Firstly, the UK isn't running away, it's currently engaged in negotiations. Secondly, the EU is refusing to provide any details of it's financial demands. Thirdly, there will be no winners from restricted trade, though the EU as an entity will suffer most because of the balance of trade.

Exactly!!! There will be no winners in this. If the EU punishes the UK with trade restrictions they will be punishing themselves when one of the major outlets for their car industry dries up and redundancies loom in the Rheinland. Both sides need to get real smoke a doobie and make this work to everyone's advantage.

Truth is  Britain is  bankrupt ,  we have a massive debt crisis .
What  British owned ,  manufacturing companies , if any do  the  UK have ,
GB is well and truely ,   fdk .

If that's the case why is a third of Eastern Europe working there?. If there is no manufacturing what are they doing?. I've just retired from a UK manufacturer that's been in business for over 30 years and is thriving. Business has never been so good surely it can't just be one company in the U.K. or were we an anomaly?.

  3. I think there are some more battles in history. Who got a list ???:cheesy:

Well there was the Spanish Armada which Sir Francis Drake and Lord Charles Howard saw off in AD1588.
Of course there were the Norman invasions in the 11th century (sorry no exact date on this) where the French invaded Britain causing untold stress and hardship to the people and we never got a penny in compensation. And well before that the Romans (Italians) conquered Britain Emperor Claudius in AD48 and plundered her assets for hundreds of years and that's why I would never buy a Fiat or an Alfa Romeo not because their crap [emoji90].
Sorry well into my bottle of JD now I'm drifting.

  4. It's easy, if UK doesn't want to pay then just put a 300% import tax on everything from the UK to EU until the debt is paid.... UK's industries and farmers will be happy and we can see what will happen as it will be like the car industry where they are investing in EU countries but not in the UK because of the coming Brexit!

And you don't think Britain would do the same? They import more than they export to the EU a lot more bring it on .

  5. And who will pay for the cost of helping to protect the UK during the Battle of Britain when without the Americans Britain would have fallen to the Nazis?

And what about all those nationalities whose countries were not involved but who threw their hat into the ring to fight against fascism/Nazism?

We paid ourselves the last war loan was paid to the USA in 2006 by Britain. Without that help we would have fallen I grant you that but we had to pay it was not free.

  6. It is obviously what many of the OLD did not expect.
Interesting is the fact that "Great Britain" sneaked back all time in history when it comes to pay money. So they left China, India and Kenya when it was evident that they could not have any benefit at all. (Or they were thrown out) And so it happened that they went into EU and now they can't see their fortune.....so they leave. It's a "CHERRY PICKING COUNTRY". Now Britain will become a unimportant little country which has still follow the EU rules (free trade) but without power and influence.

Haha funny you obviously don't know the British

  7. 'We want our money back'

    Here we go again......
the continuing animosities between the Pro-EU and the Pro-Brexit followers.
Considering that in this forum are only OLD and VERY OLD people participating we can see that the majority of Brits are favoring May's policy whereas the continental Europeans are strictly following EU regulations including paying the outstanding money back to EU. The Europeans are for freedom and don't like to have borders. Same as the overwhelming majority of YOUNG Brits. So we have the fact that the OLD BRITS cut off the future of the young.
May will not rule forever, maybe not even one year. And after a while there is time for a new referendum. This time the YOUNG will go for voting. For sure. But in the meantime UK will go into one direction only: DOWN. It's a shame.

Out means out even the EU says we won't get back in so don't reckon there will be another referendum myself but who am I just another oldie.

No you didn't. You can thank the volunteers from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other "Dominions" for that. The two decisive  battles that  changed the course of the war were Amiens and the 2nd  Battle of the Somme. At Amiens, the Australian Corps and Canadian Corps delivered decisive thrusts against the Germans. Combined with British and French attacks and supported by  the  Americans, the Germans were  decimated.
At the 2nd battle of the Somme the heroic Australian Corps crossed the Somme and pushed the Germans back to the Hindenburg line. The New Zealand units  made decisive  captures. The Australian victory terrified  German's remaining allies and they started  suing for peace.

Yes,  great Britain played a key role and the world owes heroes  Sir Winston and   Sir Arthur Harris an infinite debt of gratitude, and must never forget the suffering and damage incurred by Great Britain   but this does not  justify the two above awful claims.

Yes I am well aware of the sacrifices of the British Colonials in both world wars without which we would have stood no chance. Think we have drifted off the point though from the original post which was about the EUs payment demands.

  9. If it wasn't for the profits they make, we'd have no research into new drugs.  Look into what it costs to bring a new drug to market.  It's insane.

What business doesn't want to make a profit?  And to say they don't care about patients is BS.  People go into medicine to help others, not just make money.

My point is there is profit then there is greed and a lot of drugs that cost pennies to make and distribute are sold at vast profits so where's the caring for patients who can't afford to pay?

  10. Technically true,, but only in terms of declarations of war, which are not actual "attacks".  The French and BEF (British Expeditionary Force) were  in fact attacked by the Germans.  Prior to that was the "Phoney War" or Sitzkrieg, lasting from 1 SEP 1939 (the invasion of Poland; Britain declared war two days later on the 3rd) until the German attack on France and the low countries on 10 May 1940, during which there were no hostilities (hence the name).  So your statement that "they weren't attacked by the Germans" is patently false; they in fact most certainly and famously were.

We declared war on Germany because they invaded Poland and would not withdraw. British troops were attacked when Germany invaded France as you say the expeditionary force and consequently the Dunkirk evacuation. The original poster quoted that Britain entered the war because they were attacked which is incorrect.

  11. A deal is a deal.  If UK went in on an agreement, then it should honor that agreement.  Dragging up stuff from 70 yrs ago is not helpful.  Plus, Britain was attacked in WWII, so it was in their interest to counter-attack the attackers.  It so happened that much of that counter-attack was on French soil.

David Davis the U.K. chief negotiator is a Yorkshireman like myself and we are renowned for being frugal .He won't pay a penny more than he needs to to the EU. Just to put the record straight England declared war on Germany because they invaded Poland they weren't attacked by the Germans.

  12. 40 minutes ago, Credo said:

What they don't tell you is that the same medications used in the US are exported to foreign countries where they play 1/10th of the amount, and the companies still make a profit.   But there is no indication there is any effort to bring down the cost of medication.   I wonder why?

Greed that's why!. Big companies driven by profit know they won't sell their products in developing countries at that price. But in the west they will sell for as much as they can, not a care for the patient or wether they recover. As long as their execs get their bonuses.

  13. Was that ฿500 total or 500 each?
I was also going to relate that I was told if a person has a valid home country license they do not have to take a drive test etc. can anyone tell me how long the residence certificate from immigration is good for?

Baht 250 each and valid for 2 years. Classed as a temporary licence. After the 2 years you can apply for a further 10 year licence with no further test requirements. It used to be a lifetime licence but they changed it a few years ago so some of the people who've been here a while may have a lifetime licence.

  14. my queensland licence just listed the different classes, not car and motorbike so i had to do the whole thing again twice. once for car and once for motorbike. what a hassle.

That is a hassle I did loads of research before we moved and it was easy to get an international permit in the U.K. Just applied online to the AA quoting my U.K. driver number and when it came it listed all the licence categories I held. So glad I did now listening to what you had to do.
