  1. don't know why everyone says labs are so loveydovey, i have two labs and they are next to one of my german shepherds the most furious guard dogs and behave really scary when someone is approaching or outside. the female is only 8 months now but knows her job... the male is older and also i would not want to see him with children dragging him around...

goldens and huskies don't even bother to look if someone comes.

a good bet would be a bunch of thai dogs, most of them are very good guard dogs but also good with children. smaller dogs like poodles would be also suitable but don't really scare away intruders. dalmatians very lovely and not aggressive but make a hel_l of noise if anything is going on 'outside'...

  2. right so, raw bones (preferrably beef) will keep your dogs teeth white and shiny, your dog happy and busy and if you add some raw meat as well the fur will shine too :)

if despite raw bones etc the dog still has bad breath and develops lots of tartar then there might be a health problem, like kidney. then get a blood test done. one of my dogs got suddenly very bad breath and i found a rotting chicken bone stuck and a bit grown in in his palate.

  3. haven't heard of cesar millan, only on this board now, as i live without tv for the last 10 yrs. but will watch out for his book(s?) if i can grab one somewhere.

as many behaviorist's publications are very interesting reads, imo what really makes a good trainer is to find the right way and training/support/corrections of the specific dog in question. to be able to read it and its owner/surroundings right and find the suitable individual method which will be successful with this particular dog. this can vary a lot from dog to dog.

  4. i'm very sorry that it seems your golden has cancer. did you get a second opinion/examination. what did the biopsy reveal?

there are many ways to treat this disease, some quite promising. a friend of mine has an 8 yr old dog which has been diagnosed with liver cancer (and other) and is doing much better now after she feeds certain things and is doing a therapy (forgot what it was but can ask) and is far from dying now!

it really seems that goldens and labs are quite hard struck with diseases :) you read a lot about cancer and other diseases in these breeds. might be because they are so popular and many around or from overbreeding. friends of mine had a seemingly perfect healthy lab and age 3 he suddenly got diarrhea which could not be treated and then it was found he got intestinal cancer and died within weeks :D they also suspect chemicals in surroundings and other things as they grieve and won't accept such disease in their still young and otherwise fit and spoiled dog :D but who knows.

i hope you find a treatment which can prolong your dogs life in relatively good quality, chance is it is quite possible. good luck and all the best!

  5. if a dog vomits several times i go by the rule stop food for at least one day, make sure the dog drinks a lot as usual. if throws up the water too put immediately on iv to prevent dehydration. check on parasites like giardiae, intestinal worms. special antibiotic injections at the vet. if liver damage, what kind of food was given in the past? any take in of chemicals, poisons?

how is the stool? any? diarrhea, mucous?

hope the ultrasound reveals the cause, hope your dog gets better soon.

  6. maybe a reaction to a frog. it shows he has been digging, so maybe dug up a frog. quite common to get reactions from frog'liquids'. did you see any frog lying around?

if it was snake or centipede the swelling wont dissapear in days and is severe. also with snakes he would salivate and appear really ill quickly.

bee sting rather not but possible. also maybe some kind of lightly poisonous caterpillar.

    thankfully it vanished quickly!

  7. hehe, that's why i put the dustbin on a shelf long ago... :D

dan, thank you for caring so well for tintin and the effort and love you spare to provide him a safe and happy life!! :)

to make him calmer and smooth his trouble with other dogs and females in heat around neighbourhood please have him castrated. it is not a big deal and he will be up and fit in a few hours again. cost about 1500 bt at the vets around chaweng, can highly recommend dr m at the animal clinic.

  8. hi, this sounds like the papilloma virus. the warts look like cauliflower and are usually around and insinde the mouth/lip.

it is spread from dog to dog, mostly young dogs will get them once and then never again, and is not dangerous, will go away in a few weeks by itself. don't try to remove them by yourself. these warts could only be dangerous if they grow inside the nose and block it, but that is rather rare.

  9. at least two vets here on samui will put an animal to sleep if there is really no way out anymore.

had to put my great dane put to sleep a few months ago after he was not able to get up anymore for days and most of his bodyfunctions gone apart from the brain :) the vet kindly sold me a big enough dose of some narcotic which i injected him myself and then he finally could sleep deeply after these days of restlessness and fear. about 3 hrs later he passed away peacefully... the vet had been treating him for many years and knows me and dog well, that's why she gave me the med.

another dog (puppy) i had to bring to the vet to be put to sleep as it had seizures from distemper after a week of severe illness and no getting better was possible anymore :D

i think if you talk with your vet about this issue then you will know what he would do in such case.

  10. thanks, that is a bit calming...

the airline also included bottles to be empty, that's why i was thinking maybe someone will fill them during the flight or maybe they meant before and after.

could not see much difference while it is a bit cooler, she is always making loud snoring noise (even awake). but that is just her way to breathe and pant.

the actual flight is about 11-12 hours, she will be sent to phuket first and there is some time at the airport where she would be able to get out of the box and have some water and treat before the long flight. i guess if the box is large enough and the temp is cool as you said, should not be much of a problem hmm but at least 12 hours without water...

  11. what a cutie, he will be a very handsome dog :)

just take it slow, see how much he can take not getting scared and then stop and try again later. he will soon lose his fear and understand from you only nice things are coming. if he has still pain from his accident, the vet checked with ultrasound that no organs are damaged? this unfortunately can happen and the dog will only show severe symptoms after some time... don't want to scare you but just a note.
