  1. This is not a "Ghandi" like protest, these are the same thugs who took over the airport a few years ago sad.png They have already taken over government buildings, assulted foreign journalists who tried to report on their actions, and are in the process of taking control of the Thai television network. Ms. Shinawatra has been very patient with these hooligans thus far, with the feeling that if you give a rabid dog enough rope they will eventually hang themself, and Mr. Suthep is currently wrapping that rope around his neck. These infantile yellow shirt radicals have been allowed the right to assemble and protest for 2 days now and they have finally crossed the line like we all knew they would, it is now time to end this situation before Thailand gets another black eye like the airport debaclewai.gif

    VERY WELL SAID clap2.gif

Does positing in all caps make you louder?annoyed.gif

  2. This is going around the Thai social media websites now. Even was reported in the Bangkok Post the other day. Hard to argue with when even the finance minister admits to telling porkies.

Sorry, my British, Australian, NZ, S.African English is no up to date.

Perhaps someone could replace the term "porkies" to something more internationally standard, as in North American English?

    Thxkbye.

North American English is hardly internationally standard. It is a uniquely self-absorbed sub-dialect of real English. <deleted> you can't even spell.

Wrong. Most non-native people of the world speak more like Americans than Brits. Own up.

Try explaining difference between "I quite like it" and "I quite like it" to non-native speaker.... At least Americans can pronounce foreign names somewhat as should be, such as Hunta for Junta, not like BBC reader who said Junta.... US English is international standard. And we say "derby" with "er" not "ar" sound.

Time for those Brit Porkies to hone up their speaking skills. I can't understand a work either. Sounds like Korean.

  4. Better to err on the side of caution, but it does seem like the situation is escalating. Maybe time for a trip outside of Thailand for a while.

45 minutes from the Laos Border... Staying put in Udon, but my gal is flying into Bangkok in 6 days (Don Mueang). She had her tickets since last month. I sure am worried about traffic..but she is staying close to Don Mueang. Prison visit for a relative. Flies in at 10am and leaves by 5pm.

Should we cancel ???? It is a twice a year deal where she gets to hug her daughter in the prison.

  5. Is the validity the same for letters from all countries?

    Yes

But I would never get one that early unless you were at your embassy or consulate and you have made a long trip to get there already. Things can change in 6 months.

Thanks -- I'll try it when I go next time and I'll report back. It means that someone can get a conversion to O *and* their first extension 3 months later -- all with the same letter of income. smile.png

Just because the validity of the letter is 6 months doesn't mean that the immigration office that you are dealing with will accept a letter issued that far in advance. You are always at the mercy of the officer that you are dealing with and the rules that have been put in place by his superiors. As an example, most offices accept the letter without backup, but some don't. I always get mine just before my renewal just to avoid any problems and have backup with me just in case but have never had to provide it.

Point taken: As I have mentioned somewhere else in here, my immigration officer wanted to see the original of my governments letter to me saying I was on a pension, but he wasn't interested in anything to backup the income letter. I did have bank statements, etc in my bag ready, just in case. wink.png

One general point when dealing with immigration (and other) officials is that in my experience they generally want only what is laid down in their rules -- nothing more. Overloading them is very unhelpful. Better he has to ask you for what he wants and you produce it fom your bag without having to dash off to the copier/photographer/whatever. In other words - go well prepared. smile.png

Always keep a few aces tucked away, excellent point. That goes with almost everything you deal with.

  6. Madame PM.

The message is loud and clear.

The opposition tried to debate in the house and your bulldogs wouldn't let them.

Your members cheated in the house with their voting

They tried to wipe out an astronomical number of convictions benefiting you and your family

You allowed democracy to fail - you were a large part of it's failure

Now The people are fed up with your family being in politics

Now The people are fed up with your family being in politics

    Thanks for the comedy.

The next general election will see you off to Manila

    Hope not

Manila sure doesn't need more problems.....

  7. It will be an income affidavit that you do at the embassy. The rule is that they can be up to 6 months old and still be accepted.

Can do with outreach. Did it last year in Udon.
True but only if it is within 6 months of when you make your application.

Last year many offices were wanting it within 30 days.

Rule was changed to 15 days then after US embassy got involved it was changed officially to 6 months earlier this year.

I see.......last year mine expired within 30 days, I was unable to get everything done. No sweat next time...and glad they changed it to six months. Retirement pay does not usually go down....so I don't see why they ever put the 30 then 15 day limit. Made it quite difficult. Happy it has been sorted out.

It would be great if they would just finally admit that most Retirees contribute so much to the Economy...especially up here in Udon (where cash flow for property/housing is necessary for the economy) by putting there cash in the banks and having their wives by land for themselves. Glad I got a place to rest my head....

Perhaps we can one day just get some kind of deferral from the Immigration Red Tape.

Just a bunch of rich old buffalos trying to settle down...

  8. Florida Hotel is pretty convenient and I got a kick out of opening my window and watching people get on and off the skytrain. It is near the major intersection of Siam...I think one or two stations off.

Rooms are old, old. But it has a pool and you get right on the skytrain without walking. Good enough for me. Also, has an inexpensive restaurant next door.

Price was about 1000 baht..maybe less. The room had what I needed for a night...table, comfortable chairs, internet (I think), cable, bed was ok, hot water, good air con....but like I said...its old. Many better ones for a bit more. Just convenient for the night.

did i mention it had a pool....that was ok

  10. My Hulu streams without stutter, but when I have a problem elsewhere, I just download the video (takes a few minutes) and then I watch it. Stream for what? Download first if you can. Some sites, such as Hulu, make it difficult to download. Try some alternative sites. Also use proxies when available. Chrome and Firefox have add ons that let you view some sites that may be blocked.

First try "Internet download Manager" (Not expensive)....it can download faster than your browser does by itself. Also try a download manager... such as Download Helper for firefox.

Sometimes streaming is slow because that Website's server is flooded with simultaneous connections....that is not something you can control. In that case, a faster connection helps.

90 percent of my time, I am just reading/writing on forums, or emails. Have no need for super fast connections. I often write offline when I have my laptop with me and have no connection. When I get home, I go online and just cut and paste.

Same with reading email...I have a multi-clipboard....such as Ditto.....and I just copy quickly all my emails and read them/write back later.

Well, doing these things is quite effective, and I just use basic 3bb wifi.

  11. Koh Phayam.....and some beaches on the other side of the pond...Koh Chang in Trat is nice. I like the fresh air of both. Seems like the Lush vegetation and ocean air in Koh Chang (Trat) is just full of oxygen. Lots of beaches with variety....some quiet, and then White Beach (fun with outdoor BBQ and some nightlife)

  12. Lao visa fee varies by country. For many it is 1500 baht or $35. You get a 30 day entry.

$36 dollars for me, two days ago. I might have got fleeced for a buck, Bring crisp new bills. I forgot the cost in Cambodia.

Trat is very cheap from the bus station, but I came through the border from Cambodia (flew in and think I paid for a visa..)

The cost of the bus to the border is not worth mentioning.... probably 50 to 100 baht. You could get a sontaew for a bit more, or even a van from one of the guest houses. I liked the one German guest house on the river in Trat.... Riesling...I think. Nice family run guesthouse with plenty of sitting room downstairs. Nice, quiet town with a few hangouts to sip a beer and relax. Nothing special, but a good nights sleep for a very good price.

Was it late or a weekend when you got your Lao visa. They charge extra for overtime.

    Yes..Saturday. I suppose thats why.

  13. There are requirements, and you have to prepare. Please read the post with the link to Philippine Immigration rules. Do not be surprised of anything in the Philippines..... bribery is a way of life, my buddy just puts a few twenties in the passport when he arrives there and asks fro a Balikbayan stamp. Girls exiting alone is not going to be simply a matter of having a passport. Many citizens if other countries are free to come and go without any other requirements, but this is not so in the Philippines. Overseas workers, Mafia/Trafficking agencies, lack of documentation (sometimes their names are spelled wrong on their birth certificates, and lawyers overcharge to fix this. Sometimes I wonder if the municipal halls get kickbacks.). I spent 15 years there and six years with Filipinas working in Japan. It is just big business sending girls overseas. Many do not come back, and many many many are staying in Japan now with no passports, working in small karaokes, living in dormitories.
