  1. Not all, but a significantly large number for people to notice it

If it was the minority, issue hardly be raised

Just like Indian visitors, very often get robbed of large sums of money while getting very cheap sexual services massage:lol:

how often is "very often"? huh.png

Publically reported, would appear to be weekly, but no doubt have much more than that

Or can also say, often enough to be noticed and spoken about

  2. So are these just unconfirmed rumors or is there actually someone that has seen an oil spill, or the aftermath of one?

Granted it's a few days since I was out there, but on the 5th (i.e. last week), the water out there were as pristine as it gets.

My guest was there a few days ago, he has seen it, was given special soap/oil to shower with to get the oil off.

I personally have not seen it and hence the post to verify if anyone else has heard or seen anything.

  3. The idea is to try and relate what you write to the post somehow. Why don't you give it another shot. Remember something I wrote in this thread is the general idea.

Or you could express agreement with PaullyW. He writes that Thais are lying pitifully boring, poorly educated folk with low morals and no interest in anything beyond the superficial. His people are modern and evolved and the Thais are ancient and simple.

I don't agree with that but maybe you do?

So you do not agree that Thai are lying, pitifully boring, poorly educated, low morals and no interested in anything beyond superficial?

May be you can explain the reasons for lawyers not knowing the law, or doctors not knowing much about medicine, or perhaps lack of inventions or total disregard for other cultures,

Perhaps a good reason for rampant corruption, heavy drinking, silliest soap opera's, poor work habits, laziness,

Reasons for racism and nationalism, reasons for students being at the bottom in almost everything (as per surveys)

Reasons for being totally ignorant in regards to the rest of the world, wars, the admiration of Hitler

Reasons for needing smart phone, while no money to feed the family, reasons for spending most of the working day either on the phone or with the phone.

Can not wait to hear the reasons, after all you are fluent in Thai, so you know and understand and hopefully can educate others

I tried the other day to show Farangs how to get involved with the Thai community and the thread was closed because it turned into a flame fest against me because I had said something Thai positive to say. I could take each question one by one and give you concrete examples like, "Thai students set highest record at Shell Eco-marathon Asia.

The Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2012 was held during 4-7 July 2012 at Kuala Lumpur’s Sepang International Circuit, and involved 119 student teams across Asia. 12 Thai teams from 9 educational institutes participated in the competition to build vehicles that travel the farthest distance using the least amount of energy.

Team Luk Jao Mae Khlong Prapa of Dhurakij Pundit University competing in the Prototype category using Ethanol E100 emerged with the best run at a mileage of 2,903 km/l, and surpassed the highest mileage of 2,388.8 km/l achieved at the Shell Eco-marathon Europe 2012. Thai students won four awards in Prototype category this year."

Although interesting I feel it would take us too far afield from the OP's topic which is Why can't foreigners in Thailand read and speak Thai. The answer to that is, I feel, laziness. I'm sure there are Farangs who are not lazy in Thailand but all the ones I know who aren't lazy speak Thai.

some top students winning (whatever) prize are not representative for a population of 65 milllion.

having said so... i don't agree that all Thais are lazy, drunkards, have low morals or spend most of their time using their smartphones wink.png

Not all, but a significantly large number for people to notice it

If it was the minority, issue hardly be raised

  4. Perfect choice. Suthep and the Democrats said that nobody trusts her anymore and nobody wants her to lead the country anymore. Let the Thai people speak (and then, Democrats, if you don't win for 23 years in a row, please shut up forever).

Here is a better thought, lets bring in UN observers, so no money changes hands and lets also forbid populist policy's and see how well she is likedthumbsup.gif

I have no doubt her motto for upcoming campaign would be, if you vote for us, we will pay you what we owe you for the rice, but if you do not, then you loose.

Gee i wonder which way Somachai's will vote who has been waiting to be paid for monthsrolleyes.gif

"Lets forbid populist policies"! I see your hero, ( lets abolish democracy) Suthep came up with this gem tonight. Saying that his new constitution will contain a clause tthat no government is allowed to launch populist policies. Hahaha, he really is a political pygmy. So no government can announce policies that will be popular!? Absolutely ridiculous, what is he suggesting, all candidates must promise to double taxation, raise food prices by 50%, etc etc. The man is a complete fool who is totally out of his depth.

No problem with UN observers, although i doubt Suthep would go along with it. Even he knows that in any election here his party would come a very poor second, thats why he wants to ban elections and take away peoples right to vote. He joins a long list of like minded dictators in that regard.

Anyway, for him and all his avid supporters on this forum, i would have thought that Ms Yingluck being picked as the No 1 candidate is the best news they could hear. After all she is wildly unpopular, a figure of fun, even hatred. This must be true because about 90% of the all knowing posters on these threads have been telling us this on an hourly basis for the past month or so. So it naturally follows that in an election nobody would vote for her or the party she represents, right?

Oh, hang on a minute ------!

cheesy.gif , its hilarious the amount of people throwing "democracy" around

For starters do you actually know or understand what it means?

Can you name any period of time when Thailand was governed democratically?

No doubt if you actually understand democracy, you will not be telling me now.

Now, you claim to know democracy, so you think offering ipads is democratic way and an honest policy? You have seen other government in other countries run on "free ipads for all the kids"?

  5.

I can't seem to find a website for sophon broadband if anyone has one that might show package prices etc?

Also can a farang pay monthly or do they want 6 months or 1 year up front payment?

Do not know about farangs, but i am a foreigner and pay by the month

    http://www.sophonbb.net/

Well if you are a foreigner then you are a farang,

Anyways thanks but I tried that site earlier and it's no good. It says click on your area (which the drop down menue doesn't have many) and even when I tried another area it didn't do anything. There is no "search" button etc.

Ehhh NO, and for a fluent Thai speaker, you should know the difference and if you do not....... farang is european or westerner. I am neither by choice, I am a foreigner., its called self respectthumbsup.gif

  6. -If you live here, get yourself house or a condo away from the touristy locations

-If you not married, find a job or a hobby or get a dog

-If you married, find a job or a hobby or get a dog

-Make your home like a home, do not live out of a suitcase, because then your life will be like a tourist pissing money away

-Do not start calling bar girls "friends"

-If you have been ripped off or bought something which does not work, by law you can change it, including cars and bikes, see this office http://aseanconsumer.org/misc/downloads/usftc-s1-mp.pdf , http://www.ocpb.go.th/ yes it is real and yes it does work. Just used them to exchange the bike which broke after 3 days of use.

  7. @lemoncake I'm not sure how it works, but if you want I can send you some links that works from a TOT connection and that don't from a 3BB connection. I have never ever seen the MICT warning from a TOT connection yet.

Right now i am on Sophon, so if you want to test it, either pm or post the sites and i will try to open it and let you know the outcome

    PM sent.

    Got it and replied :)

Foreign observers have been suggested before for an election but apparently somebody in the government of the time didn't want that........

    Yeah, funny thatwink.png

  9. As you are not sure who "us" is, I guess all at TV agree with you, except me biggrin.png .

There are top medical professionals, engineers etc who do not speak English - of course, obviously they are not from the English speaking countries.

Unless you have been voted in secret to be a spokesperson for Thaivisa, probably not wise to claim "US"

Please name those TOP medical professionals in Thailand.

Naturally i would be guessing as you seem to know who the top professionals are, but the ones i am aware of, all work in private international hospitals, with masters or phd's from English speaking countries.

  10. All interesting stuff but all off topic. I use Farang because I mean Farang not foreigner. Two different words two different meanings. Do you really think people should answer all of your questions even though they have nothing to do with the subject of the thread? Sorry not I. Start another thread. Good topics.

I see ,so when you can not answer any of it and proven to be incorrect, then it is off topic, but when you post off topic drivel, then its relevant.

You use farang, because you are a wanna be Thai, sadly you never will be. and no matter how many times people have shown that use of farang is only

widely spread in low, uneducated classes, some will insist on doing so, actually believing they are really cool.

  11. Ok perhaps you are a bit dim. Where did I say I wanted to master medical terminology? Your response to a reasoned reply that I didn't talk to my cardiologist (a man I know quite well) about food is without a doubt the most ridiculous and not thought out response on this thread. Go back and read and respond instead of trying to be cute. cheesy.gif Next please.

    ChiangMai Kelly, is that you?w00t.gif

Word of advise for your old timer, if your cardiologist does not speak fluent English, run, run as fast as you can.

If he could not learn a simple language over the years, i have serious doubts he learned anything about something as complex as heart.thumbsup.gif

"If he could not learn a simple language over the years, i have serious doubts he learned anything about something as complex as heart."

Do you really want us all to believe that ANYONE who does not know English, does not know about anything in this world?

Pray give us all your advice.

Not sure who "us" is, but you can believe whatever you likethumbsup.gif

Yes i am saying that if a doctor did not learn something as simple as English(mind you it is compulsory), it is very unlikely he learned anything about medicine, especially in case of a specialist such as cardiologist.

Not to mention a large number of medical terms are Latin, most certainly not Thai

  12. Hey Lemoncake,

I have ADSL from 3BB and it works great. Been using them for more than 6 years now. Better than anything TOT has. As for Sophon, I have friends that say it is good.

I run 2-3 computers from an ADSL wireless router that works very well.

Myabe for you ADSL is old, but for me it wokrs better than anything I have used in this country.

But you have not tried the cable yetwink.png

Imagine going from driving a toyota to driving a nice BMWbiggrin.png

  14. Thanks I'll ask the office tomorrow.

@lemoncake the reason I want TOT is that they don't seem to censor some websites... while on the other side 3BB displays a warning with a picture of the King instead of showing the actual website I intended to visit. Can you confirm that "Sophon Cable" doesn't apply censorship? If yes then it could be an option!

Sophon rents their lines from CAT, so whatever CAT censors is what you get.

So far, the only sites i have seen censored/blocked are porn sites and its done by MICT

Ok so it's a no-go for me. I can access all porn sites using TOT WiFi Hotspot. Can't do the same using the 3BB from a hotel where it shows the "MICT" warning you're mentioning. This also goes for some Wikipedia pages and some YouTube videos.

So TOT is my only option at the moment. wai2.gif

That does not really make sense. If its blocked by MICT, it would be blocked on all networks

  15. Thanks I'll ask the office tomorrow.

  16. TOT is unbelievably bad. They only have two internet repair technicians and one van to cover the whole of Pattaya/jomtien, and they have a backlog of hundreds of jobs. I know this because I spoke to the two guys myself. I can't recommend any other providers from personal experience but my wife is currently looking for an alternative provider for her business.

I'm currently using a Truemove SIM card, but even that's not very consistent.

I am happy to vouch for Sophon Cable Internet, Been with them for around 3-4 years and nothing but praise
