Some great information there thanks everyone for sharing.
From what i have seen Nong Khai has a lot going for it. Ive rented a nice 3 bed house with a garden for just 4000 per month, There are some really good markets, fresh fruit and veg grown beside the river, Golf, fishing and cycling. Many many temples. Udon Thani just 50 mins drive, Vientiane just across the river.
Some decent bars and eating places.
I can see how people would say it can get boring, but its what you make it i guess, like anywhere.
If i can get something going here it will do for me.
I see many people from Laos coming across. I wonder what they are all here buying?

Koh Phangan. I stayed a month in a beach hut last year and it was perfect I wish I had longer.
I just hired a bike and rode around the island looking at places to stay. Don't take the first place you find. There are many. Mine was a beach hut, just a room with bathroom, small kitchen and balcony with a hammock. Cost me 8000 for the month.
The island has many great beaches, waterfalls and nature. Just stay away from the full moon party areas at haad rin.

Alright then.........
WHEN???Also, I don't know how it will affect Nong Khai but does anyone know when the rail link from China to Singapore will be complete?
The small (98 Sq meter) land I saw on the river and quite central was priced at 7 million baht.
Over priced for sure but it could be a sign.
You do mean "if" don't you?
Decades mate, decades. If ever. . .

Who said I was putting up a few $100,000 ?
I was just looking for ideas for business in Nong Khai, perhaps people have noticed a gap in the market or have had ideas or experiences in Nong Khai that they could share.
I have many friends with businesses in Thailand. They are not their main source of income. It's done by many as a pastime and way of socialising.

Correct - I'm happy doing the small amount of sugar cane on my wife's existing land, but as I say I don't like the idea of buying more land that i don't own myself. Besides that i would prefer a more social activity such as a guest house.
As I say it's not all about money. If I wanted to get rich I doubt I would be in Thailand anyway.
As the saying goes "if you want to make a small fortune in Thailand, start off with a large one ".

I looked at some land overlooking the river and fairly central. Ideal for a guest house but they were asking 7 million baht for less than 1 rai !!
Ideally I would like to just lease one if the right one comes up.
I've not read the Lonely Planet book for years. I remember it being popular with backpackers etc. I just use the Internet now and sites like TripAdvisor. I can do the Internet marketing side myself, that's been a part of my job for many years. And sure, the Lonely Planet is huge.

Thanks for the advice Bannork and all who have given some positive thought and ideas.
We did harvest some sugar cane this year from my wife's land. She only has a few rai. You are right it is easy money but I don't like the idea of buying land I can't own.
I like the guest house idea. It's just about getting the right location.
Choochoo.....If that's how you are in person go get some therapy mate.

Choo choo
You need to ask yourself one question.
Would you speak to people face to face the way you talk to them here?
If the answer is yes. It begs the question....do you have a straight nose?
You are one prize c***.!
Congrats!

seriously sir. does op sound capable? for buddhas sake, his idea of business is his wife cooks edible meals. Is the best idea you got a run of the mill Guesthouse?
Er.. yes. Some GHs make money you know...
Simon
Owner/builder of:
Phuket Airport Hotel
Phuket Airport Overnight Hotel
Phuket FLY Guesthouse
Phuket 24/7 Hotel
Phuket Airport B&B
Ao Nang VIP Hotel
Phuket Airport VIP Guesthouse
Just saying....
2nd serious-ness....lol.. why do so many say they want to make enough bahts just to get by. Can you forcast profit to 8000 baht a month. Seems a good way to guaranttee lose your investment.
just going by income metric one would need to at least clear a teechers salary-one would think.
Hell- a million usa dollars would get you @ 2% interest . withdraw that and $10,000 of principal would last you forever and a legacy to boot.
ps it aint that hard to accumulate 1m$ in usa if you understood basic finance and started saving n investing right out of skool!
Choochoo
You make many assumptions.
Perhaps like other considering the same have already made money in the western world and just want a semi retirement without getting rich but more as a pastime and social activity.
If it pays the way all well and good.
A guest house would be an ideal semi retirement. And yes my wife cooks fantastic food and really enjoys cooking. So what is the issue in using those skills in a guest house. I would say quality catering is an important factor.
Cheers for your input

Some constructive replies thanks for those.
I'm not looking to get rich here just get by. I'm not the sort to just sit around doing nothing.
I think the guest house with visa run service is a good one if I can get the location.
My wife is a great cook and could take care of that side of things easy.

Hi All
I've recently moved to Nong Khai with my wife. We chose here as it has a good feeling about it and we felt it is not too busy and also not too quiet. As well as not being too close but not too far from her family ;-))
I was just looking for some feedback from anyone who is doing or has done the same and any suggestions on business opportunities here.
Thanks
ML

In Scotland last Summer I payed 6.80 for fish and chips!!
(340 baht)
Best place in the UK for ''Fish and Chips'' for sure...., further north, even better..
Did you wash it down with ''Barrs Iron Bru'' ???.... another regional treasure...
No i couldnt afford an iron bru!
It was a nice fish supper in Ullapool but pricey.
I can feel a new "fish and chip" thread coming on.....

Idiots indeed.
I was advised that if the car was purchased on HP it couldnt be in my name as i didnt have a work permit.
I dont know how true that is.
I just paid cash in full ensuring it was in my name.
Cars here seem to hold their value if looked after. Unlike the Western world where they depreciate a massive amount as soon as you drive away from the show room.

I didnt have a residency certificate. They still sold me the car with just a copy of my passport and visa, and Thailand address.
-
I just bought a truck from Toyota Chiang Mai. No problem at all with a tourist visa. But they did insist on an address in Thailand, as it needs to be registered there.

She will experience some racism for sure.
Try to put yourself in her position and think what you would need in her circumstances. You can get most things in UK to make her feel at home you just need to find the sources. When I took my Thai girl to the UK she was much happier when she could get her favourite foods and had made some Thai friends.
If you have to keep her hidden away and controlled then that should tell you something.

Why take credit and leave yourself at the mercy of the banks?
If you have done so then just leave it unpaid. Who cares about the corrupt banks anyway?
Nong Khai as a place to settle. Good Idea ?
