  1. I visited the pub for the first time last Saturday and a very affable crowd of Foreigners and Thai were present.
Currently to my knowledge Saturday is the busiest night.
I think until things really gain momentum Thursday - Saturday are possibly the best night to make the initial visit?
To aid in supporting this new venture I will add a Google map link/GPS cordinates here probably tomorrow.
Would be great to see more joining as there was talk of a monthly BBQ if numbers can be maintained on Saturdays?

I have been checking EVERY meter of the road from Center Point and down for a farlang restaurant. And I give up after 3 days searching for the restaurant.

  2. I have been surprised many times in Thailand when the subjet is a farlang bar or a restaurant. And the reason for this is that many times they don't have anything on the outside that says that this is a farlang bar. It's like they don't want to make money at all. I have tried for two days now to find the bar. I'm sorry, but I can't find it.

  3. The bar is on the same side of the road as the Vasu Hotel much further than Bar 33, a short distance from the 7eleven, which is over the bridge on the opposite side of the klong. There are normally 2 or 3 blue and white hooped cars parked outside the adjoining premises.

Then it can't be more than 100 meters to the end of the klong?

  4. I got a email from Thai consulate he said he can give me non o visa which should be good for Thai drivers license as my son was born in Thailand and my name is on his Thai birth certificate if anyone knows if that will work I think birth cert has address on it but I am going on Thai consulate said any information would be good if I can use Non o visa and my son's birth certificate as it does have my name on it. Thanks if I can get some information

No you need a physical address in Thailand verified by the Thai landlord for the cor.

If you are renting a house/apartment in Thailand and you need a letter of residence from the immigration office you need a copy of the rental contract with your name on it, copy of the blue book for the house which you are renting, copy of the landlords ID-card, copy of the blue book for the house where the landlord lives and some copies (different pages) of your passport with a non-immigrant visa. And two passport photos.

  5. I live in kantharawichai and there is a great thai restaurant here but I need a little more

Than that.a little farung company would be a change

your better off staying away from farangs and stick with the Thais.. most farangs who sit in bars are whinging , backstabbing nothing to do losers.. Goodluck

This is what they are doing i Pattaya. They are bored and have nothing to do except to sit and drink all day long.

  6. very sorry for dumb question ..down klong..is that past taksila/bus station or other way .Im confused as to up and down especially as a kiwi involved.many thanks

I have never been at BB Bar, but further up the klong from Vasu, you have Bar 33 on the left hand side (across the klong) and Play Bar on the right hand side. I think that BB Bar must be somewhere around Play Bar. At the end of the klong on the left hand side (across the klong) you have this Thai house converted into a restaurant build by an American a long time ago.

  7. My first thought was "who has told you"? And usually that's the lady.

Normally the foreigners come to Thailand on holiday and meet the lady in a bar or find her on the internet. Often the lady has been married once or twice before and have some children. And they start talking about "good heart" and "take care". And that usually means money and many times big money.

Before you are thinking about marrying a Thai lady you should find out first what's true or not about dowry. Don't be so sure that the lady is telling you the truth. Because I believe it's NOT in her and her families best interest to do so.

I have to add that SOMETIMES when Thai marries the dowry can be very high. It can be millions of baht. But DO NOT mix this together with what we are talking about here. They pay that amount of money as an "investment" for the future inheritance that the man is gonna have from his in-laws.

What we are talking about here on this tread is the middle class and poor people. The kind of people we normally meet.

This is a link which is giving you some FACTS.

As I'm living here currently as a single and none of my ex-GF did ever ask for dowry - no not the lady did tell me.

If you state that it's a very small amount and only practiced in Isaan, that's just not the complete truth as there are families based in BKK and paying high amounts - within Thai society.

I've read a huge amount of books about Thailand, working in Thailand, Thai society rules etc. and also have sufficient Thai and Thai-Chinese friends to have an impression.

Within the poorer classes the amount should be reasonable if paid at all - eg one exGF wanted to marry me but already 35, no job, no education so not talking about sin sod.

    Bye,

    Derk

    This is what I wrote.

  8. This about dowry in Thailand is an old tradition that is slowly dying out. It's more or less only in Isaan this tradition is practiced by SOME. And you ONLY pay if you want to do so. And then we are talking about very small amounts of money and a little bit gold to the lady.

That differs from what I heard.

Also in Thai-Thai weddings in upper class BKK dowry is a topic and may reach some millions, not to be refunded (asking why? because they have the money!)

In rural areas the level is depending of the financial power of the man - if he is desired it's as low that he can afford it, if he is unwanted in the family then it's above the level.

  9. You have to pay NOTHING.

Just live happily with your wife and child.....even if it has to be away from the in-laws house.

    That's true.

I've heard all this crazy stories about foreigners paying millions of baht in dowry for the lady in Thailand. And the question I always ask myself is why are they doing it. Because there is no logical reason for doing so.

Another question I'm asking myself is who has told them that they have to pay dowry. Is it the lady? And if it's her she is lying. If it's another foreigner some has been lying to him too.

This about dowry in Thailand is an old tradition that is slowly dying out. It's more or less only in Isaan this tradition is practiced by SOME. And you ONLY pay if you want to do so. And then we are talking about very small amounts of money and a little bit gold to the lady. What many foreigners don't know is that there is the FATHER OF THE BRIDE who pays for the wedding.

My policy about Thai ladies is that the bad ones ask for money the good ones don't.

  10. I've lived some years in Thailand now and this about buying property in Thailand is a "never ending story". Although "everyone" knows that a foreigner can't buy property in Thailand they are still looking for the loophole. Trust me on this. There are no loophole.

You can do some agreements with the lady so she can't throw you out of the house but it's still NOT your property. And the day you think that enough is enough and you pack your bag and go you can't sell the property. The house has ONLY a value for you when you are living in it or if you are renting it out.

What seems to me to be the smart thing to do is to rent a house in YOUR OWN NAME at let the lady live there together with you. And if the "shit hits the fan" just kick her out of YOUR HOUSE. I know that is a very harsh thing to do, but don't they do the same thing to us? And we have even paid for the house and the property.

  11. If I seen a seriously injured person thai or farang they would get my help.

I would not walk away and would deal with the consequences.

What's the world coming to when fellow humans won't help a dying person.

f they want to sue me good luck I have deep pockets.

    Thank you for your contribution.

But I still haven`t heard from anyone who has actually gotten in trouble for helping.

I*ve never gotten in to trouble because my right foot has stepped hard on the accelerator every time I've seen that there has been an accident. It's harsh, but that's life in Thailand.

It's hard but thats life in Thailand???

No.. you should have written.. "It's harsh, but what difference does one more careless person in the world make?"

You just need to hope that when you are in need someone stops to help you.

This has nothing to do with what you should do or not. But if your kindness is more important to you than your wallet you have to pay. And as a "farlang" they are gonne ask for conciderabely more money from you than they would want from a thai person.

  12. This is some og the sites that I found after "5 min. work". And they all say the same thing. It's no doubt that you need a non-immigrant visa to obtain a thai drivers license. But how can I prove it when my friend doesn't believe what it says on these sites? He says that he has some friends in Pattaya and that they have gotten theirs drivers licenses on a tourist visa so what I'm saying is only "bullshit".

  14. do anybody now where to find the test questions or test material from the theory test for thai drivers licence.

I have a Thai drivers license for car and want to take for Motorcycle. So I want to fresh up my memory...

Just remember that the correct place to park is in the middle of the street, and that a tank used in warfare is perfectly legal to drive on public roads.

As for OP's question, I would just show up with a stack of paperwork and ask. I've read before that driver's licenses won't be issued on a tourist visa, but then I've talked to plenty of people with first hand experience that shows otherwise. In all likelyhood it will depend on the mood of the person working at the land transport office on the day you show up. If they turn you away, try another one, there are five of them in Bangkok. Here's a map: http://www.bkkriders.com/lto/

After many years in Thailand I know you need a non-immigrant visa to have a thai drivers license. You have to trust me on that. I also know that officials in Thailand do whatever they wanna do when they wanna do. My problem is that I have to prove by showing my friend an official site on the net that my claim holds water.

  15. First. PASSPORT WITH VISA (ORIGINAL AND PHOTO COPY)

I have a small problem with this sentence above from a link from the Department Of Land Transport. I know that I need a non-immigrant visa for a 1 year temporary driving license, but this sentence only says "with visa", NOT what kind of visa. The problem is that I have a friend that I can't convince that he needs a non-immigrant visa. And I cant't find an official site that can prove my claime. Can someone on the forum help me with this?

  16. I found this apartment house on the net. It's on the outskirts of the city, but it's not far away from Big C. When they were building the apartment houses long time ago they wanted 3000 bath/month. The swimmingpool is nice, but it's only 160 cm. deep.. I've been there a couple of times the last year.

  17. Apartment houses are "all over" the city. Walk by the canal and they are easy to spot. There is no problem finding a room to stay. You have to pay between 3500-4500 baht/month. Usually he rooms are fully furnished with A/C and internet.

To find a house you need some time to look around. So my advise to you is to stay in an apartment house for some time first when you are looking.

  18. I'm happy to say the meet-up is still going strong. There is also an "unofficial" meet-up happening on Friday nights. Tends to be a bar running a beer special or bowling at PJ Bowl. PM one of us and we'll keep you informed.

It looks like this old thread has "died out" so I ask the same question again. Is this still on?
