  1. more than the meter? I mean Taxi drivers in countries I have visited elsewhere (Korea, Singapore, Malaysia) do not ask for more than the meter. Only other place where they expect more than meter is America but they have the tipping fiasco.

I am truly trying to understand this and ask if anyone knows how much their average wage is. I know Korean, Singaporeans and Malaysian Taxi drivers get more money but they also live in a place with higher living costs.

I want to find out the average wage of taxi drivers so I can pin point if they are getting too low wages or if some of them really are getting greedy or just shady.

I know this is not a foreigner thing because they do this to Thai people too.

  2. What ever you think about her politics, one thing should be clear: Ms. Yingluck IS the democratically elected PM of Thailand. Whether she, her brother, her party bought the votes does not matter in first place. if the VOTERS can be bought, it is a voters problem. If the VOTERS accept that the government rips them off, it is the VOTERS problem.

And it is the problem of the opposition parties when they can not reach out to the voters and make it clear to them that they have a better choice. Hard work is what the opposition should invest in order to inform the voters about their ideas and make sure that voters understand that they would be better off with voting for them.

That is democracy. Each democratic country has the government it deserves.

A "peoples council" as Mr. Suthep seeks to form is not what democracy is about. A "peoples council" is just another form of dictatorship by people who think that they know better than the majority about what is best for a country. The best example of such "peoples council" can be found in the communist countries of the world.

LOL imagine if Americans protested about the same thing. Americans would be protesting all the time.

  3. You are correct that most Thais have zero idea of world politics. They are not interested.

Your contention that the current upheavals are based on a Marxist revolution are wide of the mark.

Try reading some political histories of Thailand and you will see a long-standing battle between, on the one hand, a nexus of military officers, senior mandarins and other senior figures in the clergy, press, academia all claiming to be defending the nation and the institution that is above politics and, on the other hand, political parties with widespread support from the rural populace in regional bases claiming to be the face of democracy.

The names change, the main actors change but the essential political battle remains unchanged.

    Good post. Thanks.

  4. Wow. Lots of Grinchs on here. We will be having 40+ of our friends and family over for turkey dinner. Lots of presents to go around. I got my wife a new pair of boots from Aldo , a plane tickets for another visit to Vancouver(My hometown) and a stocking full of make-up etc. Christmas is not only about being christian anymore. Its a great excuse to have a great party and have fun shopping for presents.

Merry Christmas And Happy New Year

You're not looking at the bigger picture. Yes Christmas is not only being about Christian anymore. It's a holiday that is exersized in consumerist societies to make you buy things and stimulate the economy (or just make corporations make big earnings). They just want to give you the impression that giving things and buying things for people shows your love. Which is ridiculous if you think about it.

Of course the malls want you to "have a fun shopping for presents" but you dont need to do that to show your love.

It's actually more sad when I see single moms working double shifts during the holidays because western society tells them she's only a good loving mom if she buys christmas presents to her kids. If she doesn't, shes a total failure BECAUSE SHE COULD'NT BUY PRESENTS.

  5. Ask a Thai person if they know who Pol Pot is that massacred 1.5 million upper and middle class Cambodians trying to bring down capitalism and westernism and they will say no (Unless they took a Masters course in SE Asian History at a University).

I found out Thailand doesn't really go out of their way to teach them because they helped and traded with the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot up until his death. Some of the reasons was they wanted to have a buffer from the expanding Vietnamese and Arms trade with the Khmer Rouge.

It's kind of eerily similar that the Red Shirts and the Communist party in Thailand is fighting the Middle and upper class of Bangkok. Just like how it started in Cambodia only over 50 years ago. Do you think the same could happen in Thailand if it gets to a boiling point?

A lot of wars started for lesser reasons.

  6. Not sure about the laws in Dubai but I suspect actually Thailand might just be the softer option in this case..........

I dont think they make you go through customs again if you are just transferring. That would be a pita lol. They're not really stepping into Dubai.

  7. I was with Buddy Broadband up until August then I changed to True and never looked back. My experience with Buddy Broadband was HORRIBLE.

First of all, their accounting department is horrid. They dont know the simple task of pro-rating an account. For two weeks I had to go on a trip so I did not pay for the pre-pay for those 2 weeks. When I came back and started paying the 1200 bath mid month, they only gave me 2 weeks of service. I called them up and asked "why can't you just adjust my pre-pay date?" and "why didn't you just pro-rate it?" they had no idea on how to do that. When I told them to ask the manager to give me a call back, he or she never did. So they made me pay another 1200 baht after 2 weeks. I should have cancelled my account then and there but I did not have time to wait a week for a new service provider to install since I work from home.

Secondly, I was on a supposed "12 MB connection" for 1200 baht with BuddyBB for one year. When I switched to True and asked for a 12 MB connection, the installer told me the building was only capable of 7MB. So the whole year that I was with BuddyBB, they were ripping me off 600 baht a month.

I am so glad they are going out of business that's for sure.

  8. so i should i have no problem getting my second 60 day visa after two 30 days and soon to be one 15 day visa?

there is a limit of 2 60 day visa before arrival correct?

also four 15 day visa limit?

no limit on 30 day arrival from air?

I forgot to mention i had a 3 day overtstay on my first re-entry and a 8 day on the second re-entry. will that be a issue for them?

  9. American 30 years old

I've been reading up on the forums for a couple hours but i am still confused on how many visa i can get

Basically i had two 30 day free entries from air and one 60 day visa from vientiane laos.

I am hearing you can only stay in thailand for 90 days period within 180.

I realized the Thai Embassy is closed on the weekend so I am thinking of going to Thailand during that time and returning to get my 60 day visa.

What are the limits on each visa?

    15 day?

    30 day on air arrival?

    and 60 day visas?
