  1. There are a zillion factors. How old are you? married, kids, debt, parents, work, etc...........some people can't do the cubicle for 100-years, some can. some like organized chaos. some like to be different. some like to escape. some like change, most hate it. the normal progression is school, work, marriage, kids, house, and then retire. some here likely go to school, work, travel, get bored at work, work, travel, and end up in Thailand. Other factors are the economy and health. Sure, greece and italy and spain might be better, but not right now. they are disasters. and for me, a westerner, i want VERY different....not just a little different. sure, should have picked Africa or India or even Myanmar, but i guess i didn't want it that different. my family sold their home, my home growing up. i've lived in 10 different cities......my gut tells me where i like to live and who i want to be friends with.

And what, like Thailand isn't a "disaster" right now?

Strange question. Of course Thailand isn't a "disaster". It may have a few problems, but nothing it hasn't faced before and overcome.

Perhaps they could make credit less easy to obtain, so people didn't get into debt, but mostly the place is the same as 20 years ago, but with new cars and buildings. Roads are better though, but too many cars on them.

An unstable political system that has seen two or three military coups in the last decade (I've lost count) that is currently ruled by a military junta, restrictions on speech, assembly, and the press that are the hallmark of military governments, massive droughts throughout the country, an economy that has hit the skids, with agricultural crop prices from rice to rubber at decade long lows, exports down sharply, and a tourism sector that's floundering. Massive social, educational, and income inequities; as you mentioned, massive private consumer debt levels as well has rising public sector debt. A capitol city that was looted and burned by civil unrest only a couple years ago. Massive environmental degradation of beaches and forests; scandalous labour conditions, akin to slavery, in the ocean fishing industry, and human-trafficing and summegling rings when trade in human misery and death. Other that this, however, everything's fine...even the roads.
  2. This is what happens when you plan your life without sufficient funds. This post should be titled "Can't afford to go home...even to visit."

Sometimes plans don't work out. Life isn't that simple.
More likely it was a "blue-sky" plan to begin with.
  3. Big C Extra has a nice selection of European breads, Best in Naklua has a good selection of German breads, French rolls and baguettes, as well as pita breads. Au Bon Pain does a nice whole wheat and multigrain loaves, and even the local Farmhouse breads available at "7" and elsewhere now does a thick slice whole wheat and 12-Grain loaves, which are nice for sandwiches.

Is this something new from the usual sponge bread they sell?

    Haven't seen it anywhere.

Its been around for a while, Foodland, "Seven," and anywhere that stocks Farmhouse breads gets some loaves of these as well. It's not up to artisenal bread standards but for grilled cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches it fits the bill.

I guess this is the one you have in mind?

Haven't seen it anywhere, and I frequently buy the regular whole wheat from farmhouse from Big C extra or foodland. Will have a look for it

    All at Foodland this morning.

  5. If you're in the Pattaya area, I have a good relationship with a nursing home that has some foreigners who might enjoy a visit. PM to me for more info.

As to the WP issue, I would liken it to visiting people in prison. There are people who do this and I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for that.

  6. I don't have a question but compared to other places I don't regard the embassy in Phnom Penh as being an easy place to get a Visa. Firstly the attitude of the staff there is dreadful. And it's the only place I have ever been asked to provide a copy of a bank statement to get of tourist Visa.

I'm not discounting your experience... just saying it hasn't been mine. I've gotten maybe a dozen tourist visas over the past decade from PP (always through agents) and never had to provide anything but my passport. The last was maybe 9 months ago so if your experience was more recent than that, the requirements may have changed.

  7. Holy cr@p. What was I thinking: Foodland in Tukcom? It was TOPS in Tukcom!

    Isn't Tukcom coming to Foodland?smile.png

No, Harbor Mall is being built next to foodland.

Even better! We need another decent shopping mall.

With the new Loaf Cafe and Bakery in Welcome Street, the au Bon Pain at Index, and the likely Starbucks

and other nosherys at this Harbor thingy, there soon won't be much need for us Farsiders to go beyond Foodland anymore.

  8. Not harsh. Just stating facts when compared to other nearby locations. No need for an agent at any of them and some do not allow them.

PP is the same but can use them for convenience if you w

want. PP also has nice air con waiting room. I thought I read somewhere in Vientiane people have to wait in line outside in the sun.

In any case, Vientiane and Phnom Penh are both pretty easy for tourist visas.

have you ever gone through the experience of applying for a tourist Visa yourself in Phnom Penh? If so please tell why you think it was easy?

Maybe only a dozen times over a decade so not much experience really. I've posted "how to's" before for both tourist and non-immigrant O's for retirement purposes. You can search under my user name if you want to read them.

If you have a specific question post or pm it to me and I'll answer if I can.

  9. Importtax for Tesla in Thailand is 80%. According to the country list this is the highest in the world!

Malaysia charges 200% import duty for non-ASEAN CBU passenger cars. Less for Vans, 4WD's and commercial vehicles though.

In the case of the Model X, I guess it would depend on how they class it.

Wonder how they decide on tax as one of the parameters is engine size. What if it has no engine. smile.png

There is a YT video of a guy and a Tesla MS at a showroom in Bangkok...believe it was imported from HKG and was about 2x the Stateside price.
  10. Stupid doors. They'd never open anywhere outside the US as the parking bays are too narrow.

Based on the video demonstration of the doors opening successfully in a restricted parking area you're wrong.

I'd be more concerned with restricted overhead environments. They have sensors in the doors for this but why all the extra complication to solve a problem that doesn't really exist. Standard door openings would have even fine and brought the cost down a bit.

  12. I would assume it's because maybe applications from this office have to be approved in Bangkok. Isn't that stamp what all the marriage extensions get because they have to be approved in Bangkok? Allow the applicant to stay in country during the interregnum.

Application for a marriage extension at Kap Choeng Immigration or any of the other Division 4 immigration office are approved in Nakhon Ratchasima aka Korat not Bangkok.

    So the mystery deepens.
