  1. These prices quoted on this thread for new homes in Issan are double what you would pay in the US. In the US you get a large lot, real roads and civil amenities. Plus in the US the average family income is at least double that of Thailand. So I simply don't believe any of the bullshit I read here. Thai families in Issan don't buy out 500 unit subdivisions of 10 m baht houses. Somebody is playing games. Remember the speculation of 1997, and all the unfinished buildings and subdivisions left behind. They are still visible all over Thailand. I fear that after reading this blog, we a drawing closer to that happening again. Be careful what you buy.

But wouldn't you have to live in the US for those new homes ? facepalm.gif

  2. For examples of double pricing - look no further than not no great britain's passport office - nearly double the price to get new passport from Thailand compared to uk

    What a great example.

    Same in Spain too.

The official explanation is that Consulates have to be self supporting.

Probably explains the outrageous prices for any documentation at the Brit Embassy Consular Section in BKK.

The consulates or embassies have no part to play in it now. We send documentation to Hong Kong, they send it to uk & it is processed and returned to you from the uk - after they have fleeced you of an extra £70 odd - barstewards

  3. Well, either you have not been looking or (much more likely) have no idea what you are looking for.

The four spices most often used in Indian cooking are available in the main market in every decent sized town in Thailand, even in such cultural backwaters as Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen!

Most of the others that you might need are usually available in Makro, though, admittedly, not always of the best quality.

The trick is to buy them when you see them and store them properly.

The only spice I have ever found difficult to find here is decent cardamom.

If Thai markets are too much of a challenge, then Tesco, Tops and Rimping supermarkets have most things as well.

OK - I do not know what I am looking for - you are obviously so clever that you can work my mind.

I can locate most thingsin Mackro etc but was trawling around the english sites & wondered if Thailand had anything similar - not a difficult question for most people & hence the thread

  4. AFAIK, you will 100% need your passport (and possibly proof of address) to comply with anti money-laundering laws.

The sending party isn't responsible for verifying your ID, but the receiving bank/institution most definitely is.

    So it's nothing personal.

    They just want ot v

If you're going to to do cross-continent transfers even between your own accounts, you'd be well advised to call paypal or whoever you use,

before you make the transaction. I'd email before calling as well, so they can see you're physically in another jurisdiction.

Have you ever tried calling paypal - there a joke and last time I called from Thailand, I had to call Singapore. I would find another way personally

  5. I have rented many times in Patong with copy of passport, rates were the same.

What happens if renter declares some fake damage on return & will not give passport back, just as you are going to airport to catch plane back to your country ??

  6. You should never give passport for renting motorbike - there are plenty places that will take copy at same price - you only have yourself to blame IMO

Yes i know but many place for rent motorbike, want only passport not copy

Tell them to get lost - there are also a lot that will take a photocopy. People do not understand how important a passport can be over here in times of trouble. General Rule of thumb - NEVER RELEASE YOU PASSPORT TO ANY THIRD PARTY - why do people always want to learn the hard way ?
