  1. there are several articles on the internet where people talk about the cost of cremation in thailand.

curious about the subject, I read several articles where the costs of cremation ranged from 3k baht on up.

I think I would go to a temple to find out the exact cost.

    http://hjem.get2net.dk/civet-cat/theravada...gs/thai-94.html

    http://foia.state.gov/masterdocs/07fam/07m0220.pdf

    http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/archi...0dm999000c.html

    http://www.pattayamail.com/288/columns.htm

it is interesting to note that in the states, the basic cremation fee is about 200 dollars or 8k baht, but then, they jack up the cost with coffins, and the such.

    http://www.jaychapel.com/cat/General+Price+List.html

what a scam. I really don't see the need for all the fancy stuff when you die.

frankly, when I die, I would prefer a basic cremation done, and have my ashes scattered over the chao praya river. (if thailand would allow it, otherwise, over the golden gate bridge in san francisco. hehehe.)

well, hopefully I have at least another 20 years to go.

...doesn't seem like much time, does it?

...get those happy memories before it's too late people.

yeah. oiishi, here I come! then, it's the loooobby. ...and the pppparking lot.

    Aahhhhhhh. Ooohhhhhh.

tomorrow, it'll be the thai all-you-can-eat bbq buffet, and then, a walk in the park.

  2. hanging out somewhere for a long period of time doesn't mean you are crazy.

I've been hanging out at this lobby for over 3 years looking at people coming and going, and I feel ok.

in fact, there are over a dozen guys hanging out in the lobby all the time. we've been doing this for years. but I don't think we are crazy.

    are we??

I have enjoyed looking at pretty girls for over 30 years. does that mean I'm craZy??

    I wonder sometimes.

  3. you mentioned that you are 34 years old. ...is it safe to assume you want to "hangout"? if so, I suggest you just live in a hotel for a while to get a feel for where you want to "hangout".

I know a lot of folks who have retired here in bangkok. and most of them prefer to stay in hotels. like one gentlemen told me, the lobby is my living room, the dining room is the hotel restaurant, and all my "friends" are downstairs.

you can get a parttime maid to assist you with all the chores of buying groceries, and the such. at about 100 dollars a month, you shouldn't have any financial problem to hire one or 2 parttime maids to help you out.

if you go the route of a condo, be aware of the potential problems with "balconies".

some of the BTS and MTR stations have wheelchair and elevator access. I know the asoke BTS has it.

if I were you and you wanted to live in Bangkok, I would try to find a condo or hotel near the asoke BTS. centralized and close to the BTS and the MTR.

right off the bat, I remember seeing a low-rise condo behind the suda restaurant on sukhumvit soi 14. now that would be ideal. but I don't know how much it costs. check it out.

with the BTS and the MTR no more than 150 feet away, you would be able to get to much of the city quickly without dealing with the traffic. nitelife on both sides, restaurants galore, thai language school down the block, access to at least 9 shopping malls via the BTS and the MTR.

yes, this is where I would stay if I were you.

but then, I'm not you. so, you need to make your own choice.

    ..just my 2 cents.

    happy memories...

  4. thank you for the info. much appreciated. I  may stay for longer than the one month if I like it there. I am checking alot of different places online, and have found rooms with phone lines, just concerned about whether or not I can connect to the net from my laptop. I emailed one place last night and explained about the prepaid internet card, but she basically just pointed to an internet cafe. anyways, if anyone knows how these internet cards work, and which hotels they work at, any info would be appreciated. I just wanna be able to dialup from my room without all the bother of going to internet cafes. thanks again.

to do dialup internet, you ideally need a dedicated phone line. if you have this, then, with an internet card, you can access the internet.

internet cards come in a variety of timeframes, and vendors. a couple of the vendors that come to mind include ksc, and csloxinfo. you can surf the web to find the websites for these guys.

timeframes usually are denoted in the number of hours. I usually buy the unlimited which means that with that internet card, I can access the internet 24/7 for as many days that the card is valid.

what do you get with an internet card? ...basically, with the purchase of an internet card, you are provided with a username, a password, and a phone number that you dial to access the internet.

all you do is invoke your microsoft dialup wizard and key in the username, password, and dialup phone number. that's all there is to it.

an alternative to dialup and having to need a dedicated phone line is to go to places in town that have free wifi. www.cnet.com has a list for wifi places in bangkok. check it out.

..or you can read some of the other postings here on thaivisa for that info.

when I lived at the housebythepond way back when, I accessed the internet using their telephone system and a internet card. who knows what they have now. they may have wifi now.

as for admiral suites, I had many friends who stayed there. so, I know they are up and up about the internet. they may even have wifi now since adjacent to the place is a "coffee max" which is similiar to starbucks.

but you would have to check that out for yourself.

  5. Hi, I need a  room or apartment in Bangkok reasonably priced from September 10th for approx 1 month maybe more.

Only absolutely necessary requirement is that it must have internet access (telephone line is okay as long as it's possible for a dial-up connection). I read something about being able to buy a prepaid internet card for use with my laptop, if so, that is fine. Airconditioning and cable tv is also preferred. If you have an available room, or know of one with these requirements, please contact me with the details of the room and the price. my email address is [email protected]  I appreciate any info provided.

most of the really cheap places that are under 10k baht a month require a stay of at least 2 months. so, since you mentioned 1 month stay, I would suggest you get into a service apartment. of course, they are a little more expensive.

2 I know of that have what you want are...

    www.housebythepond.com

    www.admiralsuites.com

both are on sukhumvit soi 22. but they will run you about 15k to 30k a month depending on the size of the room you want. you will need to check to see if there are any vacancies. these 2 places are very popular.

  6. in siam discovery next to the cemina u will find a shop that has R/C toys but i cant remember if he had plain.u cant ask him though he might know
I went to this guys condo the other day, and I got to tell you.  he loves those r/c toys.  I saw at least 5 r/c airplanes of all types.  he also had at least 5 r/c all-terrain trucks.  talk about addicted to the stuff.  this guy definitely was into it.

anyway, when I asked him where you could buy this stuff, he didn't have any exact address but mentioned that most of the shops selling this stuff are in the bangna trat area.  ..whereever that is????

one other thing I noticed about his place.  ...he had all these thai magazines with articles on r/c toys, and there were many ads in the magazine selling these r/c toys.

....so, my suggestion to you is - if you want to know where to buy the r/c toys here in bangkok, get the thai magazine.  it's probably sold in all the thai bookstores.

    hope this info helps you.

i am looking also for R/C plains

but im looking for the big ones ,the onse that use fule

did that guy have those types?

he had everything. he even set up one of the rooms in his condo to serve as a workroom where he could take apart his planes to clean them up.

oh. incidentally, just got back from shopping at one of the tesco lotus stores, and saw those r/c toy magazines on the shelf for sale there. I'm sure those magazines are full of addresses of shops around bangkok that sell r/c toys.

helicopters, airplanes, cars, trucks, boats, etc. either fuel or electric.

hey. get this. there are some TV members who are into the r/c stuff big time. PM them.

  7. I have no experience with this myself but the whole concept of how a man would go about finding a mia noi just baffles me.  What would you do:

Man: Hi there, I am already married but think I need another woman to fulfill all my needs.  What do think, would you like to live as my minor wife, sort of stay in the shadows, keep it quiet and be unable to be proud of a loving, normal marriage?  Doesnt that sound great?

Woman:  Oh sure, I think that would be wondeful!

I just don't see how this could work without someone being disappointed in it all.  Surely not the man but someone.

By the way, my wife said as advice to any guys thinking about this, if you do it, make sure to hide all the scissors and knives away from your mia luang!  :o

when I first came to thailand, I used to go around asking girls whom I knew to be mia nois how they felt about being a mia noi, or a gig. just curious about it.

most of them in a sensitive manner told me that anybody who is willing to support them with their hard earned money deserves loyalty.

of course, you have your hardcore professionals who are totally cold.

but most of the mia nois I've met were regular girls who had financial problems.

to them, it was a matter of survival.

making ends meet here in thailand is not easy for many thai people. survival requires that they share resources. when you are only making 4k-6k baht a month, what other options do you have?

I remember once running around town with some rich thai guys. I saw this really pretty girl who worked at a car dealership. my thai friend saw the way I was looking at her. ..he asked me if I would like her as a "gig". I didn't know what a gig was at the time. so, I asked him what it was. he replied, a sidekick. someone who would reserve part of the day to be with you everyday at a price.

I replied in a startled manner quote, "you mean this stunner of a girl would consider being my live-in at a price???" he replied in a casual manner, yes.

curious as to the protocols... I asked him what it would cost, and how would you go about asking this drop dead gorgeous to be a sidekick. frankly, I was pretty sure that she would slap me in the face if I asked her - so , I didn't. but my thai friend just went up to her, and in a casual manner told her that I liked her and then asked her if she would consider being my "gig".

she looked at me with this straight face for about a minute, and said yes.

you can imagine my reaction to this whole scenario..

on one hand, I was in heaven and my heart was pumping a hundred miles an hour. ahhhhh. oooohhhhhh. ...in the other, I was thinking that my thai friend was playing a joke on me. get this, my paranoia got to me. so, I never did accept the offer.

but sometimes I wonder about that girl. still remember her face. ...so long ago. she was one of those girls that you wouldn't mind having a dozen kids with.

  8. I went to this guys condo the other day, and I got to tell you. he loves those r/c toys. I saw at least 5 r/c airplanes of all types. he also had at least 5 r/c all-terrain trucks. talk about addicted to the stuff. this guy definitely was into it.

  9. have you heard of zdnet or cnet? whenever I want to get product reviews or product comparison reports on various products including computer hardware such as printers, I refer to these websites for information.

    www.zdnet.com

    www.cnet.com

    www.zdnet.co.uk

there are a bunch of sites that provide product reviews. just google to get a list.

personally, I am shopping for a new printer too. am looking at a multifunction inkjet rather than a simple inkjet printer. multifunction inkjet is also scanner, copier, and printer. some are even fax.

my budget is about 8k baht. and I am down to 2 choices, epson cx6500, or hp 6210.

the cost of ink is important so I'm looking at that as a crucial decision maker. (looking at refill kits.) but things that I am concerned about are

    1) printer is network ready,

    2) autofeed scanner capability,

    3) can print on both sides without manually doing so.

    4) copier function without having to turn on computer.

everybody is different. so, you have to make your own choice based on your priorities.

you need to do your own research via the websites.

  10. I'm also currently looking for a ticket back to address some family concerns. my search has located several agencies offering prices in the 700 to 800 dollar range. look for the ads in the bangkok post, and the nation newspapers.

it seems the key to getting a good price is to get the ticket way in advance of when you are actually leaving.

on the other hand, if you want to leave in a week, you will probably pay through the nose.

  11. my 2 cents...

stereotyping at times can be considered a form of racism.

I usually try to stay away from people who engage too much in this activity because they don't have the mental capacity to see the error of their thinking.

I can just imagine all the pain and suffering they inflict on the individuals they meet in their daily encounters.

every now and then, I met thai girls here in thailand who don't believe that I'm an american. in their eyes, americans are all white. suffice to say, I usually don't bother to see them again after the first encounter.

since I don't enjoy s/m, I don't see the point of doing so.

it's like the guys who think all thai girls are just wh#res, ...where do these people come from????

sounds like it would be a perfect match. put the white guys who think all thai girls are all wh#res with the thai girls who think all thai guys are bad. they deserve each other.

  12. I don't know for sure.  but somebody told me that if you have a DTAC account, you can get access to the wi-fi at all the Starbucks for free.  this info is about 4 months old.  so, maybe it has changed.  doesn't hurt to check it out.

That promotion ended on/about 4 August 2005, unfortunately.

    Hi All,

Thanks for the info... I am jezchesters wife and have been looking at possible accommodation too. The Grand Hi-Tech Tower Resort looks good from their site and very reasonably priced. Does anyone have any first hand information about this place?

    Thanks!

    Laura

is that the place off soi ekkamai cross street petchaburi?

if so, I looked at that place once. has studio size rooms. one of the cheapest around at around 5k baht a month that has a swimming pool. the rooms that I saw had carpets. and I don't like carpets that are soiled. so, I decided not to stay there.

rca, and all the trendy places on thonglor are nearby.

transportation wise, you would have to take buses because the nearest BTS is about 8 blocks away. good thing is that the buses off the main street are frequent, and will take you to most locations in the city. traffic is a big thing to consider though.

bus #113, 60, 23, 72, 93 that go along that place will take you to many places in the city. there is also a BTS shuttle bus that goes up and down ekkamai.

I looked at this place about 5 years ago. so, it may have changed since then.

Thanks for your reply haha... As I don't know Bangkok very well yet I'm not exactly sure where it is. You can check their website at http://www.grandhitechtower.com/hitech2/home/?lang=en to see if we're on the same page.

    L x

just checked the website, and yes, it looks like it is the same place I looked at about 5 years ago. it looks like they remodeled a little. the pictures look good. but pictures can be misleading sometimes. I would look at the place first hand before taking the leap.

like I said, it is one of the cheapest apartments in the city that has a swimming pool.

but unless you want to spend most of your time in that area, you may find yourself on the bus for a long time coming and going. the traffic jams can drive you up the wall.

  13. one of my hobbies when I have the free time is to look at apartments.

one place that caught my eye is on sukhumvit soi 12.  the same street where condom and cabbages restaurant is located.  the closest bts station is asoke.

the place is called bangkapi mansion.  their 4 bedroom apartment is incredible.  it is about 380 square meters in size.  hard wood floors.  many built-in features like closets, shelving, and tables.  2 of the bedrooms are so big, you can close the entrance and have your own little apartment complete with your very own mini-living room.  the kitchen is big enough for 3 people to cook at the same time without getting in each others way.

and get this, the maids room has it's own sit-down toilet.  another thing neat about the maids room is that you can enter it from another door (other than the main door) from the outside.  if you include the built-in maids room, this place has 5 bedrooms.

on the upper floors, there are only 2 units per floor.

oh. and the view. you ask?   on one side, you see the queen sirikit lake, on the other, the asoke bts station.

    cost when I last checked - 50k to 60k baht a month.

I believe they also have a 2 bedroom unit in the same building that rents for about 30k baht a month.  but I didn't check that one out.

all along sukhumvit soi 12, they have nice apartments.  I remember a 3 bedroom apartment that was 250 square meters in size with hard wood floors that rented for about 28k baht a month.  name of the place was rama mansions.

another place was a 3 bedroom penthouse with 2 floors, and a veranda where you could entertain guests that rented for 40k baht a month.  can't remember the name of that place.  but it is on sukhumvit soi 12.

yes, it can be argued that for 50k to 60k a month, you could buy a place which is true.  to each their own.

Any tips on cheap area like 10-12000 a month, sukumvit or close to mrt/bts staion, or to buy one at upto 2 million minimum 1 bedroom?

    Thanks

part of the fun of living in bangkok is exploring. grab yourself a bottle of water, and look around.

  16. Hey thanks for that Birthday Subway Sanwich.....that was just great.  Now I'm back in California, and I miss all the BBQ's and other cusines of Thailand.  Take care....ha ha ha ha ha :o
talk about thai bbq's...  I was just at that place that the totster talked about 2 days ago.

went with a friend.  spent at least 2 hours eating.  had a great time.

ate at least 5 trays of food.  left the place feeling like a pig.  and happy as ######.

besides all the marinated meats, they had watermelon for fruit.  I had a plate of pad kapow gai, some egg rolls, teriyaki chicken, a bunch of vegetables. liked their version of spam too.  if you like, you can get shrimp too. but it costs extra.

eating at all-you-eat places for about 2 dollars, and watching first run movies for 2 dollars.

    ahhh.  what a life.

hey. when you get back again, let's do the bbq buffet. hope your trip back was ok. I feel like doing an oiishi run too.

  17. kao mun gai is one of my favorites along with padkapow gai. for cheap, I go to the 2nd floor food court at the pratunam wholesale mall where I can get it for 15 baht. comes with the dish plus a bowl of chicken soup. if you have a cup, water is free there.

  18. reminds me of a beautiful taiwanese girl I met in college back in the 70's. she was so beautiful, words couldn't describe how she looked.

oh. her shape was incredible. she had this shiny black hair that flowed all the way down her back to the tip of her perfect butt. her big eyes had this vibrate look to them. and to top it off, her skin was blemish free. ahhhhh. ooohhhhh.

my teeth chattered whenever I saw her. ..like in that movie with jodie foster and anthony hopkins - silence of the lambs. ...fe fe fe fe.

for some reason, one day I went up to her and asked her if she would marry me. she looked at me right in the eye, and said quote, "if you buy me a house in ######, I will marry you." ..back then, the houses in that area cost around 300k dollars. it would probably be worth easily over a mil now. (this is in the san francisco area.)

....I wonder what ever happened to her?

  19. my 2 cents...

from reading the newspapers, I have heard that there is a common source of water that several countries here in southeast asia all rely on. I think it was the mekong, but not sure. someone can correct me if they wish.

well, as we all know, china is growing incredibly fast. to the point where their use of oil has increased dramatically. and we all know what is happening to the cost of oil because of this.

...my guess, and this is just a guess on my part, is that their need for water will also increase too in the future.

if they will need more water in the future, does that mean they will take more from the river that all these southeastern asian nations all rely on?

if this is the case, what are the smaller nations along the river suppose to do about this?

the river starts in china. so if they want to create dams and reservoirs to stockpile the water, do they have the right to do so? more importantly, if they do, where are the smaller nations to get their water from then?

I don't know if desalination plants are the way to go. for all I know, maybe the other posters are right - that there is plenty of water to go around, and it only needs to be managed right.

the people who should be really up on all this is the farmers, and the government who is responsible for the people.

if it takes years to build a large desalination plant, somebody had better be talking about it or else we will all be in deep dodo for sure.

would it be better to build more dams and reservoir to stockpile the water that is already here, or to build desalination plants? this seems to be the big question.

which is more expensive? a dam/reservoir or a desalination plant? which takes more space? which is more flexible in location? so many questions. I'm glad I'm not doing all the thinking.

  20. you want to know the truth? ok, in my previous life, my wife of 7 years ran off with another guy. she broke my heart to the point where I was ready to commit suicide.

while contemplating how to do it, I came across an article in a local magazine that advertised you could meet your soulmate in thailand. I thought about it, and decided to come over for a "vacation" before shutting out the lights.

during that first trip, I had so much fun that I decided to cancel my plans to leave this planet.

in the early days of living here, I used to "date" a lot. but that got old quick. nowadays, I'm just happy to be alive, and living a life that doesn't require a lot of money.

...and best of all, I don't work.

am I bitter about my ex-wife? no, after a few hundred relationships here in thailand, I've learned that this is just life. and I am very lucky to have learned that.

frankly, I still love my ex-wife. we've had some happy memories together. I wish her all the best. ...but you have got to move on.
