  1. Japan’s population of centenarians has reached a new milestone, with 99,763 people aged 100 or older as of September 1, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. This marks the 55th consecutive year the figure has hit a record high, reflecting the country’s remarkable longevity. The number of centenarians increased by 4,644 from last year, with women making up the vast majority at 87,784, or about 88 percent. When Japan began tracking the data in 1963, there were just 153 centenarians nationwide. The figure surpassed 1,000 in 1981, reached 10,000 in 1998, 50,000 in 2012, and 90,000 in 2022. Now, Japan is on the verge of crossing the symbolic 100,000 mark. As of September, Japan recorded 80.58 centenarians per 100,000 people. Shimane Prefecture led the country with 168.69 centenarians per 100,000 residents, ranking highest for the 13th straight year. Kochi and Tottori also showed high ratios at 157.16 and 144.63 respectively. On the other hand, Saitama had the lowest rate at 48.50, followed by Aichi (53.00) and Osaka (55.44). Japan’s oldest living person is Shigeko Kagawa, a 114-year-old woman in Nara Prefecture. The oldest man is Kiyotaka Mizuno, aged 111, from Shizuoka Prefecture. Notably, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Reona Esaki also joined the centenarian ranks this year, celebrating his 100th birthday in March. During fiscal 2025, around 52,310 people are expected to turn 100. As part of a long-standing tradition, the government honours new centenarians with congratulatory letters and commemorative silver cups, highlighting the nation’s cultural respect for longevity. Japan’s ageing society continues to be a defining feature, presenting both a point of pride and a challenge for the future. Key Takeaways: Japan has 99,763 centenarians, a record high for 55 years in a row. Women make up nearly 88% of the total, with Shimane leading longevity rankings. The oldest Japanese are Shigeko Kagawa (114) and Kiyotaka Mizuno (111). Adapted From: https://japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/society/general-news/20250912-280456/
  2. Shooter in Charlie Kirk Murder Case The FBI has released new CCTV footage showing the gunman alleged to have fatally shot conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, 31, in the neck at a university event in Utah. The video shows a man dressed in all black—including a black T-shirt with an American flag and an eagle motif—running along a university rooftop before dropping to the ground and heading toward a wooded area. He was also seen wearing sunglasses and Converse shoes. Authorities describe him as a “person of interest” in the homicide. Governor Spencer Cox said that over 7,000 tips have been received by the bureau—making it the largest number of leads submitted to the FBI since the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Investigators are analysing forensic evidence and exploring legal avenues, including the possibility of seeking the death penalty when the suspect is caught. Officials caution that misinformation is spreading online, allegedly amplified by foreign bots from Russia and China. While the motive behind the killing is still under review, former President Donald Trump told press that law enforcement has certain indications and promised more information soon. In a separate announcement, Trump said he would posthumously award Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The FBI has offered a reward of up to USD $100,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the shooter. Meanwhile, the suspect remains at large, and authorities are urging public help to identify him using the released CCTV. --- Key Takeaways: 1. Suspect profile & footage released — CCTV shows a man in dark clothing with an eagle-flag T-shirt, sunglasses, and Converse shoes fleeing the scene. 2. Investigation & public response growing — Over 7,000 tips received; forensic work underway; authorities consider death penalty if arrested. 3. Misinformation concerns & motive unclear — Government warns of false info spread online; motive not yet confirmed; political figures promise updates. 5. Bourton-on-the-Water, a village in Gloucestershire often dubbed the “Venice of the Cotswolds,” draws thousands of visitors every year with its honey-coloured stone houses, stone bridges over the River Windrush, and traditionally English charm. With a permanent population of under 3,500 people, the village sees a flood of tourists during peak season — some estimates suggest around 300,000 visitors annually. While the influx supports local businesses (cafés, tearooms, craft shops), it also brings downsides: congestion, parking pressure, crowding on footpaths and riverbanks, and a sense among locals that the village’s peaceful character is under threat. Debate is growing over how to manage tours, buses, and visitor flow without killing what makes Bourton-on-the-Water special. Proposed measures include restricting coach access, better parking solutions, and promoting visits during off-peak times. Some suggest overnight stays so visitors experience quieter early mornings and evenings. Despite the challenges, many agree that with thoughtful management, Bourton-on-the-Water could retain its charm while still benefiting from tourism. Careful planning, local involvement, and infrastructure upgrades are key to keeping its beauty without letting crowds define the place. --- Key Takeaways: 1. Visitor surge strains local resources. Peak-season tourism brings many more people than the village can comfortably handle — causing parking, traffic, and crowding issues. 2. Charm and authenticity at risk. What draws people in — tranquil riverside walks, stone bridges, quaint shops — is under pressure from overtourism and infrastructure overload. 3. Balanced solutions possible. Strategies like limiting coach access, encouraging off-peak or overnight stays, and improving parking/public transport could help preserve Bourton-on-the-Water’s character. 6. Meghan Markle posted a new photograph shortly after Prince Harry’s long-awaited reunion with King Charles, describing her day in California as one that “feels like magic.” The Duchess of Sussex shared an image via her “As Ever” brand showing her gardening in Montecito: dressed in a white shirt and sun hat, surrounded by golden light and greenery, she captioned it “Harvest hues, golden views, and a season that feels like magic.” This comes just hours after Harry met with his father at Clarence House — their first personal meeting in 19 months. While Meghan stays in the US with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, Harry traveled alone to the UK for engagements including the WellChild Awards, a donation to BBC Children in Need, and visits connected to his charities. He also visited the Centre for Blast Injury Studies at Imperial College London. At the reunion with Charles, Harry reportedly stayed around 54 minutes over tea. He later described his father as “great, thank you” when asked by reporters. The photo adds to speculation about the state of relations across the royal family. Meghan’s brand continues to gain traction, with lifestyle posts mixing domestic scenes, food, and nature striking a contrast with the public, sometimes tense dramas of royal life. Observers say that Harry’s visit may represent a thaw, though family dynamics remain delicate. Some royal watchers believe this moment might be a turning point, while others caution that reconciliation is far from certain—and that public gestures are only part of the picture. Key Takeaways: 1. Meghan’s “magic” post: She shared a tranquil garden photo in California, using poetic language that suggests peace and growth. 2. Harry’s reunion with King Charles: After 19 months of estrangement, they met for tea at Clarence House; Harry later praised his father in brief comments. 3. Contrast between private and public life: As Harry engages in UK duties, Meghan remains in the US balancing her brand, motherhood, and distance — which some view as symbolic of current royal family tensions. 13. Fans of Red Dwarf have been dealt a blow: UKTV has officially cancelled the long-anticipated 90-minute special, even though the script was nearly finished. Co-creator Doug Naylor revealed that UKTV had signed off on development in early 2024 and the cast was on board. Naylor completed about two-thirds of the script and had recently signed his writer’s contract when UKTV delivered the bad news that they were halting all scripted comedy commissions — including Red Dwarf. The special’s storyline promised to be ambitious. It involved Dave Lister travelling back in time to help his 23-year-old self escape stasis, while Rimmer and his younger counterpart teamed up to pursue them under directives from JMC. UKTV confirmed in a statement that there are no current plans to produce further episodes of Red Dwarf. They praised their long-standing relationship with Doug Naylor and the cast — noting previous hits like the Back to Earth specials, several full series, and The Promised Land feature. As a result, hopes for the revival are dashed... at least for now. Although fans remain hopeful for another broadcaster or a different medium to revive the script, for the moment, the beloved sci-fi comedy remains officially on hiatus. Key Takeaways UKTV has cancelled the planned Red Dwarf special, halting new scripted comedy developments. Script nearly complete: Doug Naylor had finished around two-thirds of the script when the project was axed. No further episodes confirmed: UKTV states there are no current plans to commission more Red Dwarf content. --- Original source: Express article (via Express.co.uk)
  14. Robert Irwin, now a 21-year-old Dancing With The Stars contestant, recently spoke with People magazine about his mother, Terri Irwin, and her inspiring response to Steve Irwin’s tragic passing in 2006. “She picked up the pieces with such grace,” he said, describing Terri as “the bravest, most steadfast, determined human being” he's ever met—a “hero” who built their life with Steve and continued fiercely in his absence . Despite his early loss, Robert shared how he still feels his father's presence daily. “I feel as though I get a little piece of him back in everything I hear about him or each photo I see,” he said, noting that reaching life milestones has deepened his connection . He reflected on how losing his father at such a young age underscored life’s fragility, pushing him to seize every moment: “life is fragile... you have to take calculated risks… give everything 100 per cent” . Robert also reaffirmed his commitment to conservation, planning to return to his work at Australia Zoo following his DWTS run. His words resonate with gratitude—and a vivid reminder of how family and legacy can guide us through loss. Keywords: Robert Irwin, Terri Irwin, Steve Irwin, Australia Zoo, conservation, loss, resilience, People magazine. --- Key Takeaways Terri Irwin’s Resilience: Robert praises his mother for handling the loss of Steve Irwin with grace and unyielding strength. Living Legacy: Even in his absence, Steve remains an active presence in Robert’s life, now more deeply felt through milestones and memories. Life’s Fragility Motivates: Facing loss early taught Robert to embrace life boldly, making every moment count.
  15. NASA’s Perseverance rover has uncovered its most compelling evidence yet of possible ancient microbial life on Mars. A rock nicknamed Cheyava Falls—found in the Bright Angel formation of Neretva Vallis, an ancient riverbed within Jezero Crater—revealed unusual, poppy-seed and leopard-spot patterns embedded in reddish mudstone. Scientists believe these patterns, alongside detected organic carbon, oxidized iron, sulfur, and phosphorus, might indicate biosignatures—signs of biological activity—dating back billions of years. The discovery comes after a year of meticulous analysis, including efforts to rule out non-biological explanations. NASA officials, including Sean Duffy and Nicky Fox, describe the find as the “clearest sign” to date of ancient life on Mars, while emphasising the necessity of confirmatory testing. The sample—one of roughly 30 collected by Perseverance—is slated for future return to Earth for more detailed laboratory investigations, although the timeline remains uncertain. Scientists stress that while the discovery strongly suggests potential biosignatures, it doesn’t amount to definitive proof of life. Alternative geological or chemical processes could produce similar features. Nonetheless, the findings deepen our understanding of Mars’ capacity to have hosted microbial ecosystems during its wetter, early eras. --- Key Takeaways 1. Most compelling Mars biosignature yet – A rock with unique spot patterns and organic elements may signal ancient microbial life. 2. Rigorous analysis underway – Scientists have spent a year ruling out non-living explanations and plan to return samples to Earth for confirmation. 3. Not proven life—yet – The findings remain tentative; more lab work will determine whether these features are biological or abiotic Adapted From: https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/2107022/nasa-mars-signs-of-life Link to article in NATURE https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09413-0

  18. A remarkably preserved human skeleton — dubbed TBH1 — was discovered in Thung Bình 1 Cave, nestled within Vietnam’s Tràng An UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Excavated in a crouched, likely tightly bound position, TBH1 suffered a fatal injury to the upper ribs near the collarbone, inflicted by a sharp quartz tool. The surviving fracture later turned infected, suggesting the man endured for weeks or months before succumbing . Dating between 12 000 and 12 500 years ago, TBH1 represents one of the oldest and most informative human remains in Southeast Asia. The condition of the bones allowed reconstruction of his stature — about 1.7 m tall — and his age at death, approximately 35 years . Genetic analysis shows he belonged to macrohaplogroup M, a mitochondrial lineage shared among hunter-gatherer populations across South and Southeast Asia . What makes this discovery stand out is its dual insight: it’s the earliest physical trace of interpersonal violence in mainland Southeast Asia, and simultaneously a testament to social care — TBH1 lived long enough for the wound to become infected, implying help during his final days . Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the study enriches our understanding of prehistoric conflict, tool use, burial customs, and human sociality in late Pleistocene Vietnam. --- Key Takeaways 1. Ancient Evidence of Violence — TBH1 shows the earliest known sign of interpersonal conflict in mainland Southeast Asia, via a quartz-inflicted rib injury that became fatal. 2. Genetic and Anthropological Insight — The skeleton, aged around 35 and standing 1.7 m tall, carries mitochondrial DNA from macrohaplogroup M, linking him to ancient regional hunter-gatherer groups. 3. Burial and Community Care — The infected wound suggests survival beyond the initial trauma, hinting at social support, and the deliberate burial in a tightly bound position indicates ritual or respect.
