  1. Horrible. Why was he face down in bed? Died from smoke?

Have often wondered about burglar bars on windows.

Some people have bars that can swing out and are anchored through the wall with a quick release. It would be nice to have that in your bedroom, at least. The house I am in now had bars on all the windows, put they are only held in place with 1/4 inch screws on the window frame. Now that is not going to stop anyone. Not to mention that you could just kick the wooden (clapboard) door near the handle and gain entrance in a few seconds. I don't know why I never bought a fire extinquisher. In the states I had two all purpose extinquishers. I kept one in the bedroom to fight my way out. You want to get to it fast.

  2. I want to fly back home but am afraid to go to the airport because of the protests................guess I'm stuck!!

What on earth are you afraid of????

Are you going to sit in your hotel room the next few days/weeks?

You are more likely to be hurt in a traffic accident than from the protests. There has been no violence yet.

Edit: I have just seen your profile and it seems that you live in Chiang Mai. What's the problem?

Yes, just don't hang out with the crowds in bangkok, especially if you are wearing a red t-shirt. You will be fine.

  3. Air Asia / or perhaps Bangkok Air can get you up to Udon Thani in an hour. From there, just take a bus for 60 baht to Nong Khai. Can fly back to Bangkok in the afternoon.......but hey.....stop for a beer in Udon or Nong Khai.......... Bangkok sucks now.

I saw deals for Bangkok Air for 500 baht. (1000/r/t/) . I do not know when you are going, but what a happy, quick trip.

  4. It is the birthday of His Gracious Majesty The King on 5th December and am sure it will all come to a stop out of respect.

Well, thats nice. You mean this will stop it forever on 5 December? It is a pretty big barrel rolling downhill. I am sure it may pause for a day....

Good news though! I am waiting for the 24(or more) countries to publish that 5 December will be a nice day for traveling through the streets of Bangkok, because everyone will just all of a sudden pull out and go home.

  5. If you are 100 percent sure it is your child then.....

Either: 1. You feel you need to give your child a chance, and do not want him playing with the water buffalos.

That will cost you....but you need to keep in touch with the child. I believe 9000 baht a good figure.

    (a) You set up the education funding (through college) and obtain passports, etc.

    (B) You set up medical insurance (no, it is not free at all, you will need something)

© You make monthly visits to the school and pickup the child for some kind of relationship.

    2. You just want the problem to go away.........pay a lump sum and have her sign off on it.

    Forget the whole deal.

    3. You just want him to grow rice and ride buffalos... Frankly you know it is your child but don't give a damn

about how he grows up. Then just give a few thousand....up to you !

If there is any doubt at all....about whether the child is yours....pay a smaller lump sum.

In all cases, make a contract.

  6. I would recommend spending A few days il Laos,or other countries around Thailand. It would be good just to get more educated.

I agree. Fly out of here for a few days. Many good deals on flights. Get a Tourist Visa in a different Country every once in a while. At least do a border run to Cambodia to break up the monotony. Next month, we are going to Penang. I think you can only get a single entry visa. Then it would be kosher to go back to Laos for a multi-entry. I have the Philippines on my schedule after that. I take so many trips, that getting a tourist visa is inconvenient. (I feel i need to stay put for two months and use it all).

I could get a Retirement Visa, but even though we rent a home full time, my rent is only 2500 a month. We look for flight deals and good places to fly out to (which we would do regardless of any tourist/retirement visa).

Many ways to skin a cat........

  7. Funny this...

    1. Cross into Laos and pay 35 usd (about 1300 baht)

    2. Buy a single entry visa for one entry (1000 baht) yes..you can buy 2 entry for 2000 but lets say one.

    3. You need a room overnight to pickup the visa in vientiane the next day (700 baht)

    4. Transportation to The Consulate twice and from and to the Border (Vientiane side).. (300 baht)

    3. Get your extension for 30 days (1900 baht)

Thats 5200 baht for 90 days.

Or just get a 30 day border crossing (visa exempt) for 1300 baht and do it 3 times. Good for me, I drive 45 minutes to the border. Total about 3900 plus some gas.

Interesting. But I would not do back to back border run too often...The fourth time, get a double entry.

Feel free to correct my math. This of course is only if you live fairly close to Nong Khai.

  8. Do not do what I did. Hardly ever got to see my son, although I paid monthly. At first, I was giving too much money (20,000). That is more than a teacher with a college education makes. 9000 seems to be a good honest figure. You are not responsible for the mom, or any other kid...only morally responsible for your own. I assume she would live in a home with or without your child, you are not responsible for her rent.

Medical Insurance per month.....1000 (I don't really know)

    Food per month...........................4000 per month

Clothing.........................................1000 (dam_n good wardrobe after a year..but they grow fast)

Education (eventually)..................2000 (not a private school of course up to you)

College fund.................................1000 per month for 18 years would pay most college fees (keep that away from her)

I might have missed something.....from time to time gifts, dentists etc.

There seems to be gossip going around that foreign embassies force give free money to farang babies....not true.

She might figure out a way to turn you in on a fraud hotline for getting tax breaks and/or extra social security money which could get you audited. She could do this through a friend who is Thai, but has citizenship in your country. In the USA there is a fraud hotline. For example...if you claim (USA) the child is living with you when that is not the case....

That is probably not going to happen. They will not want to get involved here.

You are a right mug (or a very generous father).

3k a month from the court, if you were married to the mother.

Health care is free for children in Thailand (not even 30bht).

School is free in Thailand (Junior school even provide free dinners).

Love the, medical insurance and college fund bits, whats with the education 2,000 baht per month?

Books, papers, fees, transportation (50 baht a day), lunch money to carry around (50 baht a day).

    Why would that surprise you?

  10. I think my point has been missed. I am not suggesting that all dogs wear collars I am merely suggesting that since the dog did have a form of collar that it probably was owned by someone and that should have been investigated.

My second point has also been missed, I am not suggesting that UK rules have any relevance legally, but from a moral view point my conscience would be clear since I consider the UK system to be fair.

    SDM

Ok. But I do not see that any enforcement is going to happen, other than in some farang outclaves/subdivisions, and tourist hangouts. Might take 10 or more years for UK rules (and USA rules) to be adopted here.

Simply cannot pick and choose a dog at random for vehicular execution, collar or not. You might find a big crowd of people bashing in you car windows and dragging you out by the throat. Much worse that the dog bite. Cultural difference...and yes..you will definitely pay (lucky if its only money).

  11. None of the dogs in my avatar wear collars. They all have shots and are the friendliest dogs in the world. Pedigree dogs are inbred....faulty gene pool. Bred for a few "show" characteristics. My dogs are not pedigree...and would swim 5 miles behind my boat to catch me. Always wait for me on the beach when I blow the whistle, and the brown one sits on the bow and sniffs the salt air. Ignorant people call them soi dogs, because they are mixed. Once they meet them, they get the shock of their lives...loyal and friendly.

  12. Did the dog have a collar round its neck?

what does a collar have to do with it? Very few dogs have collars on my soi. Does not mean you can kill them.

If the dog has a collar it means it has an owner, the name and address and phone number are usually engraved on a plate.

No collar means the dogs can be taken away by authorities, yes it does happen if you bother going to your local khet to report aggressive dogs.

Yes the police also know this, as do most Thais.

If this dog had no collar it basically means it had no owner, or was just a soi dog the woman in question chose to feed, doesnt mean it was her dog.

When you say, Very few dogs have collars on my soi. are you talking about soi dogs?

Your logic simply does not apply. There is nothing here in Thailand of the sort. People own dogs, pedigree or not. Applying the rules you learned in you home country to Thailand is not going to work. There is no enforcement of collars and licensing. Soi dogs ....you are attempting to classify every dog without a collar as having no owner. Nor is any dog required to be tied or fenced. Maybe in some communites they have requirements (subdivisions, etc where they can control things). But on any village street I defy you to count collars and then try to kill anything without a collars.
