virus infection.

All these viruses were picked up automatically by AVG and deleted.

  14. A whore in bed, well that's a little selfish and one sided, No? ( Typical sexist mores. ) When is she just to be a partner? Just a woman? I think western men having to travel to SEA to fulfill their requirements says much more about their selfish expectations than it does about western women no longer agreeing to the second tiered roles.

    I always liked the saying

"A good wife is a cook in the kitchen,a lady in public and a whore in bed."

The first to can be taught easily but the last needs the woman to have the inclination. If western women could compete most of us wouldnot be here.

If a man has to come all this way to get satisfaction in a relationship. Says a lot about western women I feel. And for the man to have to adopt some of the asian family practices, just shows are happy they are with what they have.

So when a man gives his GF as he may call her but to the thais she is his wife, a monthly allowance, he is just doing what all good asian men do. If he didnot pay he would be going against asian practice in the home and just be a problem.

The whore in bed part of the quote is harsh. More of a quote from the lads in the pub after a few beers talking of slappers. If you want a whore in your bed then surely it is down to your own attitude?

Surely it is far far better to make love to a woman and much more pleasurable. I think so anyway because true love-making can involve many little pleasures.

  15. Location makes a huge difference. We live upcountry and use rain water all during the rainy season. During the dry season (now) we buy it from the village. The cost is 3 baht per cubic meter so you can imagine it isn't much. The last bill was 66 baht.

Same here. When I lived up North I never seemed to pay more than 60 Baht a month.

Does not Pattaya have sewerage added on or into the bill and that pushes the price up?

  16. There are lots of wonderful Thai women who want farang husbands. Every time I am there on vacation and women find out I have a farang boyfriend and live in the west, they ask me to help them find a husband. These women aren't hookers nor are they so very high class that you have to be very rich or handsome either. They are sweet everyday women that work in hair salons, restaurants, stores and travel agencies.

So very true. It's depressing how many westerners come here and marry whores when there are so many good Thai women (better looking and better morals) who would like to marry them. I think it's a combination of the guy's low self-esteem and a lack of understanding of Thai society and culture.

Although times are changing, "good" women don't go to bars, don't drink and don't smoke.

What nonsense! Although they don't go to "farang bars", many of them certainly love to party and drink and even smoke.

    Agree 100%

  17. This is exactly the behavior you can expect from a prostitute,

and exactly what you don't have to put up with if you go for a normal girl

    Really?

I know several people who have had really bad sh*t after breaking up with "normal" women back in Europe. I myself have had real trouble back home from a woman I left. So this has nothing to do with prostitutes. It is down to the women and their temperaments. Here you have to add into the mix that we foreigners have less ability in general to be able to get the law to work for us and we are more liable to be deemed the ones made to pay.
