ATM has nothing to do with it. ATM has no effect on the exchange rate you receive(unless you choose the option of letting them convert for you).

ATM makes one charge of 200 to 220 baht). The rest is charged by your bank.

For those whose bank does not charge, they pay only the ATM fee. Some people avoid even the ATM fee by taking a cash advance over a bank counter.

Ok either way I always saw that using ATM was a lot more expensive a few years back but now its actually cheaper than using transferwise. So then why would anyone use transferwise?

  2. I just pulled out using my USA TDameritrade debit card recently and saw that it only charged for 400 baht to take out 20,000 (ATM 200 baht fee and exchange rate). I also tried it previously with 12,000 baht and it only charged me 200. This is actually on par or less fees than using transferwise. Am I missing something?

I remember long time ago, they used to trick people into using the thai banks conversion rate and the fees and rates were A LOT higher.

Did this change? And is it now on par with using transferwise?

Transfers visa ACH in the states goes through Bangkok Bank's branch in New York. They are normally credited in your account in less than 24 hours after received in New York. Not sure where you got the 3 days from unless that is how long it takes your bank to process a ACH transfer.

You can also do transfers to them via swift using their swift code BKKBTHBK.

This page on their website mentions both options.

    ah this makes sense

  4. $11.7 USD if you include Bangkok Banks rate compared to the market rate.

Is there a cheaper and equally faster way to send money through ACH?

I'm thinking one way is to have my friend send me a new debit card from the states and just withdraw the money from the ATM (continue without conversion so I get visa rates which is better) and be charged the 150 baht?

  5. OK so I was able to sign up for it. I basically had to keep trying and tell them how to deal with foreign accounts. I came to the conclusion that they are not trained nor know the policies dealing with foreigners. But they haev to send my application to HQ and mail out my password to sign up.

I really think it might be important to know why they wont let tourist open internet banking or the phone app? What would that be about? What are they worried about?

I had the same problem years back when I applied for Internet Banking. When Bangkok Bank opens a new account it can be registered as a resident account or a non-resident account, and if your account is registered as a non-resident account it is not possible to register for Internet Banking (not only is it not possible to register via ATM, but your branch is also unable to do it). To make that possible your account first have to be re-classified as a resident account.

It took Bangkok Bank several attempts and about three months to successfully change my account so I could have Internet Banking, and it probably would never have happened if it hadn't been for the help of two foreign Bangkok Bank employees (Ian and Dave) who were members of ThaiVisa back then. Hopefully the Bangkok Bank employees are now more familiar with what is required to change your account status.

Have you tried setting up ibanking via the ATM application method yet?

Here's Bangkok Bank instructions on how to do it.  It just may work for you.  Otherwise, you'll need to go back to the branch you applied for your bank account at and apply for ibanking there.

it works!  took 2 weeks to link my brokerage account in

new york to the bangkok bank account; required to download

a form, sign and mail in.  (no notary or medallion needed).

got email from broker on 8/9 that link was active, sent

$1000 that night online EFT.  email on 8/10 received

that transfer had been sent to bank bank new york branch.

took five days to post to bangkok account, possibly due to

the 4-day holiday here.  checked sunday evening...nothing.

8/15 (checked atm at noon) showed deposit of 34,246

    rates last night 8/14 9PM:  BKK BK  34.38  XE.com  34.77

rate 2pm today:  SCB bangkapi mall  34.18

    online 3pm today:  BKK BK  34.22  XE.com  34.61

and what rate did i get for the conversion?

xfer $1000, minus $5 for New York Branch.

deposit after local branch fee (min 200, max 500) of 200 baht:  34,246

    (fee works out to $5.78)

deposit before service fee (my calculation anyway):  34,446

conversion rate:  34.619  total fee for $1000 transfer:  $10.78

why did it take 2 weeks to link your brokerage account? Did you use BK bank New york branch routing number to send 2 small deposits? Which should just take 3 days?
