  1. I'm 23 and have been living on the southern islands for 6 months. It would be nice to meet a girl that I can be with for awhile, but all the young farang tourists always leave in a week or so and like EVERY young thai girl i meet obviously has an agenda. I'm a pretty normal decent looking fun guy but I don't think that really matters to most of the thai girls I've met here.

It would be nice to meet some Thais that speak good english and I could hang out with normally + maybe find a girl to be with (personally I just can't be with a girl longterm when I know "money is #1".) Just about every thai "friend" (male or female) I've had has ended up pulling some kinda shit/started asking me to "loan" them money/drug problems/sleeps with a new guy ever few days to try and find a husband to support the kid she had at 17..etc..(I'm sure u guys know). Guess I'm just looking for help before I get too jaded.

I love the beach but it seems every nice island draws many farong which draws a lot of the kind of thais I don't like.

any suggestions? Good beaches or places live in thailand?

    -Ski

Somebody must have explained this by now, 3 pages after all.

    Didn't bother to read it.

    Islands are small communities.

Join a sport club of your liking, gym, University, language school, get a job somewhere..etc..

Observe the situation for 6-12 months, get to know people, arrange dates....

My god, is this the LOEM, land of easy marriages. WHAT A ######

You can always go to Internet, easy alternative. And I'm not talking about THAI VISA.

If interested short time, do I need to bother..

I have estimated the posters IQ average here way below 70.

  2. The stalkers yes, I almost forgot to complain about them. You're lucky if you get only one.

But, compared to Scandinavian department stores where the sales people are hiding behind the counters, few looking very busy, it's a thing it self to find service.

Good or bad? Just different, what can you do?

Restaurants, this happens a lot, no matter the price range, they just can't deliver appetizers before the main course, especially when there are many in the party. And over prised bills, I'd estimate over 50%.

  3. Yes, MM. I never dreamed there was shoplifting in Thailand; very naieve of me. Several months after our Tesco opened, I went to buy a 15kg bag of dog food. On entry, the guard asked my to check my mid-sized handbag before shopping. No, thank you. That's when they instituted the grocery check and bill stamping at the exit. Just never dawned on me that people would pilfer goods.

Almost every shop here in Canuckland has a security alarm gate. I cannot go shopping if I have public library materials in my bag as they set off all the alarms. Very embarrassing. Service isn't always that much better here, either.

There are alarm gates at every Tesco, BigC etc. in Bangkok. And do them beep a lot. Usually there's no security around, very rarely I see beepers get checked, and only on superficial level with cart full of goods. Happened to me actually this week, beep, beep, I didn't react in anyway just continued pushing my cart, no-one came to stop me. I think it usually happens when the sales stuff screwup again and forget to remove the alarm things from the bottles etc.

  4. I believe Thailand is one of the most service oriented countries in the world.

I agree. But can they do it, 90% NO. They are trying hard YES.

Thats what you get when you hire uneducated people with no motivation/low salaries.

This is the whole concept of supermarkets with cheap products.

But when you go Central it's almost same, unknowledgeable, some times lazy, and I would say mostly stupid people trying to serve you with full effort. But getting it almost always wrong.

  5. Yeah, Tescos are classic. I went there to get a table lamp, they had 20 almost identical models except on that stood out and I wanted to buy it. Unfortunately they had no boxes left of this particular model. Saw one of the workers near buy and asked if they got any more in the stock, immediate answer no. Not bothering to check it. I asked if I buy this dusty display lamp would I get any warranty for it. She wouldn't understand and went back to arrange her shelf. I went back to her and asked could she get some who can speak english since it was complicated with my thai. She said no. I then asked that is it true that there are no english speaking staff at the whole Lotus. She said it's true. I started to complain pretty rudely that you really don't want to sell things, this is a shop right... etc. She then left to get someone cos I continued to bothering her. After few minutes here comes nice thai gentleman with almost perfect english skills. Anyway he wouldnt give me any warranties nor discount for the display one, and told me to buy another model. Then I asked if this model is finished, why it's on display. He couldn't answer. I then asked will you be getting more of the particular model later perhaps. And the answer was yes, come back next week. The guy would have never told me this IF I hadn't asked.

I also hate it when I go buy my favorite gin and the helpful sales girl tells me no that no good, buy this instead.

  6. Is it just me but often I have received "posted on the topic" e-mails very late.

Like this one was send caused by post today, but the browser started of the post #10, 7th of June. Which I had not read before. So sometimes there's a huge (1 month) lag on the e-mailing thing, or the forum's servers just somehow mis it? It would be nice to get notification on time :o (Immediately). What could be the problem?

  7. I counldn't vote here since there didn't seem to be a reasonable option. But I haven't had a problem where I live, and only a small problem sometimes on beaches, usually in other countries, not Thailand, which was solved by picking up some rocks and pretending to throw them, or pretending to pick up some rocks. Or even when I wasn't on a beach, but on a road, just turning around suddenly when being followed, and yelling a little, ready to swing my bag but not needing to. Basically trying to pretend I was the dominant dog. Try it sometime, I know some of you do it in the bars!

What would you see to be a reasonable option then, MTW?

  8. Well I have all rights and a good reason to live here.

:o We all have rights, Sonnyboy, and some have a good reason. So do the soi dogs. Quit complaining is all I'm saying. Ooh, I should write a song. You just sound like a whiner to me.

You seem to have completely missed my point. Development. In how many Asian countries you can see packs of dogs roaming the streets?

I'd really like to know how much you rent per month, guess you spend over 100,000 THB per month total, so therefore have isolated yourself from this problem and joint the permille of the luxury Thai population. Then question arises, why are you taking part of this conversation if it does not concern you.

  9. I really don't understand the term 'stray farang', to me it equals a backpacker or just a tourist.

If one would be lurking 'round my shady soi at night I would probably use the same method as with dogs (holding at least some weighty piece of wood). The communication part would be much easier though, likes what you bout here or fancy a beer...

What your test's statistics show Bendix is that this is no place for future stats experiments.

I don't even know what we re talking here.

  10. Gerald (The Traveling Soi Dog) is apallled by the number of votes to shoot/cook or harm his beloved brethren. Gerald (The Traveling Soi Dog) has spoken to his evil twin brother Norman (pictured below) to sort you out.

He knows who you are and he knows where you live.

    post-4252-1182930336_thumb.jpg

    And he's on his way.

Tell Norman & Gerald I'm sorry if I have offended their feelings. They surely do have name tags hanging around their necks.

What I'm surprised is about 50% of 35 votes since don't mind them at all.

And only I am ready for BBQ, guess I should ask Thais if there could be a market there.

  11. One thing I love about Thailand is "mai pen rai". Now all these farang come here with their f* pen rai attitudes. You want western standards, you know where to go.

How original of you Jet. :o

Well I have all rights and a good reason to live here.

    You like status-quo, yea?

What are your views on politics here?

Have you ever heard that things can Develope, billion mai pen rais won't achive that.

  12. Ralph Lauren not available in Thailand, I think they don't manufacture in Asia?

Lacoste has/had a wholesale in BKK on Rama IV, think it was TV channel 3 building.

My Thai & Singapore bought Lacostes are great but not as great as Europe made ones.

  13. Personally I think this isn't a bad idea.....

The Atigaro Project is a capture-neuter-release scheme

    http://www.thaiwave.com/atigaro/

    Couldn't agree more with JCCR6.

Many people love to complain about the soi dogs, but don't do more than that.

One thing that can be done in solving this problem is helping out the many dog rescue organisations that Thailand has with their spay/neutering programs. In that way the dog population won't increase.

It doesn't need much effort, just write out a check or go to the bank (when you are there already for some other business) and send them a (good) donation.

Do they commonly sterilize male or females or both? I would guess male sterilization would lover the amount of aggression while we are waiting them to get extinct by civilized manner. No blood or guts spilled.

Other option I forgot, how many have eaten dog meat, not bad taste at all actually.

I understand that it would be against the law to kill a dog at least in BKK. Anyway the ownership issue would rise up naturally.

  14. Strays need to be rounded up and then euthenized. At a minimum, they need to be sterilized so they don't reproduce.

The difficulty with dogs is that they really can't survive without people. They are dependent on us and we need to control their numbers and make their lives as comfortable as reasonably possible.

Sterilization I forgot from the options, would make sense.

Guess it will go with the kennel option as it requires relocation and more expensive than a bullet, wooden club or iron bar.
