When I read of Westerners going 'missing' in Thailand two thoughts cross my mind.

Killed (perhaps accidentally while on some road at night), then their body carted off to be dumped somewhere due to the local considering it the best option.

By all accounts he was steaming drunk and refused a lift back in a car, but chose to ride home after a day/night of heavy drinking at the bikeshow.

Minivans every 20 minutes to every suburb. Buses, endless taxis, etc.

The problem is that the roads are so full of single passenger cars that they take too long to get there.

Maybe for the well off but getting to places with a taxi everyday especially isn't exactly affordable for everyone. You could say there are songtheaws and minivans during the day, but past a certain hour, taxis would be your only option.

Minivans go from about 4am until about midnight.

So don't tell mates that they're being robbed and cheated and a lot worse is probably about to happen.

I know a middle-aged Thai teacher who lives in a section of the school with another teacher, they both work there 6 days a week, earn less than12k p/m, they both have cars.

I suppose most are not in a great rush to get home anyway as the car is likely parked outside a 2000b p/m shack. Compare that to blocking up the roads sitting alone in your car and the feeling of face and importance. No contest really.

I can also use the crossing at Savanakhet so maybe they will accept an e-visa.

Only if Cambodia invades and conquers Laos before you get there mate.

If you have a Cambodian E-Visa you can use it at only the following two border-crossings with Thailand:

Cham Yeam (Koh Kong)

Poi Pet (Banteay Meanchey)

Once in Cambodia you can leave at any border-srossing, ie, you don't have to leave the same one you entered from.

There are not many countries where bad things don't happen. Why would Thailand be any different?
