A Filipino motorcyclist died yesterday morning after running over a palm kernel and losing control of his motorcycle, crashing into a traffic sign on Thep Krasattri Road in Phuket.

Officers from the Thalang Police Station and rescuers from the Kuson Dham Phuket Foundation were alerted to the fatal motorcycle accident on the Thep Krasattri Road at about 6.40am yesterday, May 27.

They rushed to investigate the scene and found a damaged motorcycle, a grey Honda Click 150i in the middle of the road. About 50 metres away from the vehicle, officers discovered the lifeless body of the Filipino motorcyclist, 38 year old Cruz Jericho Merlin.

Merlin was lying face down in a pool of blood with a major wound to his head. The wound was severe and left his brain exposed. His body was transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy.

Police conducted further investigation into the cause of the accident and anticipated that Merlin might ride the motorcycle at high speed before running over a palm kernel on the road and losing control of the vehicle.

Merlin then hardly hit a traffic sign on a traffic island leading to a fatal injury to his head. The palm kernel with traces of being run over was found at the scene.

This incident has sparked public outrage, with many Thai netizens demanding the removal of palm trees from the traffic island. They argue that the trees pose a safety risk to motorists, citing this as not the first accident involving the plants.

Earlier this month, a Filipina was injured when a palm tree fell on her car during a thunderstorm on the same road. The Filipina driver sustained an injury to her head but the severity of the wound was not disclosed.

A Thai woman shared her near-fatal experience of running over a palm kernel, highlighting the danger posed by the fallen fruit. Netizens are calling on authorities to prioritise the safety of motorists over decorative landscaping.

"An extra 200 baht per panel" says it all.

They illegally modified a restaurant into a nightclub. I highly doubt they were looking at doing a quality job of it.

I suspect it was their plan all along - as there is already a large "Mountain" bar/bistro next door to where this place was (one of those places with a high, open, corrugated tin sheet roof).
The new "restaurant" appears to have been specifically built to be a low, enclosed roof kind of building. The kind you can use air-conditioners in because you aren't cooling a huge open, empty ceiling space.

And once they got their "restaurant" license, they probably went straight into turning the place into a nightclub.

Google maps shows the "restaurant" was under construction in Feb 2022 and the news articles say the nightclub had only been open a couple of months so it's not like they started a restaurant and weren't getting any business so they made the switch to become a nightclub.

They knew they couldn't get a license for a nightclub due to the area they were in. So they pretended they were a restaurant instead.

Hence the use of the soundproofing panels, to try and keep the noise down so it wouldn't be as obvious from the outside. The bar/bistro next door seems to be a busy spot so a large number of vehicles around there wouldn't attract any "official" attention as it could be assumed they were customers at the two restaurants.

I'm curious though, does the "flame resistant" soundproofing do a better job (at soundproofing) than the "inflammable" soundproofing ? One would assume that the more expensive option would do a better job but the extra expense may be due to the inflammable materials used and not from being a better sound reducing option.

And this isn't the first place to burn down due to the material used. Last year (Aug 2021) there was a place right next to the Courthouse in Jomtien that burned down. The Fairy Sweet Village restaurant. 2nd time in less than a year that it had caught on fire actually (the first time being in Sept 2020).
From the news article about that fire:
"I turned on a switch before there was a bang and a fire broke out, spreading quickly across the roof of the building due to foam material used.”

In that case, the foam material was mostly used for decoration, not soundproofing. Probably not even "flame resistant" foam.

The Material that was used should be renamed 'VoompNapalm'

    Hang on a second here...

Last few times I've filled up my 2012 Isuzu pickup truck, the gas tank gauge has been very slow to show the tank is full. The first time it happened the gauge showed full after 5-10 minutes, but the second time, it didn't show full until the next day. :w00t:

Pump attendant at gas station I have frequented for many years told me it was not an uncommon problem and that it happened more frequently during very hot weather.

You found  pump jockey who speaks falang?

curious says.....the following is what we were examined on way back in the mists of time...if there has been updates on this please post them.

The Earth's axis is tilted 23.5 degrees from the plane of its orbit around the sun. But this tilt changes during a cycle , The tilt of the axis varies between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees. Because this tilt changes, the seasons as we know them become exaggerated

The tilt has little effect on the amount of heat received from the sun. The distance would be a major variable, - if it was.

I was a teacher & one of my main goals was getting students to ask questions. Teachers here hate questions because they have no idea what the answer may be and are insecure in their ignorance.

My job was not to be "the answer man"... I might say "That is a darn good question. I don't know the answer. Hmmm. How can we figure out the answer?" Asking questions and finding answers on your own is what education is about, in large part.

    But not here

    <deleted> are teachers for?

  7. 20 years ago - in the back of a song taew, on Sukhumvit, cruising towards Sattahip - suddenly driver braked very hard, & partner & I hit back of the cab hard, hard enough to cause bruising. Driver stopped, got out and apologised profusely.

A motorbike in the left lane suddenly crossed the whole road when he saw the U turn ahead - it was all the song taew driver could do to avoid the bike, & not make him (presumably on gender) into minced moron - like OP.

If you are in a song taew, sit close behind the cab, if possible.
