    Where/What is the W District?

A very hip and cool "up market" place to eat and drink. Very popular with the Thai "in" crowd and very few tourists find this place. I recon there's around 30 different eateries; local Thai, proper pizza made by an American, a French eatery run by a French dude, a Jamaican joint and everything in between. My personal favourite is the steak place serving 200 g of PROPERLY prepared meat for 250 b as a steak burger with fries. Located here https://maps.app.goo.gl/E561dSRTh9V3aDws6

I realize this is not part of the discussion but as an after-hours teacher, I have found that at least my students and their parents are not that worried about the coronation.  I asked if they were coming to class on Saturday and Sunday and all have said yes.

As to booze, I am sure that they would have announced it already.  To me, the main areas they are talking about are any areas that are near the palace or any of the festivities.  Let's face with the last thing you need is a bunch of drunk Farang or Thai running around during the parade.

Also, remember that most if not all the activities are during the day so they will not affect the night scene at all.  Khaosan may be the hardest hit by rules due to its location.

Thanks for the input! Was hoping bringing my mate to the W District and some sky bars in that area. As it's his first time in BKK and only here for the weekend, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your scenario.

There may a call for "entertainment" to be subdued over the period, but I very much doubt alcohol will be banned. Some bars may close to allow staff to watch the ceremonies, but I have a feeling that many will be happy to work!

Many thanks! Have been in contact with some local restaurants and they say the same... So fingers crossed it stays that way.

  4. Hi all,

Have tried scouting the forum and web without success so I'll try my luck here.

Have a buddy arriving for the weekend (good planning, I know haha) and was hoping taking him to some favourite watering holes of mine eg. W District, some of the sky bars etc.

Does anyone have a clue if there will be any restrictions on the sale of alcohol in general during the coronation process? And if so, from when to when?

    TIA

Definitely turn off on to Highway 344 at Chonburi, if I were you, then proceed to Klaeng from where you take Highway 3 westbound. You'll definitely run a higher risk of encountering heavy traffic if you stay on the motorway past the Highway 344 turn-off, and you would be strongly advised to give Highway 36 a wide berth in any case in view of extensive roadworks currently taking place to the north of Rayong, including a contra-flow.

Great! Exactly the type of on point information I was looking for. Many thanks!!! Will give an update when I have driven the route.

  6. Hi all,

Hoping to get some advice from you lot as I live in Hua Hin but have rented a condo at The Marriott Rayong during a week from Songkran. We'll be driving from Bkk, so my "simple" quiestion is having the specific day in mind: do I turn of at Chon Buri on to the 344 road (as google maps indivetes) or do I keep on the nr 7, then onto nr 36 and then on nr 3? I'm worried the last of the two options might find me in heavy congestion passing Rayong... or?

    TIA

  7. Hi all,

Checked the pinned post with the templates but could not find the one for SETV from the Thai Embassy in Hanoi. And on their webpage most of the links are in vietnamese so hard to navigate and find the correct application form. Anyone avaliable sharing the correct link or a pdf of the correct document would be highly appreciated. Also, the 40 USD application cost, is that to be payed in USD or in THB?

    Many thanks in advance ????

  8. Hi all,

Went to the gaming arcade in Hua Hin where we live and was greatly disappointed when the gaming attendant by the VR section said; Solly, not download this game...

Heading up to BKK for a long weekend and was hoping any of you permanent BKK residents know where to play it?

Never heard of it?!? Same as for me when my 10 yo came and said he wanted to play it LOL. Write Beat Saber on YouTube and prepare to be amazed!

    TIA

  9. Hi all,

As the topic reads, where in BKK can I find a a jar of Sambal Oelek? I know for a fact that they usually stock it at the EmQuartier but currently they are out of stock. So no guesses please as I hope spending as little time as possible getting it.

    Thanks in advance

About 300-340 baht in a normal size taxi, depending on traffic, route, etc (50 baht airport surcharge and tolls are in addition).

I'm not sure if the meters on large public taxis charge a slightly higher rate or not. Perhaps someone else could clarify that?

Yeah, not sure if the larger ones are more per km... BTW, how are the ques theese days? At one point I remember they where regurlarly massive.

Just go to the departure level 4 and walk out to where the taxis drop off leaving passengers. They're all looking for custom to take back to town.

    No line, eezy peezy.

The "risk" one takes here as we require a larger sized taxi is that there is not one around and may be a wait of 20-40 minutes. But great tip though mate, will do this one for sure when arriving for sure next time!

Or you could use the public taxi service. The ticket machines are divided by short journeys, regular sized taxis and large taxis, with one set of machines just for large taxis which will meet your requirements.

Prices are metered, plus the 50 baht airport surcharge and plus tolls.

Yeah, might be an option. Just hate it when the ques are 30+ minutes when travelling with young kids. That's why I prefer the private driver. Arriving around 8 PM so just want to be out of there! BTW, what does the meter usually stop at these days when going downtown?

  13. Hi all,

Usually use the same driver (with big car) when arriving Swampy and heading into town but have lost his card. Does anyone have a good contact to share that can fit 3 people, 2 regular luggage and 3 carry on. I usually pay 500 (including toll) when going to Soi 22 so was thinking in that range.

    Thanks in advance

  14. If you're looking for an amazing getaway, with a perfect beach and supreme bungalow style beach front living (only 5 bungalows in total so very quiet and tranquil) at amazing value check out Mumsa Beach resort in Huay Yang! The reviews don't lie and I presume they plan something special for the NY celebrations. All just within a 2 h drive from HH (I rougly do it in 90 minutes). Don't miss out on beautiful Ao Manao for a quick breather either on the way there or on the way back as it's definetly worth a stop!
