  1. An IDP is really just a translation of your national driver's licence. If you hold a UK licence it's straightforward to get a Thai licence as no driving test is needed. Just the reaction, depth perception and colour tests.

Well I'm going to have to beg to differ on that one. If using a standard UK driving licence they will require a certified translation of that licence to issue a Thai licence. I guess it could also depend on who and where you apply but that was the info we got from DMT in Bangkok.

  2. that is interesting before I left Australia I went to get an international license, was told if you have  Australian license it Treated the same as an international in other countries, cause I asked are you sure? yes. so I only have to do the short test.

I'm from UK so might be different. I researched before I came. Another interesting fact I found out was if your driving on an international permit it becomes void insurance wise after 90 days you are required to get a Thai Licence. Again may be different with other insurance companies but mine actually showed me the small print. Worth checking if anybody's on an international permit.

  3. Could have saved a lot of hassle by getting an international driving permit from your native country (if you have a valid licence for that country) then you only have to do the traffic light, reaction and peripheral vision tests, sit through the Thai video and I paid Baht 500 for motorcycle and car licence valid for 2 years in and out in 2 hours here in Bangkok.

  4. If you are living in Thailand you should respect the traditions and customs of their people. Like someone's already said a big pile of shoes at the door gives a massive clue. But if you are a foreigner in your own house I say you are entitled to do just as you want. Got to say we do take our shoes off as we did in England before hand who knows what you could trail in off the street.

  5. Stay in the Philippines, holiday in Thailand ...... job done, pension back to normal.
Residency is a matter of opinion. So why tell anyone you LIVE in THAILAND (it's just stupid).
I live in the Philippines (1 week every 6 months) and holiday in Thailand (the other 25 weeks each 6 months).
    Pension claims totally legit.

Sounds like a plan to me haha [emoji23]

  6. Seriously I wouldn't know what to put in a PM, at this present moment in time in the UK with the ongoing financial world crisis, the problems in Europe etc, could or would you expect an MP getting up in the house with UK citizens facing job loses and cuts and putting the question :-
" I want all UK pensioners living abroad who have had their pensions frozen in certain countries where have chose to live to have all their backdated rises not received, paid in full and annual increases given."
Can you picture the response, I don't think any consideration would be given or the fact that :-
They don't get use of the NHS ambulance services or doctors in the UK.
They don't get to use free bus & train passes.
They don't get any winter payment allowances.
They don't get the use of our police force.
    Our fire service etc.
I wouldn't think there would be any support from pensioners stuck in the UK either.
The response would be " More Money What shock1.gif they don't have contribute 44 years now only 30 years, they don't pay Purchase TAX or V.A.T. in the UK." " Sit down you fool " " Next ".
I do feel sorry for some especially the ones who wanted to stay in Thailand but was left no choice but to go back home, the fact it would end up costing the UK more because of it, would not even be brought up.

Hi I see you liked a sarcastic comment from meat boy on a what I thought serious post I put up today that was closed regarding indexing. Glad you find this amusing just wanted to help people. Just for info I am not of state retirement age for 11 years yet and am comfortable on a company pension and could manage without it. Of course I researched it before I came just don't find it fair and wanted to do something about it. If this is the reaction from people no wonder you aren't getting anywhere. Good luck with it all I'm off back in the pool [emoji41]

  7. Hi all don't know if this has been covered before but retiring to Thailand from the UK I have just found out that your UK pension is not indexed linked so you do not receive the yearly increase even though you have paid into the scheme all your life. Some countries like USA and even Jamaica and Philippines have reciprocal agreements with U.K. and get the yearly increase. I have noticed that there are lobbying groups for expats in Canada and Australia who don't have indexing wondered if there was anything in Thailand to get involved with because this is so wrong. If anything you should get more as your no longer using any facilities in U.K. or using the NHS.

  8. It does.  We run this world whether you like it or not.  We influence the "leaders" of this world and they bend to our will.  If not, we sweeten the pot a bit.  If that doesn't work, we kill them.  Remember Saddam?

America does not run the world . People like the Rothchilds run the world through banking. Hey and guess what they don't run North Korea's banking system yet along with only Cubas. Guess both those countries are due some Democracy some time soon from the chosen puppet American war machine bank rolled by the elites.

  9. Just to chuck something else into the pot an international driving permit although valid for one year is really only usable in Thailand for 90 days. Reading in the small print on my insurance it says insurance is void after 90 days unless a Thai driving licence is obtained. Don't know if all insurances are the same like but might be worth checking if your on an international permit.

  10. Don't know about test but I've just got my licence using an international driving permit issued in U.K. By the AA and they never even asked to see my UK driving licence  this end.Just had to do a few easy tests, traffic light colours, peripheral vision test then watch a video after which a 2 year licence was issued. Could you get someone in UK to get you an international permit £8 I think I paid and then Baht 250 here it would be the easiest route rather than a full bike test I reckon.

What do you think would happen if they tried to destroy a new Revo? Pickup trucks have gotten a lot more refined and are certainly not as tough as in the past. Some people have incredible brand loyalty. I have no brand loyalty. Years ago the company I worked for bought me a new Isuzu. It idled rough and the fenders shook at stop lights. I swore I would never buy an Isuzu. Things change. I now have an Isuzu V-Cross. That rough idling noisy engine is history. At highway speed, you cannot even hear the engine. When I was shopping for a new truck, I test drove many of what was available. The Isuzu was a major surprise, quiet, tight and a decent ride. I was really wanting a Toyota but the price and dealer irritated me. I went directly back to Isuzu and ordered exactly what I wanted. Isuzu gave me more truck for the baht. No regrets here.

Yeah I'm not so naive to think a Revo would stand up to that abuse it was the pedigree of the vehicle I was getting at. Your right with brand loyalty and that was the one of the deciding factor if I'm honest as when we tested the Isuzu I was impressed with it , nice and solid , well finished and smooth gear change. Had Toyotas in the UK after years of Vauxhalls and Fords and there was no comparison so I stuck with what I was happy with despite one of my friends telling me the front of the Revo looks like a Chinese amphibious car.Needless to say he'll be taking a taxi from Swampy next time he comes[emoji12]

  12. A chap near us just bought a new Revo TuRD with every stick-on bit of kit known to man on it. God, it's hideous! At least all the windows are tinted.

Well I'm past the stage where I buy a vehicle for its looks and street cred,I based my decision on reliability and build quality, and after watching top gear try to destroy a Hilux and fail even Thai roads should pose little issue (I hope) [emoji12]

  13. After a lot of research we were still undecided which pick up to get. Lots of different views from family. In the end we went for what we wanted not what was cheapest on the basis that we would be keeping it till it disintegrated. So even though it's not as pretty as other trucks we went for the Revo and got to say I don't regret it.

  14. Bullshit I've lent my wife's family money on several occasions and received every penny back. Not all Thais are the same and a lot of people on here have had bad experiences hence the negativity. I guess if your asking the question your not at all sure about them so in that case I say don't give them it. As a previous poster said get em some buckets till the harvest comes in.

  15. Why not phase out plastic all together and use glass returnable bottles (with a deposit). Kill two birds with one stone, no plastic waste and no risk of chemicals leeching from the plastic into the water. While we're at it get rid of plastic bags which are more of an issue anyway and go back to brown paper bags or natural materials like banana leaves which are decomposable. In fact let's just admit it we had it right in the 60s and 70s.
