  1. My ARCHOS 80G9 has a compartment in the back that opens to a USB type port that accepts a dedicated 3G adapter sold (I'm told) only by Archos.

Since my tablet was purchased in the USA, the adapter was not on offer there because of bandwidth incompatibility. It is sold on their UK website for 45 pounds. I called the Archos office at Muang Tong Thani and was told they had them in stock but he was evasive on price. He did say an aircard would not work, but he would say that; wouldn't he?

Back in the US, my nephew fiddled a bit and got a thumb drive to play on this port so it does have USB functionality.

  2. Asians in particular are susceptible to "Asian Flush" as well as headaches from consuming alcohol. I get headaches from highly tannic red wine (Cabernet Sauvingion) but not from soft reds or whites.

Like caffeine and nicotine , alcohol is a poison of sorts and I think some people have highly active immune systems that overreact to perceived threats. This could be the case with you

Unless you are having some issues which you think are fixed with 4.0.x, or need some feature(s), then I would recommend sticking with 3.x and let others work through the kinks. I've used both 3.x and 4.0.x on a tablet and actually prefer 3.x.

If you want to wait for the official OTA release from Acer U.S.A. then there should be many ways to obtain this with the use of a VPN, tunnel or proxy. In theory, Acer should identify your unit as a U,S version and allow an OTA update from any IP address. I mean people do travel with these things.

I returned my ARCHOS 80G9 to 3.x from ICS after continuing problems with wi-fi connectivity that were making me nuts. This is an issue with Archos, not necessarily other brands but I will again suggest you check ACER forums before upgrading. It looks like it will take a while for these issues to be worked out. I agree with Lomatopo that 3.x works just fine.

  4. How about the aniol novo type thingies? Did you see any?

They seam to be decent and I need something for the kids to play angry birds on.... They keep on occupying my wifes ipad or my samsung far too long.

Sent from my GT-P7500 using Thaivisa Connect App

Didn't see that particular brand but there are a number of dealers selling 10" as well as 8" and 7" Chinese tablets....B2000 up to B8000

Angry Birds runs nicely on the 7" "MID".

  5. Can you share any details re: the exact model numbers of these units? Maybe from the box, or in Android, Settings, About phone, Model number.

The Aigopad M803 has excellent HW, and gets generally decent reviews.

The M802 is what I bought, the 803 I believe is 3D but not impressive. As I said, there was an initial firmware issue but quickly resolved. It is running Android 4.03; ICS. I forgot to mention, it has cameras front and rear. The front one is low resolution but ok for chat. The rear is 2 mp.

There are several kiosks selling the tablet: one with big Aigo signs on the main ground level sales floor. one in one of the ground level rear aisles. He also sells several other Chinese Brands including the 7" "MID" that I purchased for the neice. (I incorrectly called it "MOD" in my original post).

There is another dealer along the Mezz. railing and one behind the food court seating area. They all seem independent of one another. None would go below B6000 but I did get the case thrown in. I also saw them on display at TucCom in Pattaya.

There are several kiosks also selling 10" Chinese tablets running ICS in the B8000 range but I didn't check them out.

  6. I have an inexpensive ARCHOS 8" tablet running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sand.) that I purchased at STAPLES in the US for $215 and have been quite satisfied with.

My GF really took to it quickly and enjoys using it so we went to Pantip in search of one for her. Though Archos has an office in Thailand, none were on sale at either Pantip or Fortune. There was however a Chinese brand "AIGO" 8" tablet running ICS that at B6000, (tagged at B6999 but quickly dropped to B6000) seemed pretty decent. There wasn't much information available on the internet about AIGO but I played around with it for quite a while and could find no faults. When they agreed to throw in a nicely made fitted case I decided to take a chance and bought one.

At my apartment, we had a problem downloading apps so back the next day to Pantip where they re-set some firmware. Since then a week has passed with no problems at all. She's put on about 40 game, Thai news and entertainment apps along with a bunch of music and photos. Battery life runs about 7 hours running video games and the display, while no challenge to RETINA, is decent. The settings include a Thai font set; a bit difficult to find at first. The onscreen keyboard sucks big time;..small key areas with no space between so constant miss-taps. I hope to find a way to add a better keyboard. All in all, so far the Aigo has worked out pretty well, considering the price.

My GF's neice who just graduated from H.S. (1st in class) and is Uni. bound visited us while all this was going on. She went with us to Pantip and really liked a small 7" Android 4.0 tablet called "MOD", also Chinese, selling for B3000. I had wanted to give her a graduation gift so we took some time checking it out. It seemed to work pretty well so I bought it for her.

She is pretty computer savvy and soon knew more about it's capabilities than I knew about mine...she showed me a thing or two that I didn't know. The MOD had a much better built in keypad than the Aigo, operated smoothly and did all it was supposed to do. She has it upcountry now and is very happy with it. Not bad for $100

Both tablets are a bit shy in the memory dept. at 512K/4gigs but both also will take up to a 32G micro-SD outboard memory.

Time will tell if these tablets hold up to long term usage. I will report if anything significant happens with them in the future.

As I said before: so far, so good.

  7. To Welo and Nisa -

Many places around the world have single-trip fares (rather than being distance based) and sometimes they do include a transfer. For example, in Boston, you can buy a single-trip for the bus and get one free bus transfer or you can buy a single-trip fare on the train and get a free bus transfer (free train transfer across the lines as well). But you cannot buy a single trip bus ticket and get on the train without paying again.

San Francisco (MUNI) is similar in that you buy a single trip fare which is good for 90 minutes with one transfer amongst the MUNI system (buses, light rail, some trolleys). But if you want to use BART or the some of the cable cars you have to pay separate fares.

I was just in Boston for most of March and was told that there were no bus-to-bus transfers. I often used used the #66 from Harvard Sq. to So. Huntington, then changed to the #39 to JP. I asked several times and was always told "No free transfer." Curious.

  8. "Orient Thai owned ONE Boeing 747 that was blacklisted from International airspace (I think that its still at Ranong airport)"

In May, 2002 I flew from Taipei to HK on a tired looking China Airways 747-200. Three days later, the same aircraft disintegrated at 29k feet, 20 minutes after taking off from Taipei. Though still being flown by China Airways, both that and one other 200 series had been sold to Orient Thai.

The surviving 200 sat on the tarmac at Don Muang, painted white and unmarked for many years. I always wondered what happened to it.

You couldn't get me onto a 747-200 for any amount of money; I've used my luck up on those antiques.

The aircraft you are talking about had scraped its tale on landing when it was nearly new. It had been incorrectly repaired (the doubler plate was the wrong size and had the wrong number of rivets if my memory serves my right). It was always a ticking time bomb. It was not a inherent fault of the 747-200 that made it crash.

Didn't one in Japan have the same problem or have you confused the 2?

If you're talking about the one in Japan that crashed near mount Fuji, causing the largest single loss of life in a single crash by one plane, I think that lost part of its tail rudder.

There may have been others. BTW, i'm not an expert on this, i've just watched alot of Air Crash Investigation on Discoverysmile.png .

You are correct, this accident was profiled on "Air Crash Investigation" on Discovery. Not only was the repair done incorrectly, it was also never entered into the aircraft's maintenance logs, thus the repair was never inspected during subsequent overhauls.

There are reportedly over 150,000 individual parts in a 747. I don't care how thorough they claim their inspections are; they can't get 'em all. 30+ years is a lot of flying and a lot of stress and history has shown all to often, all it takes is one bolt, one frayed wire or one burnt out bulb to precipitate a disaster.

  9. "AIR UDON" is another somewhat misleadingly named bus company; operating out of Mor Chit to Udon Thani and Nong Khai.

I think the "Air" is used to call attention to the airline type, reclining seats they use on their VIP 24 seat buses.

I've heard some of them are actually putting "lie flat" seats in some buses.

What an interesting range of possibilities that opens for making the 8 hour trip a bit more entertainingrolleyes.gif

  11. A friend in the US gave me a 1st generation 16G i-phone he no longer used. I had it jailbroken and unlocked at MBK.

I've never used any mobile more complex than a call only Nokia candybar. Most ten year olds can run technological circles around me when it comes to phones.

I've been using it on my regular AIS account, not hooking up to Edge services. I have connected it to my home wi-fi but have done little with it. I-tunes remains an arcane mystery to me.

I'm not sure what service to upgrade to. I assumed it was 3G but AIS said it's not. Can somebody confirm? I thought all i-phones were 3G.

I'm pretty much retired so don't really need email or news feeds while away from my residence computer. I'm not really sure just what I would use data connectivity for aside from something to stare at while riding the BTS. I don't need a widget to tell me it's hot and Red Sox scores only depress me.

I've seen specific i-phone call plans advertised but I assumed they were for the newer generation models.

What is the best service for a minimal user such as myself? Should I just keep the plan I have and turn on GRPS when I need it?

I kind of feel guilty having this great phone and not taking advantage of it.

  12. Lucky it wasn't worse. These unregulated uses of gas tanks in Thailand in commercial and residential locations is a ticking bomb. Most people would be like Tony the cook from Cambodia, and they would just run or be totally ignorant that a gas leak is a hazard. There is no regulated guidance on this at all.

Even in the heavily regulated west, gas explosions in homes and commercial spaces are not that uncommon from a variety of causes. The canisters used here do have inherent risks but so do the underground gas lines found in many western cities. Every year, there are blasts when gas lines are ruptured by construction equipment like backhoes digging up streets. Many deaths from CO1 also result from improperly vented gas household and water heaters.
