  1. You can also apply for new passports at one of the ACS Outreach visits they hold around the country periodically.

    No appointment needed.

If you attend a consular outreach, you can either hand over your old passport and pay to have them mail both passports to you by EMS or turn in a photocopy of the old passport ID page along with the application and they will email you when the new passport can be collected from the embassy in Bangkok. No appointment is necessary if you go to collect the new passport, but best to print out the email notice you receive.

Application can be filled out on line and printed to take with you. Make sure you bring photo exactly as described in the instruction. https://pptform.state.gov/

Complete Form DS-82 online but do not submit it electronically. Overseas applicants must PRINT the completed form and bring it to the appointment. (If you do not have access to the necessary technology, you may obtain a blank copy of the form in our office on your appointment date. Use of the blank version will lengthen processing time.)

Wish they did outreach in Korat.

There are many of us in or near Korat who would love to avoid the trip to the big mango.

Khon Kaen is no closer than BKK for us!

  2. I have read that there is a new law, regulation, or stipulation that they run a check and if you owe any unpaid taxes, your new passport will be denied.

I do know of Americans in Thailand that this could be a problem for.

I wonder what happens if you apply for a new passport, it is denied and you are not in America at the time.

If I recall, the last time I applied for a new passport, I had to turn in my old passport with the application.

Does this mean you could be stuck in a foreign country with no passport at all?

  3. I receive gifts, cake etc without prompting, though don't care much for birthdays/xmas, but thought is nice I guess. What sort of education level are we talking? The typical MO with many girls from a certain sector of Thai society is as it's your birthday, you should be making an effort by taking people out for lavish meals, etc, and the same again for theirs. The 'I'm live with you everyday' line is telling in that her staying with you is her input into the relationship and that is good enough in her eyes. I fear you are too weak with your woman and she is taking the Michael, though lots of blokes find themselves in this situation no doubt. A Thai male would not have it. If you are not happy, just walk.

    Happy Birthday.smile.png

Yeah poor education from a village. I thought a real country girl. And yes if I knew what I knew know I would have chosen more wisely and from a different socio economic group. Known her for 4 years. 2 living together in Australia but she changed greatly when we moved to Thailand. She had faults before that but generally I felt like the luckiest man on earth. I'm 50, shes 33. A bit of a difference but I'm not a broken down wreck and had 30's GFs back home so I'm not or wasn't a desperate old man looking for a payg mum. I've tried everything with her and despite evidence to the contrary I'm no idiot. She has so much to lose and for reasons not added here she would be in the sht deeply if I left her. Besides we have a kid. A professional would say I am enabling her by accepting the behavior but I have literally tried everything...it's just impossible ...she's just unpredictable and doesn't react the way a normal person would to warning signs. Tried walking out one day (its my place) and she went berserk. Didnt break anything but the potentials there. I should just jump in the pick up and dissapear for a few days but really wouldnt know what to expect when i got home. She packs her bag at least once every 2 weeks. Used to drive me crazy and id go and calm her down. Now I offer to help. She always ends up painting herself into a corner and looking foolish but she does it anyway. 100% like dealing with a hormonal teenager, probably worse. Cant sit down and talk with her reasonably it turns into a (one way) screaming match in 20 seconds. I wish I knew the answer? Like trying to deal with a suicide bomber that doesn't care about their own welfare.

" 100% like dealing with a hormonal teenager, probably worse."

A hormonal ,middle aged woman can be far more difficult than a hormonal teenager.

    How old is she now?

Maybe it's time to brace your self for it to get worse...or head for the hills and hide!

Thailand is full of sweet ,attractive women..and you don't really need to marry them..

Heck, you can even rent one if that serves your needs better!

  4. Birthdays are not much of a big deal to adult Thai people.

Even the birthday cake and singing their version of the Happy Birthday song are pretty newly adopted customs from the west.

I understand your frustration, I feel it too, and my birthday is next month.

I am looking forward to nothing on my birthday.

    By they way...

I wish you a Happy Birthday.

  5. Critical thinking, as long as it's not about the Junta

So many on who post on this topic can not seem to grasp the reality of the situation.

It is O.K. to think critically about the current government, or " junta" as you have referred to it.

It is not O.K. to publicly express those thoughts.

    It's pretty simple...is it clear?

No, it's not clear at all. But let me see if I can dumb it down for myself as you seem to think anybody who expresses an opinion or view that doesn't exactly match your own views needs some kind of education/ qualification or clarification from yourself. By the way, who did appoint you in this educational role or have you assumed it based on your own high regard of yourself?

    1. Critical thinking good.

    2. Freedom of speech not good if it means expressing your critical thinking regarding the Junta.

    There, is that okay?

You are so close to understanding that I am proud of you!

    Try this:

Critical thinking and freedom of speech are to unrelated issues.

Critical Thinking is a teaching method never used in Thailand up to this point.

In this case, it is not a method of thinking.

Freedom of speech is not a right in this country

I'm glad to have been of assistance.wai.gif

  6. There is a limb on the lines somewhere causing a short sever enough to blow the fuses to your neighbors lines but only a "brown out" to yours.

It has a lot to do with the power flow in the circuits and where the fuses are located.

When the fault is located and the lines reenergized your power and that of your neighbor's will be restored.

Considering the winds we have had recently anf the amount of vegetation in Thailand I am very impressed that we do not experience many more power outages than we do.

In a past life, my job was to investigate vegetation caused power outages for a very large power company ( PG&E) in California.

Since I have been living in Thailand, I have been amazed at how reliable the power is here.

  7. Trump's biggest appeal is that he says what he believes, rather than toeing party lines. This must make him unique in the US - or just about anywhere else.

"Trump's biggest appeal is that he says what he believes, "

    Incorrect.

His biggest appeal is that he says what he thinks his base ( the uneducated, and uninformed, who he as stated that he loves ) wants to hear.

He has also said that he keeps informed about what " the people" want by listening to radio ( extremist right wing ) talk shows.

The man is a marketing genius and it may win him the presidency.

But good marketing does not qualify a person to be a President.

tTat requires knowledge of how the government works and what a President can and can not do.

Trump does not have that knowledge.

    Good luck America!

  8. 20k sounds cheap. My school's EP is 34k per term. Last term all the western teachers quit, leaving only 8 Filipinos and one overworked & underpaid Chinese to teach English.

At my daughter's school ( where I was once a NES teacher ) they have mostly Philippine people teaching English now..

Philippine people wil work for lower pay than Native English Speakers will.

They are good people , but are difficult to understand, guess at the pronunciation of many English words, ( onion is pronounced as Oh- nee-eye on, and Rhino as Ree-no, like the city in Nevada) and are not extremely motivated..

They make a good effort at teaching, in the classroom and create good lesson plans, but any time not designated as classroom time ( over 50% of their paid time ) is spent hiding in an office eating or sleeping, and not out communicating with students in the English language as it should be.

Last year the school hired two young Chinese woman to teach Chinese to the students.

Both Chinese teachers spoke English far better than any of those who were teaching English.

They were both very diligent, organized ,and motivated, working many hours they were not paid for helping students who had the desire to really learn to speak Chinese.

The school asked one of the Chinese teachers to return this year and teach English

    She declined the offer.

  9. If an English program is managed solely by Thais of course it is likely to fail.

Find a good program run, at least at school level by well qualified (I don't mean they only posses a TEFL certificate) British teachers.

Discover how long the teachers have been at the school/program as that's a pretty good indicator of stability and good management.

Tutors may help some individuals as long as they are British native speakers but the classroom environment is more productive in terms of socialisation, skills, sharing and having fun while learning.

Try the British Council, they have in school programs.

I admire the pride of the British, but your pride is way outdated and stale.

If only Brits teach the language, the students will only learn the version of the language that those from a small island nation speak and understand.

The British are a small percentage of the people in the world that speak the language referred to as English.

With your unique pronunciations, spellings, expressions ( bloody this and all of that rot ) and various thick accents, it is difficult for many English speakers to understand.

With the extremely successful movie industry ( or cinema as Brits call it ) The American - west coast version of the language is the best understood and most used globally.

As I said before, I admire your pride.

Your country once dominated the world, before WWII

But that was over 70 years ago!

Cheerio! and all that bloody rot!

  10. Why do Thai banks talk about credit cards ? There are no credit cards in Thailand. No credit is advanced by the banks against the cards. The cards are secured by twice the "credit" limit being held by the bank.

That's only for foreigners. Any Thai with a job can get a credit card(or several), each with a credit limit of 2 to 3 times their annual income. My niece, a pharmacist at a govt. hospital has a credit limit of 4x her annual salary. Crazy, but true.

I have a proper credit card via UOB, with a credit limit of 3.5 times my monthly salary so not true.

Regarding the chip cards, Bangkok Bank have been issuing these for a while now but you could only use BKK Bank ATM's, maybe now i will be able to use other banks ?

    I agree.

It can be a great inconvenience when I can only use my BKK Bank ATM card at a BKK Bank ATM machine.

In some areas, the BKK Bank machines are few and far between.

Over all, I am pleased with the service from BKK Bank...but they really should resolve this issue.

  11. Remember he was the start of the economic disaster!

Not quite. The big economic debate in Bush vs. Gore 2000 was how to spend the budget surplus left by 8 years of Clinton.

And we have to give GW Bush credit.

He came up with ways to spend that surplus and trillions more!

Starting wars that did not need to be fought, and putting them on the credit card,

Putting the country in a position where the had to bail out all the major financial institutions.

Our great grandchildren will be paying for he creativity.

    The man is a genius!

    post-147745-0-53769200-1463400828_thumb.

  12. Good. People of a certain age know the facts, that Bill Clinton performed remarkably well on economic issues. Trump's low information followers long for the good old days of Henry Ford style fascist isolationism, minorities under the thumb of white men ... the real good old days are the ECONOMY under Bill Clinton.

Many American friends and colleagues told me the reason Bill Clinton got off when caught lying to the American people was because the economy was o k at the time. He could be forgiven for lying about Monica but would have been crucified if the economy was crap at the time.

However, something distasteful about a country that considers itself god fearing, whatever sect you like to be, moral, ethical and like lecturing other countries, electing a known liar as President, who will appoint her husband, also a known liar, to a key position in her administration. Both are in the pocket of Wall Street; both are mercenary. Dubious at best.

That's not suggesting the opposition is a wonderful choice either. Welcome America to the sort of choices we in Europe have had to put up with for years - who is the least worst rather than the best!

" electing a known liar as President,"

That is the goal of both parties.

Trump is no more honest than Clinton.

The big difference is that Trump doesn't know enough about how the government functions to even realize he lies are only fantasies.

Even the pentagon has stated that if Trump becoms Comander and Chiet, the pentagon would be obligated by the constitution to disobey him if he tries to do what he claims he will do.

    Both candidates are very dishonest.

One just has more experience in and knowledge of government than the other.

If a third candidate is not elected, the country and the world are in for a world of hurt.

If the majority of Americans elect either of these two, they will get what they deserve and regret it....

Regret it along with many other people of the world.

  13. ""And especially in places like coal country "

Coal country needs to be put to sleep along with the rest of the fossil fuel industry.

They are killing us all for the sake of easy profits,

and their corporations own Clinton.and many other law makers.and government officials...

While they avoid paying their fair share of taxes!

The same unskilled labor could be employed in the alternative power industry that is capable of supplying all of our power needs without producing poison.

This is what we get when we allow corporations to buy our lawmakers.

    Feel The Bern !

  14. Can't wait for October when Putin drops a bombshell that validates Trump and sinks Hillary. Watch for Putin to say Russia penetrated Clinton's computer server and then offers proof. Bye-bye Hillary and the Democrats.

Just imagine if H is disowned by her party T thinks he's got the election and then.....................B comes riding to the rescue as a third party candidate!!! whistling.gifclap2.gifclap2.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifbiggrin.pngwai.gif

    Wishful thinking.

and I wish it could happen that way.

But every day that passes, this becomes less likely

Every state has a deadline as to how late you can file as a third party candidate.

If you miss that deadline, you get no delegates from that state.

The deadline in Texas was last week, May 9th.

Many states have deadlines in June and July.

    About the deadlines :

The earliest one is Texas with a May 9 deadline. Were a candidate to miss this deadline they could forfeit the chance of winning Texas’ 38 electoral votes. The real difficulty with the calendar, however, is that if a candidate were to wait until the end of the Republican National Convention to decide to run as an independent, he would forfeit 175 electoral votes, and if a candidate were to wait until the end of the Democratic National Convention, he would forfeit 197 electoral votes. Deciding to run in reaction to a national convention outcome could easily restrict ballot access even further, as late deciders would be right up against a slew of filing deadlines that begin in late July and August.

I wish Bernie had filed as an independent a couple of months ago!

  15. Critical thinking !

Isn't being critical a massive No No these days ?

    No... not at all!!

Folks can do all the critical "thinking" they want without fear of repression.

It's just when they start writing, speaking, acting, meeting, clicking, etc. that where the trouble begins.

    whistling.gif

    Thank you so much!

I was starting to think that no TV members knew the difference between critical thinking and criticizing things!

I wonder how many know that "Critical Thinking" is actually the name of a reaching method used by most of the world outside Thailand, where students are encouraged to and expected to ask questions?

Thailand still uses the rote method of teaching where students are taught to just repeate like parrots and memorize what is fed to them.

This topic is about teaching methods, not freedom of speech or politics!

It has nothing to do with expressing your opinions about the government or anyone else.

    Thank you again!

  16. The government has been saying they want critical thinking taught in Thai schools for many years now.

The problem is in the higher education system itself.

New teachers, fresh out of the university, have never been exposed to critical thinking and have no idea of what it even is.

They are still being instructed on how to use the rote method of teaching in the universities.

As a result, teachers, both new and old are ignoring the governments instructions to start using the critical thinking method of teaching.

A change to using the critical thinking method needs to start at the top with the teachers.

They can not be expected to use a method of teaching that they have not learned themselves.

  17. The U.S. has basically cut off aid and support to Thailand since the democratically elected government was replaced.

This has only motivated Thailand to become closer to countries like China and North Korea.

I expect sanctions from the UN will result in the same reaction from Thailand.

  18. Thai teachers and school administrators have been doing all they can to reduce classroom time for many years.

Canceling classes to play games, practice dancing,, put on shows, celebrate any sort of "special day" they can imagine, meetings for teachers, visits from monks.. sport days and practicing for sport days....the list goes on and on.

When I was a teacher in Thailand it was very rare to go a full week without having classes canceled, sometimes full days of teaching canceled, and often with no previously notice.

This is not done to promote critical thinking.

This is done because teachers like to avoid teaching!

  19. Warren has been pretty critical of Hillary so I can't see her accepting the VP

    You are so wrong.

I don't thing up2u2 is wrong. I've seen interviews where Warren is annoyed with HRC.

One of the issues was something to do with credit card debt. Credit card companies want to be first in line to get paid (by deadbeat dads, for example), whereas Warren wanted ex-wives owed child support to be in line before CC companies. HRC heard Warren's take on that, and the two Clintons agreed (Bill was prez at the time) . However later; HRC sided with the CC, so it annoyed Warren.

Warren, like Bernie has integrity and cares about working Americans.

Hillary represents everything Warren is against....a corporate owned government.

I don't think Warren would sell out her values to get a do nothing job like VP for Hillary.

However, she would make a well matched running mate for Bernie and VP would not be a do nothing job for her under Bernie.

And if anything ever did happen to Bernie, she would fill the office with the same values and integrity that Bernie has ,and the country needs.

  20. You sound like a reasonable person.

Just use your head and common sense.

    you should be fine.

Enjoy your visit....and don't worry so much.

millions visit every year and have no problems.

Like anywhere in the world, some are unlucky and have problems and some are stupid and have problems.

    Be lucky and have fun.

It's an amazing place to experience for the first time!
