  2. SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A library book has been returned nearly 82 years after it was borrowed from the San Antonio Public Library. It came with a letter noting that “Grandma won’t be able to pay for it anymore.” The book is “Your Child, His Family, and Friends” by marriage and family counselor Frances Bruce Strain. It was checked out in July 1943 and returned this past June from a person in Oregon, the library said in a news release. “After the recent death of my father, I inherited a few boxes of books he left behind,” the person wrote in a letter that was shared by the library on Instagram and signed with the initials P.A.A.G. The book was a guide for parents on helping their children navigate personal relationships. It was checked out when the person’s father was 11 years old. https://apnews.com/article/library-book-returned-san-antonio-82-years-f828a745de1b250d9f8fb8b50dbc8e48?utm_source=copy&utm_medium=share
  3. Downing Street is now considering in detail the “workability” of a unique digital identifier for all residents that could be used to check an individual’s right to live and work in Britain as well as provide access to welfare, healthcare or housing. One senior minister said Starmer had ordered a “comprehensive and expansive look” at the role technology can play in government, including digital ID. “Keir is leading on it,” they said. “This is a serious piece of work. After a year in government, it is clear that technology is underpinning everything. Digital ID is foundational. Cabinet ministers say Keir Starmer has become increasingly convinced of the need to harness the power of technology to drive Whitehall efficiency, bear down on fraud and transform the relationship between citizens and the state. https://observer.co.uk/news/politics/article/this-is-serious-starmer-orders-move-towards-digital-id-system

  5. Last year, I (the reviewer not me!)put some miles on a unique $6,500 carbon-fiber push scooter reportedly cooked up off-hours by the design and race team over at Red Bull/Oracle. While the $6,500 urban scoot can’t top 20 mph due to legal constraints, it was nonetheless an intriguing design exercise, and it does go 20mph with aplomb - and miles of style for a lowly push scooter. https://www.forbes.com/sites/billroberson/2025/05/29/mercedes-amgpetronas-f1-racing-superfans-your-e-bike-has-arrived/ But, you'll be pleased to know its available in Thailand! 😁 Starting at 182,000 baht. I'm sure they're fantastic bikes, but they're just a little bit beyond my budget....😁 https://www.brandbuffet.in.th/2025/04/mercedes-amg-f1-electric-bike-launched/
  6. In Alzheimer's & Dementia, Zheng and colleagues published results from a UK-based cohort study of 210,237 participants, suggesting that metformin use reduced dementia risk beyond the level observed in patients with milder diabetes and better health profiles. (Details of study omitted for brevity) Link: First published: 12 April 2025 https://doi.org/10.1002/alz.70147 In conclusion, metformin is a safe, affordable, and widely used anti-T2DM drug, with growing evidence suggesting that its long-term use is associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline. An ongoing 18-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial—the Metformin in Alzheimer's Dementia Prevention study (NCT04098666)—is investigating the protective effects of doses up to 2000 mg/day, with results expected in 2027
  7. Ronnie O'Sullivan made history at the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters by making two maximum breaks in the same match, landing a huge bonus in the process. Snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan has once again proven his prowess on the green baize, scoring a thrilling 147 break at the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters and costing rival Thepchaiya Un-Nooh a hefty sum in bonuses. Not satisfied with just one maximum break, he went on to score another in the same match to nick a sigficant bonus from his rival. The tournament offers a £50,000 prize for a maximum break. Thailand's Un-Nooh was set to pocket the entire amount until 'The Rocket' stepped in, putting him in line for two-thirds of the prize. But the excitement didn't stop there. After doubling up during his victory over Chris Wakelin in Jeddah, O'Sullivan secured an additional £147,000 bonus, bringing his total winnings to over £180,000. https://www.express.co.uk/sport/othersport/2096130/Ronnie-O-Sullivan-147-Saudi-Arabia-Masters
  8. Turin Shroud mystery 'solved' as man claims to know Jesus' blood type The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth believed by many to be the burial shroud of Jesus, with the blood on the cloth thought to be type AB, but one expert is sceptical of the claim Biblical expert Dr Jeremiah Johnston revealed to the Tucker Carlson Network that analysis from the 1990s detected AB blood type on the Shroud, reports the Express. "The Shroud has type AB blood, identified as Semitic, present in only six percent of the population, confirmed as human and male, ruling out animal blood or a hoax," Dr Johnston said. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/shroud-turin-mystery-solved-man-35734749

  10. An urban rewilding group is seeking the public’s views on the potential return of white storks to London as part of a project to see if the birds could make a home in the capital. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/aug/04/rewilding-group-to-assess-possible-return-of-white-storks-to-london?CMP=share_btn_url White storks could once be seen flying in Britain’s skies and building their huge nests on roofs and in trees, but they disappeared centuries ago as a breeding bird as a result of hunting and habitat loss.
  11. It was incredibly humbling when I found out that the foundation wanted to create a memorial in his honour and I was absolutely staggered by the response that the fundraiser had from the public," said Mr Wardell. "It goes to show how many people were touched by Finn's story." When his attacker was only charged with criminal damage, Mr Wardell campaigned for Finn's Law, calling for legal protection for service animals. The legislation was passed in 2019, as the Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Bill Finn recovered from his injuries and continued working briefly, before he retired. He died in 2023 at the age of 14 and the memorial was unveiled on the second anniversary of his death https://bbc.com/news/articles/cev2y20371eo

  15. Is this really true- sounds a bit bonkers to me.😅 https://www.independent.co.uk/news/weird-news/why-are-cats-scared-of-cucumbers-b1818523.html "People have been sharing videos of their cats' extreme reactions to cucumbers. Placing a cucumber behind a cat when it's eating appears to startle them, causing some cats to leap into the air in fright. The trend has spawned a dedicated subReddit called 'CucumbersScaringCats', where users have posted videos of them testing the trick on their own cats." Can any Cat lovers confirm this? There is a handsome young gentleman on the forum- @CatCage 😁who is a cat lover, perhaps he knows?
  16. Thought this was rather endearing.😊 Sallyanne Brooksbank with her Hermann’s tortoise – SWNS A tortoise that had been missing for a month after escaping her garden was found three miles away—having gone on the run at a brisk pace of 0.0041 miles per hour. The Hermann’s tortoise named Matilda managed to scale a zucchini plant to pull off her daring escape and slow getaway in early July. The 10-year-old reptile then managed to negotiate several neighbor’s’ fences, dodge cars while crossing a road, and traverse a stream in the Leicestershire countryside of England. https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/escaped-tortoise-found-3-miles-away-one-month-after-going-on-the-run-at-0-004-mph/
