  1. I'm 50 & as far as I can see I can't get insurance for the big things at all, ie. over 200000 bhts of problems without having to get a policy that includes all the small things & then they hit you for 5500 bhts a month at least, which is outrageous, dunno what the solution to this is, but as a reasonably healthy 50 year old without a lot of financial backing I can't afford to get insured... If anyone knows of a sensible policy that would cover me only for the big risks I'd be delighted to see it....

  2. Well that is fine and now they are (or say they are) going to control the sale and use of alcohol by under aged juveniles then they can remove that stupid and totally irrelevant law that prohibits sale under 10 litres of alcohol to ANYONE between certain popular hours to shop like 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM or before 11:00 AM in the mornings. Really stupid and totally inconvenient to millions of ordinary adults in Thailand. Most Thais I know even agree that it is a totally stupid pointless law as there is already a strict law banning to the sale of alcohol to under aged folk and it is that law that needs and seems is to be more strictly enforced by the BiB.

Anyway that limited time for selling alcohol is only really applied byt Tesco Lotus and Big C even the other supermarkets ignore it quite rightly. Sure they should not and do not though ignore the law about selling to under aged buyers. Stupid and pointless prohibition laws applied to adults NEVER EVER work as folk will and do just ignore it as they always have and not only in Thailand either. Most countries on the world are now easing and stopping many prohibitions like for example the far more harmless Marijuana has been now fully legalised in a few USA states and this is just the sensible start, and since my youth the unwanted Sunday trading laws particularly on alcohol have been removed rightly giving freedom of choice to adults.

Main point of this post is for Thailand to look at and remove this silly, and pointless, time restrictions on the retail selling of alcohol law. Currently I shop a lot at Tesco Lotus and often conveniently in the mid afternoon and it means I then have to go to another shop to buy my beer for my fridge. Very inconvenient and time wasting and I usually cannot use my free to use UK based VISA credit card which I use for all my shopping, bills and petrol etc, to avoid using cash with the high cost of ATM fees, UK bank charges, or the cost of transferring money to a Thai bank. Yes I have looked into ti s closely and for me it is far cheaper and easier to use my UK credit card and pay it off monthly with one payment using internet banking from my UK bank account where my sterling pensions income goes.

Anyway that is my personal inconvenience but most others I speak to have also similar or other related and pointless inconveniences from this really stupid totally irrelevant alcohol sale time restriction law. If somebody can explain accurately and honestly and LOGICALLY what this law achieves then I will listen carefully but cannot think of any valid argument to have such a ridiculous law. Other good laws prevent the sale to under aged folk so that is no reason for having this law too which effects all of us normal adults. Why oh why cannot the Government apply some logic and see this point and remove this law ASAP and make the vast majority of folk a lot happier.

This law only applies to Falang owned Businesses, Tescos Big c 7-11 etc. it's just protectionism for Thai businesses, & I agree its f-----g annoying...

  3. QUOTE - There are several hundred thousand scavengers in Thailand earning about 200-300 baht ($6.5-10) a day

    Isn't 300 baht minimum wage?

That's what I thought. Then again, people begging on the streets make a sh*tload more money. I had a little conversation with this chic from UNHCR doing her routine fund thingy and she says street beggars earn an average of around a THOUSAND baht a day! That totally blew me away. It'd be nice to see published information on this but yeah -- she said these people were just too lazy to actually do anything else -- yet they rake in quite a sum.

Some Beggers in Bangkok or Chang Mai might make up to $1000 Baht a day But I can assure you that the limbless etc ones in Issen & the rest of Thailand make a fraction of that amount, They don't all live in the Tourist traps you know, Touristy Thailand is actually quite a small area in a very big Country.....
  4. the democrats need to reinvent themselves, I hate to say this but AV is not the man to lead an opposition to PTP or anyone for that matter, although I think he is a great man and a valued asset he simply doesn't have what it takes to be a leader.

A new party that shows honesty and integrety with a leader who is smart presentable good speaker and shows his intent clearly to all the people for the people and not through thuggery - to end corruption "enforce the law equally" for all and get this country back on it's feet fiscally and politically before it's too late.

I think the Thai people are just about sick of both the current PTP and their lies - corruption - thaksin - theft - thuggery and blatent disregard for law and the opposition bickering back with lame accusations nipping at the heels of PTP while they rape and pillage Thailand and it's people, what these people need is a new begining, a political party and leader that can garner trust and be trusted - could it happen ?

Its what needs to happen, but it cannot happen unfortunately. Its the way the system is, and the way the powers that be want it to stay.

Spot on I'm afraid, far too many vested interests want it to stay the same...
  5. What I've heard here in Issen is, that if you have a small Family Farm the Banks will give you a loan for that new Pick-Up that you have to have & take your Farm as a Guarantee, so in 5 - 10 years time you've lost your farm as your'e unabled to keep up with your payments, & your Pick-up has rusted away so you are left with no means of earning a living & no transport. The Banks & the rich who control them are happy to have your land & the poor become poorer & are easy targets for low wage slavery by the same rich... Sounds about right for Thailand I'm afraid...

  6. KRABI: -- It is possible to block from viewing in Thailand a YouTube video clip produced by the father of a Dutch girl who was reportedly raped in Krabi, permanent secretary of the Tourism and Sports Ministry Suwat Sitthilor said yesterday.

"The father was possibly furious due to a misunderstanding. He went on to say that the authorities would try to help the girl's father understand the situation in order to "rebuild the country's image"

Tourism Minister Chumphol Silapa-archa had said earlier that the incident could not be considered rape...

This story is clearly an attempt to deny the situation, while also the beginning of a smear campaign.

The father and family should be advised to bring strong legal action against this kind of dangerous claptrap, while the Dutch government should begin an equally robust action against the Thai government, and quickly.

  7. I feel very sad for the Girl & have huge respect for the Father in finding a way to hit the corrupt officials in the only way that will hurt, loss of money & face, this, hopefully will be one step in dragging this Country out of the dark age that it is stuck in as far as law & order & respect for other nationality's by the people with power here. Unfortunately there will always be ' Street Animals ' amongst the vast majority of decent Thai's, just as there are in every other Country on the planet...

If the vast majority of Thai were decent, then they would stand up and be counted when it comes to this sort of thing.

The problem with Thailand and the vast majority of Thais is that they don't give a dam_n until it affects their cash income - Third World Country with a Fifth Rate Police force and a seventh rate government!

If they had a set of balls they could rise up against this, but they won't rock the boat - it is only a Farang!

If they stand up to the powers that be 'Briandajew, Police etc. They know what will happen to them & their Family's, they've had hundreds of years of being trodden on & being powerless. It doesn't matter if it's Falangs or Thai's they stand up for the end result is the same for them. Grow up & stop being so Naive...

  9. Update, well I managed to get a extension & left the Country without a problem, but I won't be doing the same again as it's really not worth the worry about weather they notice or not, Better to go to Vientiane & stock up with some cheap wine, come back & not have to worry about the possible problems. BTW does anyone know how much wine you can bring back to Thailand from Laos or Cambodia?

  10. T

he PTP's cronies continue to push this country, inch by inch, closer to either dictatorship or another coup..

Which clearly shows just how much Thaksin, his family and their brown nosing acolytes along with the myopic farangs who openly support a crooked despotic methodological wanna be dictator love this country and its people.

If you don,t mind Siampolee and Ballpoint, I,d like to add a third which if this situation isn,t brought under control and curtailed there will be all out civil war mellow.png

The " myopic farang " probably have a long association with left wing parties like the UK,s BNP and other similar organisations that are to be found scattered around the Western world / globe.

Sadly they are all hell bent on getting results via intimidation and violence ect. ec. and are usually driven by extremist groups, who in turn are fired up by individuals intent on getting / forcing a certain desire / agenda upon those who live and abide by genuine democratic principles, and the laws of their country.

Self interest also comes into the equation in many left wing scenarios that are pre planned to achieve maximum results via intimidation ect. ect.

Not unlike the ongoing situation here in Thailand. Hmmmmmm

    marshbags whistling.gif

The BNP are the most far right wing party in the UK Marshbags, They are essentially Neo Nazi's & left wing is the last thing anyone who knows anything about UK politics would describe them as....

  11. Secondary issue.......what's this Facebook fund all about? Was this guy in Thailand without travel insurance?????

I'm not judging him as I can't deduce if he was or not, however anyone traveling to Thailand without insurance is a nutter.

houlI've been here for 7 months & I've yet to see any travel insurance that would insure you for any more than 90 days so what sort of crap are you talking....

  12. Just a update on my visa run, I got to Friendship Bridge at 7.30 AM this morning, there was hardly anyone there, got stamped out of Thailand, did'nt catch the bus over the bridge just walked across the road, filled in a Thai arrival form & got stamped straight back in for 60 days with no problems so did'nt need to go to Laos at all, very impressed, the whole thing took no more than 10 minutes before I was back on my motorbike to Non Khai...
