A lot of unsold condos generally because foreign quota is full

Sure... But this one is strange as the whole back wings are black, yet the main wing is occupied. And I do not believr in coincidences... I doubt because of foreign quota, rather a regulatory or legal reason of some kind would explain. Just curious.

I'm not sure why.  I think some of the back units have been sold, here and there.  When we lived there we saw air con units on some of the balconies.   We looked at buying one of the floor-thru interior back units.  If I remember, it was very long with a high kitchen window by the back entrance and a set of balcony doors at the front end looking towards the ocean.   The space was large but we thought awkward and the lack of windows was a drawback for us.

Okay... You remember if the price vs the main wing were off in value? Anyway something strange must be behind of the empty wings as for a  developer hard to understand why not sell at market price. Also, wonder how they count or not count towards maintenance fees.

My partner and I owned there a number of years ago.  Good location.  We had a beautiful ocean and shore view from our high floor 48 sqm studio condo, which we divided and made into a junior 1 bedroom.   Limited, reserved garage parking--we rented a space from someone that owned one of the garage spaces and wasn't using it.   Very limited amenities.   No gym, etc.  The pool seemed too small for the number of units but fortunately the whole back of the building was mostly unsold when we were there.   When we hit Pattaya in 2010 there were not that many seaview condo choices and View Talay was one of the big players.  Plenty of choices these days.

Sometimes wondering why the back wings are still empty - do you have any idea?

Must be some regulatory/legal reason as otherwise does not make sense to keep empty for years. Effectively about half of the units in the building not in use, not sure if sold but no lights ever in side wings.

Price of milk is set by the Thai government, it's one of the price controlled products.

If anyone is pricing it above the 95bht government set upper price, they should be reported to the authorities.

I prefer to buy 'Party Dairy' 2l milk from BigC for 83bht.

Talking about milk, some subejectively scientific observations:

I've had the habit of only buying the Meiji milk until couple of weeks ago, purely out of curiosity, thought I would try if any difference between different brands and started to buy different can every time until can not find new ones.

Bought a can of the red-labeled stuff, packed in cylindrical 2L can from BigC -> down to drain after taste. Too 'milky' odd taste to my mouth

Then tried the Foremost rectangular can -> same result, too much of the odd taste.

Next in line the Party Dairy from BigC (indeed 10 bath cheaper for some reason) -> taste identical to Meiji

Then the black-capped stuff in similar shape can with Meiji -> again, no difference to Meiji in my mouth.

Next Thai-Danmark in similar shape blue capped can as Meiji -> same taste with Meiji again.

Still to test at least the Chockchai brand

I only use milk for coffee - but drink A LOT of coffee. Surprised the two odd tasting brands actually make even coffee taste not good to my mouth.

Your next extension would be denied if you did not keep the 800k baht in the bank for 3 months and then 400k baht after that. There have been reports of that happening.

Just to follow up on this one - did my extension the other day, and indeed the IO carefully checked my balance during past 12mo, and after checking said 'you need to be careful not to let the balance to go below the required levels'. Thus, at least in Pattaya immigration they indeed seem to be serious with this requirement.

If you went to Father Rays and a few other similar places you might think differently.

Sure there are places for the less fortunate, however I doubt their numbers will make much of a dent to the broader statistics here, simply due to the Industry volumes.

  7. Conference billboard on Pratamnak hillside... For once there is a conference placed in the right place in Pattaya. I would guess not many cities on the planet where percentage of inseminations out of total completed heterosexual intercourses is lower than here, thus a good reference case for the academics and other specialists in the field

Participants esp from countries with high population growth most likely will try to familiarize themselves with the miraculous environment!

Just a thought - if all the micro-brewers could create a single cooperative maybe their combined volumes under such an umbrella would be sufficient to meet the requirements of the law?

I would guess would be big challenge as the threshold to get started is so high. Very difficult for any small brand to get much volume, especially as the big boys control big volume distribution. For anyone to be able to grow, would need free open market and a lot of time to grow business gradually.

  9. In a country like Thailand (or most of developing Asian countries for that matter) average does not really tell much at all about real income levels - actually the 'average' part of population is likely very small, as very high incomes on top (for small % of population) and very low income on bottom (for large %) arithmetically just averages out somewhere, probably to a number that does not tell much about income distribution at all. Average persons with that measure are few and far in between.

Top that off with substantial percentage of informal income in both ends, let it be corruption income (which is substantial indeed, many times official salary income for quite a few people), prostitution income (which also is substantial for many) etc which is likely not included in official statistics.

Still  many official positions that people fight to get to in some way or another (nepotism often the method) where salary is meaning less - actually people might pay big lumpsum to someone higher up to get the small salary job as the corruption income opportunity that comes with the job is substantial. This was very common also in China when lived there.

My g/f tried also to order on her Thai phone.

When she checked her order, it said she had not ordered anything!

...maybe about time to check amulets of everyone in the household, must have something to do with them...
