  1. Just doing a prolonged test with various smaller and larger air-con units. The trick is to go as small as possible. We are cooling a 48-sqm room under the roof comfortably to 26/27 degrees these days with a humidity of less than 40%, sometimes down to 34% with a 12'000 BTU unit and could have actually gone for a 9000 BTU.

Setting of fan on lowest position. The trick is to have a small unit run all/most of the time, never really reaching the turn-off temperature, therefore continuously dehumidifying. The cost of electric is about the same with a too small unit vs. a large unit that cuts out all the time, and hast to start-up again or even less.

We learned this from an Indian Engineer who stated that all units in the Thai hotels seem to be oversized and wear and tear is bigger due to stop/start action.

We have just replaced a powerful 20'000 BTU unit and replaced with the 12'000 inverter, which actually tunes down to 4'000 BTU. Perfect!

  2. Went through cancer/chemo treatment with 2 friends (lung and prostate). Both have died since. Both times ended up in http://www.bangkokhospital.com/wattanosoth/, which is much better suited with qualified doctors. A few years back they had only part-time cancer ward in BPH, with "travelling" doctors, who were nice enough but clearly not informed on newest treatment options.

Also cost in both cases got VERY high.
Anyway, if it is not a standard, proven chemo, i would fly to Australia, USA or Europe. These days you can verify so much on the internet and will realize very quickly if their treatment protocol is up to date. Good luck. PF.

  3. The main cause of smoking being allowed in Pattaya go-go bars is that the bar owner/manager is a smoker himself. Because he has a constant craving for a nicotine hit, he believes that his customers feel the same way.

It's his job to stay inside the premises to keep a close eye on the business, therefore, for him to walk outside for his nicotine hit, is far too much trouble and not worth doing. It wouldn't be fair if he smoked inside and his minority smoking customers were forced to walk outside for their hit, so he puts out the ashtrays and to hell with the NO SMOKING regulations....and to hell with non-smoking customers too.

He has probably been smoking for most of his life so he doesn't know how a room full of tobacco smoke can spoil the atmosphere for the majority of his customers and his staff.

If the NO SMOKING law applies to the premises that he owns/manages, he has no right to overrule the regulations. In that regard, non-smoking customers should voice their objections to him, loud and clear, before exciting the premises. If his business starts to go downhill as a result of having a room full of empty seats, he just might start to get the message.

I'd like to see the owners/managers of those few go-go bars that enforce the NO SMOKING regulations put a sign to that effect outside their premises. I'm confident that their business would thrive as a result.

    +1

  4. Fully agreed. Disgusting habit and most of the smokers are disrespectful and feel they have the right to contaminate everybody around them. Same in hotel pools, coughing and spitting with their smokers cough. Disgusting!!!!bah.gif Most of the times I change tables or I leave. Unfortunately we live in place where laws are not enforced and is frequented by mostly people who are not educated enough to respect laws and their fellows next table. Try Walking Street Pub! Great smell from the entrance to the inside. And not to forget Sugar..Sugar on LK Metro. Both Non-Smoking! Any others out there???

  6. Hi there;

Looking for a contractor who could take care of a few small change/repair jobs in my new condo on relative short notice:

    - replacing granite countertop in bathroom and fit new sink

    - install water heater & new taps

    - fit some drywall, paint & fix skirting board

    - install exhaust fan in bathroom

    - some small concrete work, extension of a couple of balcony side walls

    - remove door/hinges

I am, aware smaller jobs like this carry a premium and I am happy to pay well for a good job.

I am grateful if anybody could point me to the right Thai or Foreign company.

    Thank you. P.F.

  7. Plenty in Walking Street.Just talk with the many touts and make sure to pay as you order. Have not heard many horror stories as it used to be in Bangkok. But certainly not a cultural event I would like t o see....:-) I guess with the many Tourist Police around they can not really afford to rip-off people too badly. PF.

  8. Now, now. Your ignorance and arrogance are showing.

Dialects naturally occur when communities of language speakers are separated or overlap (sometimes called "rub against each other" in linguistics). The dominant (most powerful) region's dialect almost always becomes the official "language" as such. That is why English contains so many words with French origins as well as two words for the same/similar things. The ruling French-speaking Norman rulers used the French word for cow meat -- beef, which they ate, while the English-speaking peasants/serfs/slaves spoke "Anglo-Saxon" and used the Germanic word -- cow, which they raised but rarely ate. Over hundreds of years the Norman rulers became anglicized as well as the power shifted and what we call English today became the dominant and official language.

As the British empire expanded, English-speaking communities were spread around the world. These communities were separated by great distances and so naturally developed their own dialects with the differences becoming more pronounced with the decline and almost complete collapse of the British empire. As it declined, the USA, left largely unscathed by WW II, rose to dominance. With its rise in power came much greater use of American English. Now the UK, as a member state in the EU, has its dialect largely used in European business, especially since English is the lingua franca of the EU.

"Now, now. Your ignorance and arrogance are showing".

So using Wickileaks or something similar makes you clever does it??

Go on, tell me you never plagiarised this from another source and these words are purely on account of your expertise on the subjectclap2.gif.

If I am wrong on this, remind me never to arrange to meet you in a pub for a nights stimulating conversation!!!w00t.gif.

clap2.gifcheesy.gif Finally a TV-member with a sense of humor and intelligence end common sense behind it. Why do mostly posts on the Pattaya Forum immediately turn into the negative. Much more so than any other regions?? PF.

  9. Hi Tech Freaks - Planning my new home and would love to include in my technical specs a central network computer/media-center? that stores my movies, music etc., which then my friends on the pool, my kids in their rooms, my wife in the kitchen and myself in my office can access wirelessly via their devices and ultimately can play on their ipods, TV's, computers etc. Could several people actually pull their individual movies at the same time? Or listen to misc. music? Is this possible for a reasonable cost? Any experts that could explain a simple setup in simple words. i would like to stream it via my 4 access points which I will set-up on my property and in my house. Thank you wai2.gif much.

  10. The shop opposite the new public hospital in Soi Baukhao will most likely supply/install them but are not 100% sure.

Anybody else having knowledge of this?

Yes, this is the best place in town. Rudi, owner is great guy. Got one installed and is perfect. PF. Mai Thai Bike Shop

  11. According to eezergood:

Best Pizza in Patong - La Capannina, he makes his own mozzarealla! No i dont work in this place & yes I know the owner as I have been there so many times smile.png

Check the pinned restaurants link at the top of the Phuket Forum page. I found this on page 28.

    THX.

  12. Sorry but you are in Thailand now .Try some thai food.

Not the fat food from the good ole USA

LOL! Like fried rice noodles, fried chicken, sticky rice and fried most everything else that Thais eat isn't fattening? Slow cooked, smoked ribs are pretty good. I make them every couple of weeks. They take at least three hours. I can't stand parboiled ribs!

+ 1 / 5555..... and every dish is sugared and full of MSG...and they using the cheapest oils and use it forever....

  13. Not in Patong, but worth the trip IMO, the best ribs are still at what is left of Don's cafe which is Moo's Tex Mex on Soi SaiYuan, at the bend.

I have been to Moo's Tex Mex several times, and the ribs are ok and not too expensive, but it you want to eat nice ribs in Patong, I would prefer Sizzler, I saw their sign at the beach road not so far from Bangla Road. They also have some nice ribs at a irish pub named Scruffy Murphy's in Bangla Road (and serve it with coleslaw), but I like the ribs steamed before grilled, so I prefer Sizzler.

Thanks to everybody! The Phuket forum is so much nicer and less aggressive than the Pattaya one. Never realized til I started reading up. PF.

Thanks Starkey - Not just now in Thailand, but 20 some years and figured I might see if there is a better choice of these 2 items while in Phuket for a few weeks. The Thai food I had around Patong so far was terrible, as I have no insider knowledge in this location yet.wai2.gif PF.

  15. Thank you everybody for taking the time. You saved us a big disappointment. We hit the beaches instead. Any tips for a beach suitable for some snorkeling? What a great thing Thaivisa.com and its members. THX.wai2.gif
