There is no law stating that you must carry your passport, the law states that you must provide ID with a photo within a ‘reasonable’ time frame, so a DL would be ok

According to the Lawyer of this forum is certainly is.....

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/712871-carrying-original-passport/

That is his opinion, it is not based on LAW, there is no Thai LAW which states that you must carry your passport.

If youre understanding of the question:

"Is it required by Thai law that a foreigner have their original passport on them at all times?

-and the answer to that question:

"Yes this is the case as the police need to verify your identification and current valid visa".

is that there is no such law - I rest my case.....

How can the brownshirts check if you have legal visa or not if you cannot present them your passport?

And they do have the right to do check your id and visa if not at all time so at most occations.

  2. A trip to the doctor couild be a starting point. Doing some tests and some draw some blood to check her nutrious staus, electrolytes, hemoglobinlevel (red blood cells), infection status or whatever the doctor wants. There is something called a "MMS" - "mini-mental-status" that is much used where I am from (Scandinavia) to check persons for dementia, memory loss, brain damage etc. Its a good predictor to see how the brain works and memory-errors especially.

  3. In any western country to accept money for sex will be considered prostitution. But in Thailand this is quite different. In Thailand its generelly not accepted for a girl to have sex with someone she isnt married to, or to have a one night stand, a short term relationship or similar. On the other hand - if the sex is payed for its much more likely accepted than if not. Thats the moral and etichs in Thailand.....

If I read you correctly, then most of the girls we interact with, are indeed prostitutes,

its just that some also have day jobs.

I have no idea to whom you interact with - but if youre paying money to a woman for having sex with you - you can make the maths yourself... ;-)

And if a girl have a daytime job I guess the need taking pay for sex more or less disappears...

The need for money for sex does not dissapear because they have a day job.

the day job is for appearances and family, the hope for advancement and a better future

the night job, is for her, while she is waiting for the above to materialize

as a former NYC and Miami taxi driver, I can assure you of the many women I knew, who I saw at night, and we were both surprised to see each other, but kept their discretion, as usually they were friends, or we were friendly, and more importantly, why lose a paying customer, I didnt care what they were doing

If a woman have a decent paid daytime job - I can see few if any reason to sell sexual services at night.... After all more than 99 % of daytimeworkin woman in western countries doesnt sell sexual services at night. An odd exeption one will find here and there - but still.....

Yes, most Thais would be scandalized by a girl going out and having casual sex for the fun of it, giving it away just because she liked the guys and happened to feel horny.

But if she's making a lot of money at it, or even only a little but "needs" it for whatever reason (don't we all), then many of that group would let her off the hook, it's completely understandable.

And for those explicitly in the sex industry, acclimated to its mores, there's almost nothing more shameful than a girl who gives it away or marries a poor guy for love, she's considered a right blooming idiot.

Personally I can see these ideas as OK, just a different set of standards is all. . .

Thats my point exactly - different set of standards. And I am definetively not judging others - as thais - for this....just accept that this is how it is in Thailand.

Mangkhut, Scarpolo and others. Afraid you are all slightly wrong.

Stop thinking all girls to be prostitutes. And stop being sad over it.

Above all do not mention 'Thai', morals and Ethics when talking about females, males and sex.

Accept one biological fact (I deliberately do not refer to many other factors that may be considered induced or simply result of brainwash).

The biological fact is: both men and women want sex - sometimes, for whatever reasons.

The crucial difference between genders is:

    - men must have an erection;

    - women do not need it.

This biological fact is the basis of all disparities, grudges, conflicts between the genders. Use your imagination or experiences to create all sorts of pictures.

    Don't blame me - I haven't created this situation.

And stop bashing Thais for this. There are plenty of other more valid reasons. wai2.gif

Yeas you are probably correct that both men and women want sex now and then. But for a thai girl that are not married - it is not considered culturally and morally right to have sex - and thus most unmarried thai women will not have casual sex/one night stands etc even though she have sexual desires. You will of course find exceptions from this and times and moral and etichs are changing in Thailand as well as in other countries. But still - the main rule is as above mentioned....

I dont think that all girls are prostitutes, but Thailand has it fair share..... ;-)

  8. As ChrisKC says above here - You have taken two important steps already as you have admitted and realised that you have a drinking problem and secondly you are seeking help for this.

If you dont admit to yourself and realise that you have a problem -- there is no way in the world you can do somethingh about it.

I have been in Your shoes 5-6 years ago - but like most others and like that what they say in AA - you need to hit your personal bottom to realise this. If you dont hit the bottom real bad you wont realise that you have a problem. When I realised that I was an alcoholic and that I needed help - the first major step towards healing and sobriety was taken. Many other steps was needed and much discomfort along the way had to be lived through - but man does it feel great to sober nowadays. I can still go to a bar and socialize with others but I have a coke or a fruitjuice or whatever I want instead of a beer or drink. I dont waste money, braincells, I never wake up with a hangover and blackout and hefty regrets and I save a lot of money as well - but most important - I stay sober!

Alcoholism is a progressive disease that if not cured eventually will end up with death. And probably a terrible death as well.....

There is only one solution to alcoholism - and that is to stop consume alcohol. This process is not easy and it might take a long time also - but it is definitively possible. If youre still drinking - you will first need detoxication. This must be done in a place where they know how to handle this. Dont go to a doctor and "get som pills" as others have said earlier in this thread, Thats is not smart at all - you will need a lot more than a couple of pills.

After detox - you will need some time in a rehab place. And after that you will probably need some treatment for a while and follow up.

Involve all your near and dear ones. GTell them the truth - tell them you need help and understanding, tell them youre on your way to sobriety. Its much easier if you involve your nearest.

Its not uncommon to have a relapse or two during this process - but dont give up - theres always hope.

Where and what institutions that are suitable for you in Thailand I do not know - but you have already got some suggestions in this thread.

Personally I reached the first bottom in the Philippines and the second time in Thailand - but both times I was helped back to my home country and recived help there. For more than two years I wasnt outside my own country during the healing process but after that I have been travelling extencively - and wow how much enjoyment and pleasure I have had in my life after I stopped drinking. You wouldnt belive it!

You have made the first important step - now take the other steps as well. You wont regret it and continuing drinking will lead you only one way. Dont follow that way.

Good Luck With your healing process! And dont give up! Theres always hope!

  9. ooh i did a good one tonight.

asking for fish balls I mistakenly asked for fish footballs

    everyone had a chuckle/

Just have a go, who cares if you stuff it up

Thais are in general very liberal about most things, also mispronounciations of thai words. And most of them seem to appriciate that we try and thus give a little effort in learning (some) their language. And if the wrong pronounciation of a thai word gives them a laugh - you have doubled chances for being liked and respected. (at least if you learn the right pronounciation after a while)

Nobody will learn thai without pronounciating a word or syllable wrong now and then.

You should have seen the faces of two thaiwomen to whom I tried to explain that in my home country there are alot of snow nowadays in thai..... clap2.gif

  10. I think first a guy should get to know the difference between Thai and Loas. "sep ee lee" is Loas for delicious not thai but is uised in Thailand by isaan people and others in northeren thailand. Why would someone speak loas and then tell someone to else to learn to speak thai?

Loas???? I presume you mean Laos.....

"Sep ee lee" is Isaan dialect and Isaan dialect is similar to laotian language but by no means totally the same. In Laos they would say "sep lai lai" or "sep lai doeh" and absolutely not "sep ee lee".

And "sep ee lee" is NOT used by Northern thais - in Northern Thailand they will use the expression "lam tee tee"......when talking about delicious food.

(and in Southern Thailand "aroy djang hoo"....) wink.png

I think it's Lao actually but the French decided a silent 's' was a cracking idea so we all pronounce it just to get our own back.

I wish my Thai was any good but I have to admit it's laziness.

do remember on my second visit here to Isaan the family were all in now brother in law's pick up and noticed that he said 'kap' instead of 'krap'. Apparently it's because people from Isaan have trouble saying 'krap'. I took a while to get my head around that.

Your correct in the term of how the laotians themselves and the thais use the word, Its called "Phatet Lao PDR" or "PDR Lao" when talking about the country and when talking about the Language thais and laotians Call it "phasaa lao". Foreign countries persons call the country Laos and the Language Laos or laotian. I have read several explenations why the "s" was added in the end of the word "Lao" by us foreigners and the one you mentioned might be the right one.

I was using the English/Foreign/farang term "Laos" when I answered Lovelomsak just to not confuse him even more. After all he called the Language "Loas"......whistling.gifwink.png

  11. There is an airport -Patong bus ( for now)

Once ur in Patong rent a motorcycle ( but not from the beach road) 150-200 baht/day

If we had baht bus's like Pattaya and no jet ski's most of the hassles for tourist would end

Rent a motorbike and transport yourself and maybe your travel companion and both your luggage to the airport....... Wow a new genious is born.....whistling.gif

  12. How do you define "eastern Thailand" then?

The Thai meterological deparment define "eastern Thailand" to be these provinces (Chiang wats): Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Sa Kaew, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chantaburi, and Trat. If you have problems seing other farangs in these provinces maybe as others above has suggested an appointment to a optician or eyedoctor would be a good suggestion......

And it could be interesting to hear Your definition of "Eastern Thailand"?

  13. I would like to know this myself. I was travelling in Laos some time ago and I saw several huge advertisment boards along the roads in Laos for on laotian bank (I dont remember which one....) that one was offered an annual interestrate12-13 % if you placed your savings in US dollars in this bank or 8-9 % if you placed ditto in thai baht.....I just have to replace my savings account as can get only 3 % annual interest rate here where Iive.....whistling.gif

  14. If there's one notable difference between the 2 groups it is that Brits go to beer bars and Go Go bars in droves and enjoy a drink and a laugh talking with the girls. With the Russians you almost never see them in beer bars or Go Go bars, why would that be?

Because the russians bring in their own women.

Most russians thats coming to Thailand are families, couples, couples with children etc. Most englishmen are singles coming alone to LOS. Thus you will not find a lot of russians in those places you mentioned. And you will find lots of brits. There are exeptons of course but still......

Anyhow I havent had any problems with neither russians or brits. Communication is still easier with brits....

  15. As others say, its a difficult topic. If I understand the thais right domestic issues and even rough violence is considered - yeas a domestic affaire and not a police matter and nothing a accidental bypasser or neighbour should do something about.

Around 10 years ago I was living with my then thai gf in an amphur village in an Isaan province (my then gf worked for the amphur) and across he street for my gf house there was living a couple without children, in their late 30s. Almost every weekend this guy got pissed drunk and (maybe the woman too, although the other thais in the village said she drank only a little) started up a fight with his woman. Some weekends they kept it going with screeming, physically fighting, load screaming, broken bottles, smashed windows and I often said to my gf that we had to do something about this, call the police or something. But my gf said the police would never come to a domestic fight so that there were no point calling the cops at all.

None of the othwr villagers seemed to react upon this either....

But one weekend it really went out of proportions. Screaming and yelling all through the night, it was so load that it was impossible to sleep in our house and at 5-5.30 in the morning the screams from the woman were so loud that I was 100 % sure he was about to kill her. It was the most desperate screams I have heard in my whole life. NOW! I said to my gf - call the police NOW! He is about to kill her. But no, my gf said this have happend several times before and the cops have been called but they didnt come to the scene.

I went outside our house and over to the neighbour couple, but bottles were thrown through broken windows and I choosed to back off. No other villagers were present. After a while they stoped and the the after the woman moved out (for the 3-4 time in 2 years the villagers said) she was beaten black and blue all over her face and looked terrible. 3-4 days later she moved in again.....

What is right and what is wrong to do isnt always easy. But the brownshirts will keep on collecting their helmet money and their registrationplate broken lightbulb money every month, thats sure...
