1. Excellent idea lol! Please be generous 'cos my nerves are shattered.... Amazingly, the motorbike shop were able to get my bike running again and only charged 70,000 kip ($3.50), which was the same price as the doss-house that I stayed in last night. Yesterday I managed to fall off 3 times because of the state of the road (I've been riding motorbikes for more than 40 years, and this was one of the worst roads that I've ridden on). Happily today I only fell off once and now I'm in Kasi in the valley, just near Vang Vieng!
2. This IS the new (upgraded) road! Trucks just ignore the sign saying 'not suitable for trucks' and use it anyway, hence the accident ..
3. So there I was, slowly riding my motorcycle over the mountains between luang prabang and vang vieng. I was riding uphill behind a truck when a truck came fast down the hill (brakes failed). The truck in front of me ran partly off the road and fell over. I had no choice but to drive off the road and l and my bike slid down the incline. Luckily I was okay but my old motorcycle is probably not ok! It's in a repair shop in a mountain village (probably with a terminal diagnosis) and I'm stuck here also until the trucks are removed. Happy to be alive lol!
4. I've been mostly living in Laos for the past few years (with some short breaks in the UK, Thailand and Myanmar). I will start to receive my UK state pension next June (25) and that alone is quite adequate to live on, (including eating out daily and expat medical insurance...) I have a couple of months to kill before a planned final in-class job in Myanmar. So from Monday, I'm off on my motorbike to tour around Laos and to find a retirement bolthole. My current rented property in Luang Prabang is more than adequate, but I want to find a rural house atop a hill with a 100x100 meter garden for my radio antennas!
5. I think some are under the assumption that private medical insurance will cover the cost of care and/or medication for pre-existing conditions. Why on earth should it?! That would not be a logical business model for the insurance companies. They provide insurance for new illnesses or for accidents that are not caused by the pre-existing conditions. Therefore, if you have the misfortune to have some pre-existing conditions, then you may find that the insurance company will cover very little in your case. (Think of high blood pressure, which can be the precursor for many, many diseases and medical conditions).
6. A bad workman always blames his tools.....
7. Ah no. I did once try to calm her down by responding in kind. She was shocked, stopped in her tracks for about 5 seconds and then restarted the attack but 10 times more violently!! Totally barmy..... (that's Dr Google's medical opinion!)
8. My mad ex #2 graduated from throwing plates at me to throwing knives at me. Plates I could handle, but a knife thrown while I had my back to her was too much. I opted for a more peaceful life...
9. The lion already ate the Sri Lankan.....
10. Pah, just a scratch..... (as The Black Knight would say) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmInkxbvlCs My apologies to those forum members who do not see the funny side of all this - sticking your arm into a bear's cage. How stupid can you get?
11. I missed the bit in the OP's post where he states that he wants to study.....
12. Land without a deed..... you mean that it has no deed of any type?! Well, that might be the 'norm' in ban nork for Thai people, but you (as a foreigner) have zero legal legs to stand on.
13. I was aware of that death as I lay writhing on the restaurant floor. I speak Thai. Thai onlookers were saying "Look at that farang - he will be dead in 5 minutes!!"
14.
... Following the initial treatment, he was swiftly transported to Pattaya Memorial Hospital for further medical attention.
Should perhaps read: " Following the initial treatment, he was swiftly transported to Pattaya Lunatic Asylum for further mental attention" ...
15. How can this be the inaugural seaplane terminal? What about the failed seaplane venture around 2008?
16. Since most middle-age adults with good hearing cannot detect frequencies above about 12 KHz, what's the problem?
17. Quick! The lottery numbers....
18. When I was stung by a box jellyfish in Koh Phangan, I was writhing on the floor of a beach restaurant while the owner poured and rubbed bottle after bottle of vinegar all over my body (I wasn't sure where I was stung because I had my back to the damn thing!). She probably savede my life...
19. I posted last February about my encounter and getting stung by a box jellyfish in Koh Phangan (Chaloklam), and how I consider myself lucky to be alive!
20. Huh? Help me out in what way? :) I read the article in the newspaper and posted a link in my thread. Your link is just to the same article!
21. Spotted in The Guardian newspaper: A medical evacuation flight from Utapao to Russia crashed in Afghanistan, killing 2 of the 6 persons on board. The plane was carrying a Russian woman and her husband. Link here if it's allowed by the rules: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/jan/21/private-jet-crash-afghanistan-thailand-russia
22. My parents in the UK brought me up to never (EVER!) drop litter, and I would get a heavy slap if I dared to drop any litter, no matter how small. Therefore, I never drop litter and carry it around with me until I find a litter bin, or I take it home with me. I have no time for anyone who litters. The local kids in my village learnt pretty quickly never to drop any litter on my property (I drowned them in the swimming pool....). Now I just have to persuade the hens not to crap in the pool as well!
23. In another 'life' I used to operate a 'sex-chat' SMS service using my AI chat software. This was before the internet was mainstream and the place to advertise the service was in the top-shelf porn mags published by Goldstar Publications. They advised me that their most popular titles were not the young (18+) models, but was actually titles featuring grandmothers (and possibly great-grandmothers) being 'serviced' by well-hung and young black studs!!
24. Thanks but I don't have any problems with my lung capacity. Previous x-rays etc find no shadows in my lungs and my lung capacity is fine (I jog and walk 5km every day). The issue is upper respiratory tract infections leading to chronic bronchitus.
25. My lungs are always somewhat 'fragile', and I have had many cases of pneumonia in the past. Nowadays I have had both types of pneumonia vaccine (longterm cover), as well as an annual flu vaccine. But I still suffer from regular bronchitis events. I have read that there is now an oral NTHi vaccine for bronchitis and I wondered if it is available in Thailand, possibly by pre-ordering it from a private hospital. I'm trying to protect my lungs/respiratory tract from infections, particularly because I usually live in rather remote regions (Laos/Myanmar).
