Most definitely. if you want a better analogy, if I stop eating sweets I quit looking in confectionery shop windows.

Are you suggesting that the death toll from the virus would have been substantially lower had the quarantine process been in place (or flights banned)? Donald Trump did this in the US and look at their death toll.
You mean as in USA 244 deaths per million population versus UK 469 ?
Thailand was particularly successful at airport screening (after the first batch escaped and the army put in control).

I would suggest that Europeans post a greater risk.
The last batch of of 6,000 tourists from Wuhan didn't do much damage to Thailand.

I can shuttle back and forth between my condo in Chiang Rai and my GF's village.
I would like to go down to Chiang Mai to catch up with friends and buy some stuff I can't find in CR, but I don't want to get caught up in any quarantine or Immigration BS. On hold until the situation is clearer.
Similarly, I have done 3 trips between Chonburi and Buriram.
No issues. At the army controlled border point, coming into Buriram, they took my details (passport, phone number, address, photo of me with the car). My Buriram Healthy sticker remains untouched in my passport.

It is not in the beer section and it can be sold at all times - there is no confusion, it is 0% alcohol. A poorly run 7-11 may put the cans in the shuttered beer fridge but most don't (Makro staff wet themselves when you push your trolley towards them at 4pm with a case of Heineken in it).
Depends where you are because you may struggle to find it in rural locations.

How do you find Benidorm, out of interest. I've never been, but seems to be a bit like Europe's Pattaya, ie many look down their noses at it, and say it isn't even Spain? I love Spain.
Benidorm has something for everyone - in that regard it is a bit like Pattaya (except for the entertainment industry).
Kiss me quick hats, British style pubs, promenade full of mobility scooters with UK benefit claimants.................. plus a delightful old town with exceptional tapas restaurants and bars.

Yes, exactly that. I have no intention to leave Thailand as I work here. Buying a ticket to Malaysia would be just to get the ETD as a means to an end, in order to circumnavigate the situation. Ideally, the BE should be attempting to speak with Thai authorities, applying for an extension on passports until all offices are fully up and running, sadly this is not the case.
As for going back to the UK which has been mentioned in another post, this is not an ideal scenario either as I work here in Thailand. It is not practical to tell my boss I am going back to the UK....... Oh and by the way, I don't know when I will be back. Could be a month minimum, could be five. Let's take every day as it comes. The British Embassy have been very vocal on Coronavirus - but strangely quiet on passports.
They are obviously aware than an increasing number of British expats will have issues with upcoming extensions.
HMPO are as much use as a chocolate fireguard in responding to emails about the issue.... they simply come back with a stock answer that does not deal with the question.
HMPO should immediately 'automatically' extend 2020 passport dates by 3 months and also consider sending current passport renewals direct to the applicant via DHL. Unusual circumstances call for lateral thinking and I don't see any evidence of that from HMPO or BE - who should be pushing HMPO along the above lines. If I am doing them a disservice, and they are actually doing something, then they should announce the fact.

Agree 100%
Not got to the depressed stage yet but I fully understand the growing frustration.
Today, we should have been flying to Spain for a month. With the temperatures around here touching 40c your words resonate with me.
For many reasons I am happy to be here, but it doesn't prevent me having the same thoughts as you.

What a balls up. Three months too late. Never mind herd immunity, what about the infectious stampede that's been allowed to go on from all the unchecked UK arrivals as these Covid carabaos ranged freely across the country all through this?
Not only late to the game, they are still 3 weeks away from implementing it.
We were surprised when we came back from Sri Lanka on 14 March (to temperature scanning and form filling on the plane and at Swampy) that my daughter went back to Heathrow to absolutely nothing - and nothing has changed since,

Well that is a good result then... a few less Russians.
You don't think it might discourage fellow countrymen from breaking the law ? Discouraging other law breakers from visiting is not a bad thing.

DHL fly their own cargo planes into Bangkok. Their import and export of goods has continued uninterrupted throughout the current situation, and I would imagine it will continue to do so.
Thanks for clarifying that.
Logistically, it makes sense to retain the passports (if processed) in the UK until VfS does re-open. Personally, I would prefer my passport to remain with HMPO rather than a DHL storage facility in Bangkok.

I wonder how many motorcyclists riding without a helmet passed the Police officers while they arrested this couple.
Isn't it supposed to be illegal for passengers to travel in the back of a pickup? (but often ignored).
Ok, so the foreigners are breaking a regulation, quite probably along with a multitude of Thai folk congregating along beach road (as many other threads have shown). However, surely the BiB can simply send them on their way rather than carrying on as these visitors have just committed bank robbery.
The disproportionate response highlights the lack of balance and forethought going on at this time, especially when we see the 'food bank' lines etc where people are congregating.
At a time like this the Police need be out, Policing in more of a supportive and guiding role rather than taking these draconian and somewhat targeted (at foreigners) response.
Once again you appear to be picking and choosing which pieces of law you support. Not your choice.
Pathetic if you are condoning this law breaking which is designed (rightly or wrongly - not YOUR choice) to protect others. These people were warned and continued to offend. Yes, I would take the same view to helmets.... it is the law.

But closing a beach, and ban people from swimming makes no sense to me.
Oh, and pestering the last 10 tourists left in Thailand make even less sense.
I am not a fan of the rule either, it would make more sense to segregate and then control gatherings..... more time-consuming but a better step towards restoring normality. BUT, there is only one side at fault in this situation

Where will the passports be?
Kept in the UK until reopening or sent to BKK ?
With no scheduled flights coming in one would suspect UK - until DHL can start couriering again.

I am sure this has been covered before but I can't find it on a search....
Expat aged 74 took his pension in 2012.
He is now considering going back to stay with family in the UK. His pension will increase by approx. GBP 100 p.m.
If after, say, 6 months (or more) he decides he wants to return permanently to Thailand, does he retain the GBP 100 pm increase ?

As testing becomes more available so do the confirmed cases. A more accurate metric would be to look at hospitalizations due to the virus. Most cases will not need hospitalization.
Russia is a classic case.
Rather than being "scary" as a previous poster said they simply reflect increased testing.... almost 5m tests, 187,000+ cases with almost 11,000 confirmed yesterday. BUT, only 1.723 deaths with a death rate of 12 per million of the population.

Overseas withdaw money from Thai bank

Absolutely. It is arguably no different to what Transferwise do.
Many of us here have Sterling income and a need for Baht. The OP is in the reverse situation and just needs to find that 'trusted friend' to match the funds with.
Trying to formalise an arrangement with the Thai bank will be nigh on impossible and, at the very best, you would incur hefty fees having a lawyer act as an intermediary in any private arrangement. In the absence of any tangible offers take a chance on 10,500 Baht...................... send that to my Thai account and I will immediately transfer GBP 250 to your UK account. You can never be at risk for more than one payment......
