  1. I was quite surprised to see the A380 earmarked for medium haul flights, i.e. Singapore and Hong Kong.

I am no aviation expert so would like to hear opinions on the use of such an aircraft on this type of route.

Could it be to appeal to passengers in those cities to use Thai for long haul flights via BKK?

Not really a surprise as the BKK - HKG route is often filled up to the max. Most times that I flew this route, the biz section was full.

And, as mentioned before, it's valuable experience for the all the support crews when dealing with a new type of aircraft.

But, I have to wonder if the BKK airport offers 2 deck gangways (like in Singapore) or single gangways. 500+ passengers is a lot to off load. Also means longer immgration lines. As if they did not have enough problems already with that front.

  2. "He said the protesters who were killed were not terrorists and hoped that it would lead to the prosecution of people who ordered the killings and to justice."

"Somchai said those responsible for the more than 90 deaths in 2010 must be brought to justice."

One person comes to mind but he is too chicken to face up to it.

  3. I used to fly Air Can from Montreal to BKK at least 3 times per year for the past 4 years. Half of which on business class. Learned that the best deal for me was going from YUL to either HKG or NRT and using 30,000 aeroplan points for a biz class seat for the last leg. Treated myself to a 1st class seat on my last NRT-BKK on Thai Air for 50,000 points.

All told, never paid more then 1400$ for a flight from YUL to BKK. The Air Can biz class was all free upgrades (Narita has better odds for upgrades).

If you are Star Alliance gold member then baggage allowance is not really an issue as Air Can will allow you 3 bags for free.

I like Cathay biz class, nice seats and very good service. Air Can seats in Executive are good too and the food is edible enough. Both HKG and NRT have really great lounges with showers and good food, compared to the typical Maple Leaf lounges. Hot soup only?!?!

  4. Hi all,

Just got my 3 entry tourist visa (Thai consulate in Montreal, Canada) and I noticed that my visa 'valid until' date is Dec 19, 2012.

Now, I know that I can extend for 30 extra days for my first entry, then do a simple border run for another 60 + 30 days BUT this will put me at around the 'valid until' date.

My question is; if I step back into the country (using my 3rd entry) on the 18 of December, will I be allowed to stay for 60 days + or will they refuse my visa on the basis that it will expire on the next day? Hence giving me a simple 30 days (if by air) or 15 days (if by land) visa.

    Thanks.

  5. I am in Montreal now and I am getting ready to move to Bangkok on the 3rd of July. This story is on every ones lips in my office. Everbody keeps asking me what the deal is, as they seem to think that I am the Thai expert since I travel there 3 to 4 times a year.

This story has hit every news agency here in Montreal and people are waiting for answers. It completly baffles them to hear that a proper autopsy has not been carried out yet. Western logic vs. Thai logic. I know, I know - that's another debate.

There may not be that many Canadians travelling to Thailand every year (since airfare is rediculously expensive) but this story is going to make a few Canadian travellers, more specifically from Quebec, think twice about their trip to Thailand.

About the ibuprophen - I just don't get it. Why can I walk into any Canadian drug store and buy a bottle of 120 caplets without a prescription, off the shelves, but in Thailand, I have to do the whole song and dance just to get 10 tabs...

  6. I am in the same boat myself - I have Air Canada Elite status (gold alliance) for 2012.

For this year, I will keep enjoying our gold status but not for 2013 as I will not be flying as much. Be aware that aeroplan has changed its qualifying criteria for 2014. You need to accumulate over 50,000 status miles during 2013, in order to keep the gold status. Same deal with Royal Orchid plan.

If you know that you will be flying over 50,000 miles each year, you will be able to retain the gold status with Star Alliance with either Air Canada or Thai airways.
