This story creeps me out.

Geez. 700k baht? I think most people would just take it. Honesty in this case was NOT rewarded. Tough for her.
-
just pay the fine. it's all about money.
-
Why hire a foreigner when a Thai is a fraction of the salary??
-
Lemme guess. She's works at a bar? And she wants to quit work and feed her sick buffalo?
-
It's just terribly situated the way it is in there. The location/layout is bad. I don't know how any business in there can survive. Every business in there has a lack of customers.
-
Nobody deserves such a fate. Hope they catch the scum that did this.

I'm sure the US govt. thinks they "scored one" today. But hopefully his policies and ideas will live on. He did a lot of good things for the poor. Of course the fascist US govt. cannot tolerate such policies. May Venezuela remain a thorn in America's side.

What I don't get is, these Cheap Charlie bars should be full of happy smiling faces because they are drinking exactly where their wallet allows them and drinking where they want to be. However, all I see are unkempt, washed up, miserable looking patrons with the weight of the whole world on their shoulders.
Fair enough. But most of those guys have been here a while and they know the right bars to go to so they won't get ripped off like the newbies. They're saving loads of baht while you and others are getting soaked with inflated bar bills.
-
That's ridiculous. You can stop in at new plaza and get yourself a beer for 40-50 baht. 180 baht is fine for a gogo but not for a beer bar.

Not many young guys here(i.e. under age 50). When you live in Thailand it's nothing but old farang guys and their pensions. Imagine what it's like to be in your 20's and living here like I was some time ago. It's quite isolating unless you are in with the English teaching crowd.
-
My wife wonders where the farang are on WS these days. She thinks they are broke maybe? Well, WS is not Pattaya. If you travel to the dark side the number or Russians and Indians shrinks dramatically. How many Russians and Indians live on the dark side? Probably only a few.
-
That's what happens here. Less customers = higher prices.

Taxes? Of course it's easier to dodge them when you're self employed. Getting a paycheck is a terrible way to earn a living because you're forced to report it.
Taxes are bad too. Most of it just goes to people who aren't doing any work anyways. Infrastructure my arse.

Pattaya. Not only is it a classy family resort, it's also a new destination for vegans and health nuts.
-
Think I've got it. What meds to get?
-
The only reason I'd move there is because of the cheaper nightlife activities. Otherwise, why bother? I've got all I need here in Thailand. And if you like those sorts of ladies well just travel to Surin and Buriram. Plenty around those parts.
-
Easy. Just avoid the silly tourist places. I have my wife find apartments for us. She always find a good deal. No electric scams either.
-
Well, I've just booked a 3,000 baht a month apartment. No air-con, no hot water. How's that for dealing with things? At least I'm saving money on rent.
-
Ouch. 45 baht to the pound. Nice. I wonder if Thaivisa will become less British soon..

The healthcare conditions in some so called "first world" countries like the US are far worse. Terribly expensive and only accessible by the well off. I'd rather be poor in Thailand than in the US(my former country of residence).

Basically any beach resort is full of them. The ONLY way to get away from them is to move up north to Isaan where they rarely venture. Actually, the surest way to get away from them is to avoid ANY areas where tourists go.

I personally think Pattaya is the armpit of Thailand for the simple reason of a few ruining it for the many - Thats why I couldn't live there.
Pattaya appears to attract increasing amounts of the dregs of society (Western and Thai) ruining it for the many decent folk who choose to live there.
It is a real shame as Pattaya could be so much more.
Poor planning, money hungry development and corruption have and are destroying what could be a much better city.
As a Westerner its very difficult to be somewhere like Pattaya (and Phuket and Samui for that matter) and be treated ordinarily.
I don’t expect to go anywhere and receive special treatment, but I don’t expect the negative treatment often displayed in these area’s. I feel as though we (as foreigners) are all tarred with the same tourist brush of subhuman indifference.
While it’s not for some, I find Bangkok cosmopolitan enough that it’s easier to simply blend into a part of a normally functioning society where the treatment of expats is fairly equal to the treatment of Thais; nothing special and overwhelming, but nothing impolite, rude or indifferent either.
I walk / drive around Bangkok and receive normal treatment. Nothing special, nothing terrible, just exactly as I would expect to be treated in my home country.
This ‘normal’ treatment is not afforded to us in some tourist area’s where money hungry Thai’s struggle for position to secure the Tourist Baht.
Accompanying this struggle is often a level of displayed contempt. When this is combined with impolite and debaucherous tourists the level of anonymity between Thai’s and Tourists increases to such a degree displayed in certain areas of Pattaya.
That’s not to say all of Pattaya is like this. There is much more to Pattaya than the overwhelmingly objectionable ‘dodgy’ parts – But, this appears to be spreading along with the apparent crime levels.
Of course, Bangkok is no gem, but IMO it more similar to other Capital cities with its better and worse areas and as a foreigner I feel I more normal in Bangkok than I could in Pattaya (or Phuket or Samui)…
I don’t wish to knock those who have chosen Pattaya (or other places mentioned), but I do find that it would be difficult to live there and live what for me is a normal life, integrating with society, having large numbers of Thai and Western friends whom I’m socialise with and who’s company I enjoy.
This is just and opinion… and like all Opinions, they are like <deleted> – everyone else’s stinks.

Haven't had any problems here whatsoever. I've lived as an expat here for many years. Thais here in Pattaya have been very kind to me and rarely display such greedy attitudes as you suggested. Although I do agree it's gone downhill in the last few years. Takes a special person to live here full time. It's not for everyone.

I've gotten horribly drunk hundreds of times and I'm still here. But I drink beer only. Maybe that makes a difference. I think it's a lot easier to overdo it with vodka and other hard liquor. The one time I got drunk on a bottle of vodka was the day I was involved in a serious road accident. Never again.
