  1. As I recall it was Orient Thai had bought the 747 that crashed on its last flight with China Airways ( CI 611).

That can't be right, that flight was a complete hull loss, it crashed into the Taiwan strait between Taiwan and Hong Kong in 2002, didn't it? No way that aircraft could have been repaired and probably only a fraction of the aircraft fuselage would have even been recovered.

UNLESS you mean the flight that dropped thousands of metres/feet over the Pacific Ocean en-route from Taiwan to Los Angeles, that had to make an emergency landing in San Fran? That aircraft had part of it's tail ripped off but was otherwise intact.

Sorry I could have just checked the flight numbers to confirm which flight it was, but too lazy. So just wondering.

Orient Thai has never purchased any 747 that was ever flown by China Airlines. http://www.airfleets.net/flottecie/Orient%20Thai%20Airlines.htm shows you all of the aircraft they have ever owned.

The incident aircraft over the Pacific that is mentioned with the emergency ladning at SFO is this aircraft http://www.747sp.com/production-list/22805-564/

Orient Thai had bought the aircraft, but it had not been taken out of service with China Airlines yet.

  2. I believe they also have a deal ferrying united nations troop around. Legacy from connections with air america.. .

How on earth do you get from "connections with Air America" to getting a contract with United Nations...? blink.png

The reason K. Udom still has these contracts dates back to the time when he operated Kampuchea Airlines with his L1011 TriStars and was getting IOM/OIM contracts under Cambodia's United Nations preferred nation status. He's had UN contracts on and off close to 20 years, but it's nothing to do with "Air America".

    For reference, here is one of his birds with the logo on the side;

    0415622.jpg

(This one is taken in Tucson, AZ. It's heading for the scrap yard, the engines have already been removed.)

  3. Someone told me once that 777-200 can fly up vertical if it's has no passengers or cargo so powerful are the two engines. Don't know if its ever been done, Boeing might have done it during testing? Aviation myth?

It is quite powerful but not that powerful.

B777-200; empty weight about 300,000 lbs, thrust up to 2x 100,000 lbs.

B777-300ER; thrust 2x 115,000 lbs, but empty weight 370,000 lbs.

  4. It amazes me how many here are quick to post on a thread, but clearly haven't read the previous posts. An early post explained this event fully +well, almost fully).

    1) stop talking about stalls. There was no stall, the pilots descended deliberately. Read on.

    2) there was no engine failure per se, just a fault with an engine bleed.

    3) the descent did not cause the nosebleeds, the decompression event did. Duhhhh...

    4) the pilots followed SOP in descending rapidly to a breathable altitude. Clearly the rest of the crew were unaware of this SOP.

    5) the most pertinent question is why one engine fault (not failure) led to a loss of pressure. The frightening implication is that the other bleed was not operating at the time.

But please, read before you post. Forget engine failure, forget stalls. Neither are relevant to this thread....That is if you have read page one....

And to the pilots (real not armchair) who didn't work this out instantly...shame on you. The clue was nosebleeds. Should immediately shout decompression to you. That is, if the picture of the masks deployed didn't give it away! Maybe you are not as smart as you thought.....

100% correct and to the point. Nothing to add, nothing to correct.

  5. I read an article on Yahoo Finance earlier this week, regarding the exchange rate between the US$ and the Euro. The article said that projections are that the Dollar and the Euro will be at par by the latter part of 2015. Of course, since I read the article, the Euro has dropped from 1.09 to the dollar, to 1.05 today. It went further to project a bottom of .82 Euros to the dollar within 2 years. This is due to both Draghi's project QE and the pending interest rate increases in the US. How this will effect the exchange rate to the Thai Baht remains to be seen.

Parity in the second half of the year? Looks like it's gonna get thereabouts in the second half of this month! Euro lost about a percent of it's value [against USD] just Friday afternoon, and there's been the same kind of closing time panic for last three weeks. Markets have zero confidence European recovery. Note: I say 'thereabouts' as breaking the parity is also a psychological barrier and there may be some "resistance" at 1 to 1. Not taking a guess on how far it will plunge as markets seem to be shifting into full-blown panic mode and as falling falling Euro may seriously dampen US recovery. Wait and see.

That's what I figured. You'll read it the way you like. "ECU was a currency" (Yes, it wasn't), but Euro wasn't a currency until paper money was introduced (??!). I won $100 on a personal bet back then against a banker on the Euro when it was introduced as an accounting/banking currency, and I won another 100 Euro bet against the dollar from the same guy when cash Euro notes were introduced. I can remember the numbers and the timeline quite well as I lived through that era in a European country. I know when my salary statements appeared in Euro, and I know when I got my hands on the first Euro notes. The Brits sat on the fence for a long time and never followed through, so the sequence of events may not be clear in your mind. I really wish you would have read that wiki. But even if you didn't your bullheaded ignorance gave me a laugh or two. Thread closed on my behalf. clap2.gif

    Cheers.

  7. Yes, it didn't. It started at 1.17 as a banking currency, dipped down to 0.83, recovered after Euro notes were introduced, and went up as high as 1.60.

Mr Y, read your own post.

In the line just above, you say that the euro started at 1.17 as a banking currency.

I corrected you by stating that the euro was never a banking currency - the ECU was, but the ECU had a different composition than the Euro, so they can not be compared.

So the euro did not start at 1.17.

    Clear now?

    As mud. facepalm.gif

  8. Posts containing aberrant misspelling of politicians names have been removed. A post containing a link to a site that specializes in conspiratorial nonsense has been removed as well.

Well done. While that article properly covered infectious disease, biblical predictions, plague, famine, and infectious disease, it completely omitted to mention meteorites, mega-tsunamis, and nuclear holocaust. And Godzilla. crazy.gif.pagespeed.ce.dzDUUqYcHZL4v7J7m

  9. The euro did not start as a banking currency, maybe you confuse Euro and Ecu. Ecu and Euro had different compositions, off hand I remember f ex that the pound was in the Ecu mix.

ECU; An accounting unit, not a currency. (Included Pound Sterling.)

Euro; An accounting currency that started at the exact value at which ECU was a minute before Euro was introduced.

Your "fact checking" is... Never mind... facepalm.gif

I do not understand your reply, as you seem to confirm my post, but end with criticizing my fact checking?

"I don't understand" seems to be the theme, but I would not expect anything less from someone with your avatar. For an anarchist, to provoke is the goal, the means thereto and making sense are irrelevant.

Clarification to other readers: the numbers were fact-checked, ECU was not a currency, and is not to be confused with Euro, even though Euro got it's initial valuation from ECU. For more, Google.

    Cheers.

  11. ^MrY, great to see a Maserai fan here. I owned and restored to perfect a 1963 Maserati 3500GT (Maser's first great Gran Turismo). It was a beauty, and fun to drive.

    thumbsup.gif

I sure sure wouldn't mind a Mexico, or a Khamsin, or a Bora, or a Merak, or, or ,or, but none of them were to be found in Thailand that time [or now], and I'm a sucker for underdogs. After almost 10 years of having an old Biturbo (there, I said it) as a daily driver, I just laugh off it's bad reputation. But I do have my sights on an Espada now. (Hint; It's not a Maserati.)

  12. The euro started as 0,90 dollar (when it was created), and went up to 1,30, now down to about 1,12 --- the future?????

Only speculators like currency fluctuations, for most people and businesses it is an annoyance.

  13. I don't take myself seriously but I do answer questions seriously when they're asked, was your answer not serious? It should have been. BTW not that my sex life is any of your business, but I get laid plenty, probably more then most here but thanks for your concern anyway

face it mate. This ain't FLA ...it's LOS. Meaning : Chicks here don't dig tans. Ever seen a regular Bangkok gal (insert SG, KL, HK gal at your leisure) not hiding from the sun at every chance?

I will concede to you on matters concerning driving / even fixing cars - but bear with me on this one - 20+ years of visiting / living here I have seen a few things - some even by chance.

Failing that, I suggest you open a car dealership here selling only convertibles and let me know when you passed the 12 month mark of staying in business.

Well, I have a convertible and my 'chick' happens to dig it. She likes the shock effect of people seeing a woman driving a sports car and says people give way and behave nicer in traffic "face to face". She goes sunblock on and top down. The roof is for rain and Bangkok traffic, my Bangkok Girl says.

And; No, she didn't even know I had it until long after we got together.

    Cheers.

will keep an eye for you and when i see you will wave smile.png

Well then, better know what to look for and be quick to wave! It's a black-on-black Maserati Spyder from the time long before Ferrari ever got involved. Most likely to be sighted in north Bangkok on the Ladprao-Donmuang-Rangsit axis(, but you won't catch a sight of it until end of month as we are visiting the Dark Continent where I work). Think Zagato and Alejandro De Tomaso. It's the one that you reportedly have to hire a mechanic for (,and I practically did for two years to remove all the 'Thainess' installed by the previous owner. He pulled out Toyota, Ford, Volvo, Fiat, etc. parts to no end.) Been running beautiful now for the last 5 years. Life starts at 4000 rpm. cool.png.pagespeed.ce.jz1nB6CMOIVslCCv-1

Note: If you do see it in traffic in this time, it's probably being pussy-footed around by my mechanic. When I'm out of country, I take it to the shop for a combination of service and "long term parking". I leave it with a full tank and pick it up with a quarter remaining. These beasts need to run.

  14. i believe that the Euro will soon (6-12 months) be as low as an US Dollar and that the Thai baht will remain strong for as long as this government stays in power.

I think the Euro has been around 0.85 to the US$ in past times, so maybe a return is in the cards.

  16. Meanwhile, back to topic.

What has surprised me in Thailand is the bitterness of expats on this forum.

MAkes you wonder why they continue to stay in Thailand

Is there ANY thread on TV that does not eventually include this comment?
    Try the GPS section?

Nah, it'll probably be: "Put your GPS on E and get the F out of Thailand". tongue.png

(The original is from New York Air Traffic Control to a general aviation aircraft failing to follow instructions.

"Put your compass on E and get the F out of my airspace.")

  17. what has surprised me over the years is the number of completely dysfunctional foreigners who are living in the country,

yeah everywhere I have worked in "foreign" countries, you get the odd 1 or 2 nut jobs who have arrived on a banana boat, but Thailand must the be the regional hub for "broken"/disturbed/dysfunctional foreigners. there many who should be in padded cells for their own protection.

and then we have the another demographic of those who have have never traveled outside their own country until the prospect of a cheap available women grew too strong for them and they up root themselves and transplant themselves to Nakon Nowhere shacked up with some bint, with splayed toes and a trick pelvis who gave them the goo goo eyes and promised to love them long time and they are absolutely clueless

Where exactly do you meet these completely dysfunctional foreigners, and what are you doing in those places?

Dear boy, one only has to open ones eyes in many public places in the major population centers in the country, to see this.

unless of course you live in Nakom Nowhere per the second demographic and you would be forgiven for not seeing this

    BOY????????? You call me BOY????????

Are you suggesting that I am from Africa?

    <deleted>

I have lived in BKK, Bangsaen and Chanthaburi, but obviously never frequented the places where you hang around.

Greetings from Africa. No-one is mistaking your for an African, and you certainly aren't black, so how do you manage to get "insulted" by such simple use of the word? And who uses 'boy' anymore?
