  1. I bought 3 kids from my girls family one of those 10 baht glass bottles of coke each. We were on one of the beautiful beaches looking out accross the crystal clear water.

They finished the cokes and then threw the bottles into the water, to see who could throw the further!!??

I was speechless, got them to retrieve the bottles and clean up some other sh!t.

Its beyond me how they have zero respect for their beautiful country.

Why cant they see that acts like that are worse than p!ssing on a temple?

  2. Ive driven in many parts of the world. And have had to adapt to the different "styles" of driving wherever i have been. What is an acceptable manouver or gesture is ok in one country but in another could get you shot.

I would like to see some of these Thais drive in an Arab country. If they pulled out expecting the Arab to brake and give way as they do here, The Arab would simply ram them off the road in his Land Cruiser.

What happend to the OP is wrong and extreme.

It happens all over the world, its not just Thailand.

  3. Its simple in my view. Men are just sperm donors and financial providers. In many girls minds we have no other purpose in life.

The Western girl is motivated to use the systems available that having a child brings.

Those systems are not available to Thai women.

Basically the Thai man cant afford to support himself. never mind a family.

The Western man is the cash cow.

  4. Who hasnt seen the movie or play Oliver Twist ?

    Its not a new idea.

You know it was a book, right? Little known author called Dickens?

Well at least someone has read/ seen it!

I used to enjoy the musical on TV every christmas.

My point is, the exploitation of children as beggars and theives has gone on for years, but has got worse.

  5. Depending on what months you plan to be in Thailand you might want to think about rainy season weather. Phuket has a long rainy season (March to October, not heavy for the entire time) and Samui a shorter rainy season (October to early January). Some years not quite those months, but that is the historical pattern. Both are pretty developed and expensive fo.r Thailand, but lots to do and easy to find Western comforts compared to. some of the sleepy but cheaper places.

  6. Samui is hopelessly expensive, Phuket not much better. Both tourist traps full of annoying russian and aussie tourists.

Id go elsewhere if i was you

Your definition of hopelessly expensive and mine appear to be at odds.

A two bedroomed, detached bungalow, two aircon, large lounge, laundry room, buig Western style kitchen along with a huge walled in garden also with its own well and 10 MB internet at 5000 a month ? wub.png It was also a few minutes from Lippa Noi beach and 5 minutes from Nathon centre Just what do you call cheap if that x expensive ?[/quotde]fh

  7. Its hot and humid and the kids are bored.

Go to the markets, the kids of the vendors are usually asleep too in the heat.

And they probably don't get adequate sleep at night, especially if they are used as a prop in tourist areas like Walking Street in Pattaya.

Can't see why anyone profiting from a begging child would bother with the expense of drugging him/her. Keep him/her out on the street 20 hours a day and s/he's going to want to try to get some sleep. If the child is crying, so much the better for getting money from people distressed at seeing the kid unhappy/hungry/sick.

I wouldn't put too much credence in what some of the old dears on Thai Visa have spouted in this thread, Most of their "information" is of the urban legend sort that originates after drinking several cups of special "fortified" afternoon tea.

Wait a minute. You actually believe all these beggars are real, and not run by the mafia ??

Wow words fail me. You need to get out more. Ok let me help you out a bit.

This couple pretending to be blind were knocking out 100,000 baht a month. You think

the mafia is going to let that kind of money slip by their fingers??

The real tragedy is the fact a lot of the beggar kids were bought from Cambodia and

Burma. Not really sure why the mafia does that, perhaps buying Thai kids is more

expensive, or the penalty for being caught is less if you have non Thai prop kids.....

Anyway a sickening business. As somebody noted buy them a meal or walk away.

Every baht you give to enrich the owners of these kids is just making a slave of

    another kid in the future...

Well at least the begging mafia here does not blind people and cut off limbs like they

do in India. At least I hope so....

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/530749-thai-couple-poses-as-blind-beggars-earn-over-bt100000-a-month/

    Very true and so sad.

In India they (Mafia) Break the babies arm. You give more to help a baby with a broken arm.

  8. Ive been coming and going from Thailand for a while and my girl has been with me to other countries too.

If you love eachother and want to make it work you can.

To be apart for more than 3 months we found it hard.

But it also has advantages. When we do have a break and get back together we go crazy for eachother.

Also i like some time to myself.

Get your Skype or whatever you use set up on your big screen TV. I do that with family back home too. Its like they are here with you. Well almost.

Good night mate, you sound like you need a rest.

  13. Its thainess.

Just wait until the fib hurts you personally either financially or personally.

You won't love thainess quite so much then. It is one of Thailand's biggest problems. Tourists can ignore it, for me as a long stayer it was what made me leave in the end.

    Lies, lies, too many lies.

sounds like they solved a problem

If I was the problem, well.

If people you have had in your home can quite so willfully be liberal with the truth of something that effects your children, after knowing them closely for 10 years so be it.

I am quite lucky with my wife. After knowing her for nearly 15 years, she has understood that thainess stops at our doorstep. Saving face to feel better now has a terrible cost in the end.

She won't speak to that couple ever again. Its not I who is the problem it is the idea that failing.or doing wrong personally is something that has to be denied and ignored.

How can anyone trust anyone as a friend if the entire premise that they will lie to make themselves look better. About anything.

Ergo, true friends are few and far between and be very careful who you trust in Thailand.

well, i suggest you re-evaluate your own behaviour because I and most of my friends have been here far longer than you without these "problems". i suggest you google : quotes by pogo.

Saving face does not breed trust. Once trust is lost it is very difficult to regain. Especially if the person continues to "save face".

Its a sure way to destruction. But is it going to change? No.

With this obsticle, its no suprise that Thailand is a nation unblemished by achievement.

It is a concern that if Thais do not face up to mistakes and failings do they never learn and just repeat over and over. I can see how you would want to leave if that was the case in your relationships.

  15. Im learning to adapt to the Thai culture too, but the lateness thing i already got used too when living in the Arab countries. They could be anything from 10 min to 1hour late, and saw that as the norm. I was always ontime, just took my laptop and did some work while i was waiting for them.

I didnt care too much after a while as they were paying me.

But thats one of the reasons every project gets delayed.

Same here. But no point in stressing out over it.

  16. Ive been in Thailand for several Months now and have been coming here since 1998.

I really love the country and its people but one thing i have still failed to get my head around is the Thai custom of saving face.

For example, i have seen people blatantly lie and continue to lie even when found out!

It frustrates the hell out of me sometimes. I guess i need to learn how to handle it.

    Any suggestions?

What a bunch of ignorant nonsense some people are posting. People who claim to have been here for years and to "know" Thai culture. They should be ashamed, but they're not.

Anyway, MonkeyLoo, read up on the difference between a "guilt culture" and a "shame culture."

    It will explain everything.

    Thanks for the entry

I read some interesting articles on the guilt and shame cultures.

    http://www.doceo.co.uk/background/shame_guilt.htm

That link offers a good grounding.

Although i have been coming to Thailand for a while on short visits. Living here and doing business has thrown up new challenges. So gaining a better understanding of the culture is the first step in learning how best to succeed.

Im not trying to change anything just better understand.

As i have said, i do love Thailand and its people. Why else are we all here...

  17. Soutpeel is a respected member of this community and doesn't deserve the vile comments being shoveled at him by you and your buddy callaway. I can certainly ask what rock you crawled out from, but frankly, I really don't care.

It seems that you old guys have lost the capacity to mount a logical argument and resort to making personal attacks without backing up your comments with any form of reason, facts, or logic. A classic case of this is above in the quote where I asked Berkshire to advise me the basis of his personal attack. So far he has not bothered to clarify for me why he feels I am wrong or out of step. Nor in fact have you. You have resorted to accusing me of being vile for making a comment about Soutpeel who made a vile personal attack on the OP. At least Callaway and I have been man enough to justify our comments with a reasoned argument. You old guys seem incapable of anything more than slanging shit at people which is a typical response of people who know they are wrong and have no reasonable basis for what they said. If dumping shit on people is what it takes to gain respect in this forum then that is a sad state of affairs.

First of all, I'm probably younger than you. So your rant against "old guys" is not only irrelevant, but rather uncalled for. And what does age have to do with anything?

As for your suggestion of a "reasoned argument"....you are freakin delusional. There was nothing reasoned or rational about anything you or callaway had to say. It was basically crappola nonsense, similar to what the OP had to say. If you can just admit that you have no idea what you're talking about, then perhaps we can all move on.

    @Berkshire

    Where did i speak nonsense?

I posted the question to gain a better understanding of the Thai saving face issue. If i understood i wouldnt have the need to ask.

I hope the post has allowed some members to gain a better insight.

Most of us have better things to do than argue on here so I will leave you to it.

    Its been interesting. Thanks all.

  18. But Thailand is the very best place to live in the whole world.

Thanks again for all the advice and ideas.

I love it here in Thailand. We just need to accept the saving face episodes, take a deep breath and try to have a laugh.

As you guys say, it aint going to change.
