  1. There is a G-8. I dont know if there is a G-7 (but I could be wrong. Usually am) The G-8 includes all of the above countries plus Russia. I wonder why Thai officials left of the Russians??

Russia and the US already have agreements with Thailand.

Maybe more a new agreement with G6. G7 became G8 in 1998 when Russia joined.

Next step, maybe an agreement with the G20? Then the EU and Australia would be included too.

I believe all EFTA countries are part of the G20. Not sure if NZ is part of the G20 or TAFTA,

so sorry my NZ friends, you might need separate agreements :-)

Now, if it is part of a trade agreement then why do they relax the requirements for tourists but not

for businesses? Did I miss anything?

  2. Living in a pretty touristy area I would say:

90 % of the population here had no opinion not for, not against but no one hesitating to seek contact.
10 % of the population had an opinion but only nodded their heads, still didn't hesitate seeking contact.
(that was 40 years ago, population approximately 280 and used to be a kind of ethnical refuge island )

    Today I would say:
( Population approximately 60'000 during "No Season" to around 180'00 during "High Season )

75% of Thai's dislike Farangs but definitely do not hesitating to seek contact with them
( The ones you're part of the family until they sold you their land but then don't want you to have it )

of those I would say 5% dislike Farangs or Burmese and do not want contact with them unless necessary.
( although here that's rather the upper class who thinks like that )

25% of Thai's are neutral (live and let live. As long as the Farang dosn't bother us, we will not bother him.)

of those maybe 5 % accept a Farang-Kee-Nok as part of their families. Help you without asking for anything in return.
Are compassionate, can talk about ANYTHING, are fun, mostly non judgmental and don't say every two minutes
    "You farang, you don't understand"

For sure, they do have very different views of us, depending if we are a tourist farang, business farang, retired farang,
married with a local girl, married with a northern girl , married with a girl from Isaan, etc.

  3. Well maybe same principle as they use in the UK?

First, a law get's introduced in Scotland. Only Scot's moan and make noise :-(
Once that's settled, the law get's introduced in Northern Ireland. Only Irish moan and stamp their feet :-(
Once that's settled, the law get's introduced in Wales. Only Walsh moan, can hardly hear them :-(
Once that's settled, the law get's introduced in England. Only English moan, but they always moan ;-)
In the end, all of the UK has the same law and "equality" ;-)

    Voila :-)

So I assume very similar here in Thailand ;-)
First the prices where written in Thai.
Then we had prices written in Thai and higher prices in Arabic numerals.
Now it's mostly just Arabic numerals.
Here where I live, most Thais have to pay farang prices by now and sure, they don't like it either.
Although, Thai people might get a discount ;-)

The night boat still charges different prices. For Thai 350, Farang 450 and Burmese 550. No discount :-)

  4. why do so many westerners have problems learning oriental languages.

Also why do american blacks pronounce ASK as AXE replacing the S with X. Now that's a problem cos that will be racist.

Or let anyone not German speak the ch and sch.

It seems so easy for any German speaker but almost impossible for anyone else.

    Can you show an example?

Cheibe Chuchichaschtli esch mer uf the scheiche gfalle. ;-)

After all the years in Thailand, I still get 7 and 8 confused :-(

  5. Immigration stamps on passport pages are pretty random and they might only
look at where you've been in the past but If you have a stamp on your last page,
that might cause alarm. (Depends where. top, bottom, middle, right or left)

So how ever nice and polite one might be, that could trigger extra questions.

  6. @Chiang Mai

"a recipet", apparently, is what the OP didn't get!

Go on, "Didn't get a receipt". Maybe lost it? Maybe he didn't have a laptop at all? Who knows.

I'm sure everyone is aware not to pay a bill or leave anything in "deposit" without a receipt?

    No receipt, no refund.

Now don't get me wrong. Absolute nothing to complain about this thread. Nothing wrong making

people aware, that anything can be confiscated by any customs around the world from any nationality.

    Not just in Britain.

Now as for travelling with a laptop. I have only the basic android system installed, some security software

and a program called "Splashtop". All my data is left at home on my PC and backed up on a cloud. I

can access all my data from anywhere in the world from any PC or smartphone.

My Tablet and my PC at home are both secured with a finger print password and mostly left on standby.

(So I can delete any data remotely with a push on the button of my mobile phone). If ever I lose or anyone

steals my android (or my PC at home), I can trace where it is, delete data or even render my Comp's useless.

All I need is access to a phone.

Now as some posters rightly mentioned, forensics will not start up your laptop but take it to bits and retrieve

data that way.If they would try and not enter my password within a specified time, all data on my Android

would be deleted and wiped over 7 times as recommended by NSA. As android OS is very small that takes

less than 2 seconds) Now as there is absolute no personal data on my Android, there is no real worries that

anyone, legally or not, could access any of my files.

Different rules apply for stuff you posted on line on public forums, walls or even websites. They have copies

of anything we posted in the past. including edits and deleted stuff. Even old, long deleted websites can be

found. Very likely someone on the WWW has still a copy of it. Try Internet Archives.

Now for profiling people. Just the criteria has changed. Long time ago it was long hair. So instead of insisting

on my look, it was easy to pull my hair up and hide it under a cap. Was just to make it easy on myself crossing

borders. Today, wearing a penguin dress and a business case instead of a rucksack might facilitate crossing

any border more than fisherman trousers, a hat and feather earrings (just an example).

  7. I always thought UK customs where one of the friendliest ones in the world.
No where else I travelled in the world customs would great you with a smile
and "Good morning, Sir. How was your trip" - "Where do you come from"
(off course they know that already) and "What's the purpose of your visit. "
How long do you intend to stay" stamp in passport and "Have a nice day, Sir"

Everywhere else it's usually just a stern look at you, look at passport, look
at you. Then the usual where do you come from, what's the purpose of
your visit, how long do you intend to stay.

Now sometimes a few years back, there was a directive for border personnel

"Not to smile to customers" and "look more severe" So the smiles disappeared

but it's still "Good morning Sir" and "Have a nice day, Sir"

I never have been pulled over when I walked through the green channel but
as somebody mentioned earlier, appearance and attitude will ultimately
decide how you are treated. Of course, if the customs officer just won the
lottery, he might be more lenient and if he had a bad night, he might not.
Now if that's right or wrong, who cares, that's just the way it is. If we like it

    or not.

Now I'm sure if on a simple question of why did you go to ......... , the answer
would be along the line of, hmmm...., well...., let's say: " My mate Gary Glitter
recommended it. But he said to keep it quiet or else all the UK customs officers
will be nipping over there to escape from the man-women they have to work with."
then I'm pretty sure, the shit would hit the fan.

So, could it be you bought it on by yourself? No one else's fault but your own?
    Attitude combined with appearance?

Maybe "Beware of bad attitude when returning To UK" would be a better title?

    Just a thought.

  8. if you leave the uk.perminant you are required to return your nhs.medical card with your name and ni.no on it so they can remove you from the system.if you dont you will be still registered.

What Medical Card !! Never seen or had one in my life and that certainly goes for all my kids ?

I don't know about Medical Card. Do you mean NI Card?

I got one, my son got one although I never had to show it to my GP or any Hospital I have been referred too.

Maybe if one just walks in to a hospital, they might ask for your NI number. I have been lucky so far that I didn't

    have too, so don't know.

Don't know if they still issue NI Cards today.

  9. > "He doesn't have a driver's license which he wants to apply" <

Considering how many people I know driving without any licence of any type,
how high are the chances of someone applying and paying for several licences
of the same category? For what? facepalm.gif

  11. I travelled half the world and yaeh, some times poor, some times rich too.
No where to go really, no where to settle for long. (I think it's called Itchy Feet)
Off course there are down and up's. I never learn much from my good times
but learned a life full of lessons from my bad times. Some bad things that happen
might even prevent us from worse. Maybe some thing like "Bad-Good Luck". ?

So, when ever I am the point of asking myself: "What am I going to do?"
and believe me, there are many of them, I say to myself,
"Don't worry and be happy, it always could be worse and tomorrow, well,
in due time, things will look better for sure"

Monkeys occasionally fall from the trees, then they stand up, shake
themselves for a while feeling sorry for themselves but then, climb up
    the next tree.

Good Luck on your "journey" thumbsup.gif
