  1. When I stayed a few months in Chiang Mai, there was a bird that I infrequently heard but never saw. I've never heard it anywhere else in LOS, but it might be in other locales.

It "sings" a doleful, trilling sound, like it had lost its mate. It starts low, coos up the scale and back down, slowing towards the end. All told, maybe 7 or 8 seconds. Very mournful sound.

I never caught sight of the bird. I've endlessly checked websites, to no avail. Anyone happen to know the bird? English and Thai name? Where I can see a photo?

    Thanks.

  2. Thanks.

My GF told me that Akarawat could mean brave, and was the proper name, while Yingyai was the nickname. Oh, well ...

Anyway, does anyone, in that case, know a proper name or nickname that means brave or courage or integrity, anything along those lines?

    Thanks.

(No, I'm not trying to come up with a Thai nickname for myselflaugh.png .

  3. Fighting. Good buffalo can rake in 500,000 Baht in one fight.

That's nothing. On the internet, one buffalo can rake in millions a year in health care donations from guys in Europe. All it takes is a photo of one lying down with "poor" people standing about it looking worried.

  4. 1. The dental hospital on Soi 49 Sukhumvit. The best cleaning i have found. Not the cheapest, around 1500 - 2000 baht inclusive of check up and cleaning, assuming you don't get Xray or fluoride treatment with it. Need to speak up on that as sometimes they do it without asking first. but no problems at all if you say you don't want it.

    2. Either of these;

Chulalonghorn Hospital "after hours" clinic -- 13th floor (I think, check this) from 4 PM onward. A quasi-private service at a government hospital.

    OR

    2. St Luois Hospital.

As I don't know the type of "intestinal complaint" (infection, motility disorder, tumor/polyp etc) I can't recommend a specific doctor.

    Thanks much!

  5. Some recommendations, please, Sukhumvit or immediate area:

    1 - Dentist for cleaning (who has very clean set-up and dosen't rush the job);

    and

2 - Hospital with reasonable fees for internal med doc regarding ongoing intestinal complaint. Government hospital is fine if the doctor is good. Bumrungrad is no longer in my favor - prices have risen dramatically and the service has declined.

    Thanks!

  6. to all those, who claim balis beaches are better than thailands...

could you please name the beaches, you like that much?

i have never seen any more beautiful beachsites than in thailand...

Dude, if you have never seen beaches anywhere more beautiful than Thailand, you haven't travelled much, or you're Stevie Wonder.

I have seen beaches all along the East and West coast of the US and Canada, Hawaii, the East and West Coast of Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia and some other places and Thailand's beaches are as beautiful as any that I have seen.

Try Fiji, Tahiti, Polynesia, the Turks and Caicos, or the Truk Islands, to name a few....far less pollution. People don't litter there the way, sadly, they do here. And, the locals wear bikinis whistling.gif !!! (Unfortunately, in Tahiti, that includes the hairy-backed French men in Speedos sick.gif )

nowhere in the world you see that turquoise water, such fine sand, many palm trees, and easy to bath (no rocks etc)...

the scenery from the sea back to the island is always totally stunning and beautiful...

    bali/lombok dont have nice beaches...

they are very wide, in the meantime really clean, and nice sand... but the water doesnt have that color, nor is the setting beautiful... water/tide is here a problem too, its more than in thailand and the sea is often very rough (also more than in thailand)...

the tide is a real issue on some islands, and some spots are possibly a good choice for experienced surfers, but beginners will have a hard time...

  8. What do you consider as cheap?

Anything under a thousand if the facilities are clean, quiet and moderately comfortable. There are deals in Sukhumvit for 1500 a night and very nice, so I'd have to save at least 500.

    Thanks for the replies.

  9. Either way, I refuse to be involved in any sign which involves servitude. Before anyone starts to bang on about culture, would they be willing to treat women like chattel in a middle eastern country for example? Would they also accept FGM?

Honestly, i tried it both ways and got no further ahead or behind. I give my wifes father a wai now and again to keep things civil at home, but the rest, nah, as long as they keep referring to me (and you) as FARANG, I will continue to not act like a Thai. Ko Jai Mai? ermm.gif

Not bothered about farang myself. Just refuse to engage in actions or behaviour which indicate a standing of one human above or below another.

So you don't believe in showing respect for your elders? I feel sure you mispoke in the haste of replying.

I wai my landlord first because he is 86 and has worked hard all his life, still does, and demonstrates wisdom in his actions and words. He's worthy of my respect. But, other than such examples as that one, I don't wai, either.
