Been following this with interest.
30-40 Million THB missing, claimed taken by wife.
Wife claims he attacked her before.
Was valuable amulet dealer.
Went to high ranking police officer to seek protection. Or not. Maybe just a social call! Police officer was amulet dealer too.
Was drug user.
We will never, EVER find out the truth behind this one but I am keen to see what they spin the "truth" as....

Great old steam loco there! How often do they run it?

People often use 'Issan' synonymously with 'lower class'. There are plenty of upper class in Issan. And if you are earning 200k in Thailand, then in my book, you are upper class.
You don't change class in any hierarchical society. You are what you are, you're born into it and remain that class. If you're lower class and strike it rich then you're still lower class but rich and everyone else of any higher class will see that too.

Disgusted but not surprised.
Aren't the Tiger lot in Phuket still trying to get their case for their fire/deaths thrown out too?

Was at the Burmese Embassy visa section today and a lot of the Farang and other tourist there looked like down and outs. If you're going somewhere to apply for a visa to enter their country then surely you make an effort?!? Apparently not in a lot of cases. If I was on the visa desk i'd have turned them away for being tramps.

I was in a Gold shop in Yaowarat today and a Thai-Chinese guy was buying a HUGE twisted rope chain. It hung to his stomach when he was trying it on and was at least 10mm thick. 20Baht at least I'd guesstimate. He didn't look short of a few bob but wonder where or when he'd ever wear such a thing. It was certainly a custom piece so must be for a specific purpose.

Gold prices for 99% pure gold is worth the same price if it in a pure gold Thai necklace or in a Gold brick out of Ft. Knox,an incorrect assumption Kikoman. the purchase price for 24k gold jewelry is higher than a 24k gold bar and the selling price for that piece of jewelry is lower.
Let me put it this way your statement is more correct then mine, Thai gold is (96.5%) 23 K as a gold bar is 24 K so based on that information. your statement is more correct.
My statement to the poster was also correct, He stated that the only way one could buy gold as an investment is incorrect, in the context that I stated Thai's purchase gold for an investment. He is talking about purchasing bars of 24 K gold, as Carlos Slim or Bill Gates would do. Thai buy gold in one satang or one baht at a time and when they get more they update it to 2 satang and or 2 baht. Not any different that someone buying US saving bonds in the US,
My wife has gold that Thai women in the village wear on Buddhist holidays to the wat maybe 4 times a year, then it goes back in to the safe, until the next holiday. I would say it is worn for less than 24 hours in a year.
Cheers:
Naam and Kikoman, you may be both right from some perspective. Have no reasons not to believe you. But my personal limited to Australia experience is keeping me away from wasting money on jewelry.
Recently a good lady friend of mine was going to marry a bloke. They both selected a diamond ring for her and he paid $12,000. The things didn't work out. Wedding was cancelled and she returned the ring to him. So far nothing odd.
But before she returned him the ring she went to a couple of shops to check how much it would have been if she has sold it. One of the shops was the one they bought it from. Offers? - not over $4,500!!!
Before I came to Thailand, I bought a brand new Pulsar IQ for $26,000. Then change of plans and I am moving out to Thailand. The car was in mint condition, still under 10,000 km on odometer, still under warranty etc.
Sold for $18,000 privately. Not even the bloody Dealer I bought it from wold give me that! He offered $17,500.
This is why, if I wanted to invest free money lying around - it wouldn't be cars or jewelry. Than again, it depends on the level of operations. Buying a Merc, a BMW or a SAAB - isn't a good investment. Buying jewelry - isn't a good investment in my personal view, but buying shares of companies - might be! Problem is, though I am comfy, I am in no way a BIG fellow. The big guys seem to gain whatever they do... So, we have no disputes here... it's personal experiences that may be different.
Cheers. And thanks for your responses.
As to the question of wearing excessive jewelry - in my opinion it is bad taste stemming from bad education. Really RICH Thais wouldn't do it either. The ones who do - IMHO are vulgar people, both men and women...
Gold jewellery in Australia, USA, UK, all of the Western world is a rip off. It's all 9k or 18k and you're paying a huge markup for it. That's why your friends wedding ring was suddenly worth so much less - it was only worth the true value.
When you buy gold jewellery in Thailand you pay the current Baht rate for the weight of the gold and a little bit for the making of it. It's also 23k, 96.5% pure. When you sell it you get a very slightly less rate. E.g. todays buying rate is 19,300 and selling is 19,400. It's completely different to buying jewellery in the West and it's a good way for people to invest money.

Thank you for the info, Bert. I will certainly be at the embassy on the Sunday and may make it upto Kanchanaburi.

I wish the skytrain operated till around 2 am (at least on Friday and Saturday nights only). I don't think that is asking for too much.
I have seen these premature closing times all over the world. Not in every city, but many. It is totally mind boggling. You have MADD groups in the US, fighting this and that - why in the hell don't they put their efforts toward public transport operating after 2am?
As it's only single line running e/w I imagine they need to close between 00:00-06:00 for maintenance and repairs each day.

I was in one of the nicer private clinics earlier and in the waiting area was myself and Two well off looking Thai ladies together. They were both engrossed in their iPhone and iPad, not talking, hadn't looked up from their gadgets since I sat down. Playing on the big TV was some damn awful Lakorn show, no-one else there to watch it, was really grinding my gears. So i picked up the remote and started flicking through channels. That woke them up from their Apple induced coma in an instant. They both looked at each other, a look of disbelief on both faces, then looked at me, then the TV. They looked like I'd just drowned their puppy. I found CNN and left it on that, leaving the remote within their reach and giving them a final look. Go on then, pick it up and put it back. I knew they wouldn't and they didn't but the looks they exchanged kept me amused for the next 5 minutes before they were called to see the Consultant

Sorry, no pics to post myself but for those interested in the subject I can recommend a good free exhibition at the Bangkok Arts And Cultural Centre with them currently having a Street Photography show on. Some interesting, funny and thoughtful shots including a pretty contemporary looking set from 1958.
The Centre also has some other good galleries and is prob the best example of the Thai's copying a big Western idea (contemporary art centre) I've seen for a while. The actual building itself is very good too, it's form and function combine in a very satisfactory manner. Location wise it's right opposite MBK so easy to get to and completely free.

Got directed here from another post that was opened today and closed by admin.
It was open to climb up as high as you can go today. Took some friends who enjoyed the visit very much. Two of the smaller stupas behind the main one have some scaff on currently.
As of today it is still very much worth going if you're on the tourist trail.
Edit - And it was indeed 50B for the entry and 3B for the ferry e/w..

What you say is "almost" true ... but not totally. It took me many years to find them, but I know of two tailor shops ... both within two sois off of Sukhumvit ... that produce superb suits, coats, pants and shirts. They're both very expensive ... for Thailand ... but the quality is as good as any in England/Europe.I guess I should say something simply because I am likely to belong to the top 1% on TV in terms of being an absolute clothes freak.
There is not a tailor in Bangkok who can deliver the same kind of quality and material that you'll get if you spend 40k baht on a normal factory collection Italian suit in one of the shopping malls. The problem for a certain percentage of the male population is that standard sizes aren't even close to fit.
But trust me when I say this; you can't buy a cashmere wool suit for less than 30k since the material itself is 30k.
You WILL NOT get the same quality as ordinary Canali, Zegna, Armani or similar if you buy a tailored suit in Bangkok. Period. Proper tailors in London are different, but then you're looking at a completely different price...
Please share details of these great tailors...

The OP might prefer a club like Glow (Suk Soi 23) where people go more for the music and to dance, a "proper" dance club much more like what you might find on the more underground scene in the UK or US.

Thanks Sheryl, will look into those.
Any other recommendations welcome also!

Hey, I know that a consultation is needed first of course but from my own research I think I would like to try PDL laser treatment to try to fix some broken capillaries around my nose and what I think is also a touch of Rosacea. The V-Beam laser seems to get very good reports for this.
Any recommendations for this type of treatment in Bangkok? Would like to be able to talk to a practitioner who can assess my skin well and who uses this type of treatment and has a history of good results and good reviews from customers if possible.
Thanks.

Perfect, just perfect.

So it's getting busier.....no mention of extra trains or carriages though which would be the sensible thing to do. no?

Think Downtown Abbey is awful, can't imagine how it got so popular. It's certainly not through historical accuracy!
Last episode of Dexter was indeed terrible. Big big letdown there.

Don't think there will be any Mercs. Saul is gone and he said he couldn't get them anyway.
Rediculous Sayings.
