  1. You just need your home country licence and the permit

And a lot of observational skills in the country. Please expect the unexpected like.....

    1) Cars/bikes driving the wrong way on the wrong side of the road.

    2) no lights on, at night

    3) dogs/cows wandering across the road.

    4) a red traffic lights doesn't always mean people stop.

    5) turn signals only used at the same time as turning (not before).

Stay safe and hope you enjoy your holiday.

    6. When someone flashes the headlights it DOESN'T mean that you can go.

  2. Only good if your a tourist. If not get a Thai DL.

    Exactly.

On a permanent basis you need to convert your DL to a Thai DL.

Tons of threads in the motoring forum.

    Nothing Isan specific here.

    Start here:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/819170-thai-dl-checklist-updated-2-dec-2015/

You would get a 2 year temporary Thai DL at first.

Two years? 'Twas one year when I got mine.

It was for 1 year. Now it's for 2 years.

Note: Your first Driving License is considered a Temporary Driving License. This is for car and motorbike. The license is valid for 2 years.

Renewing a Driver License is for a 5-year period.

  3. I rent on my own . Alone

This is the paper work the Immigration Office normally wants. (2 copies)

    1. Blue Book of the house you are renting.

    2. Blue Book of the owners house.

    3. ID-card of the owner.

    4. Passport (picture, Non Immigrant Visa and immigration card)

    5. 2 pictures.

My advice is to bring with you the owner to the Immigration Office. Sometimes the officers can be a little bit difficult.

  4. If you want one to apply for a drivers license or register a vehicle the tourist police will sign and stamp a form for you

Immigration will not do a certificate for those reasons without a form form the DLT.

Maybe this Immigration Office doesn't issue a letter of residence for thai drivers lisence or for buing a vehicle, but every Immigration Office I know of will do so.

Your Ambassy and the local police station will issue a letter of residence. The "yellow book" is also a Letter of Residence.

It looks like this (from the Immigration Office)

  5. Why would tourist come to Thailand and pay as much for a restaurant meal and a beer as they would at home?

Because the Issan hooker (from the OP) he takes home, after dinner and the beer, costs 1/10 the price of a western girl and is 10x more attractive (not to mention 1/2 the age and 1/2 the weight).

But now you have an increasing numbers of tourists ( farangs ) in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodscha and Myanmar. Most of this places are cheaper and easier ( Visa ) as Thailand. Thailand is down for theie politicle situation and mant restrictions and the habit of cheating / overprizing the people.

my next stop colombia.... 180 days on arrival, FREE

Sounds good. Nothing is for free in Thailand.

  6. Thank God that I live in a quiet corner of Thailand. No Chinese, no Russians, no stress at all. It has been like this for ages and it's gonna be like this for many years to come. Life is good.

  7. I'm a 56 years old foreigner living in the middle of Isaan with my 21 years old Thai lady. She doesn't ask for money. Her mother and father don't ask for money. She has NEVER been a prostitute. I have NOT bought land and built a house og given the lady a ton of gold. Actually no gold at all. Not even an IPhone. What other people say about that I just give a sh.....

So you give her absolutely nothing & she still with you.

Either you've got a fatal illness & you've left your assets to her & will die soon

    Or

    Your lying

    Which one is it?

I have heard this kind of comments before. And generally it's because they don't know too much about thai culture. And that is understandable when they usually are "living" in a bar in Pattaya for years. And sadly for this people Thai ladies are generally far away from behaving like bar ladies. I say "sadly" because they often are married to a bar lady living in Pattaya or in her village.

The reasons for a Thai lady to marry a man, foreigner or not, can be many. One of the reasons can be that the man can provide for the family. NOT for her mother and father, but for her and the children. And I'm NOT talking about land, house, gold, money and a car, but providing for the daily life.

For a good Thai lady the age differens doesn't need to mean anything. And often an old man is more attractive as a life partner than a young one. This because of the stability the old man represents financially and personally. In my view young Thai men tend to take more care of them selves than of the family. Drinking and gambling seem to be the way to go.

  9. Hey... just arrived at this place..

So, is there any suggestion for a nice bar where the people can understand english ? :'') *desperate*

Try 20 Up Bar by the canal. The owner speaks a little bit english and the waitresses are mostly young students and they speak some english. My girlfriend who works there speaks english well.

  10. I'm a Norwegian living in Maha Sarakham province for the past 15 years. For some foreigners it may seem strange but I love Isaan and the people who live there. But now II have met a lady that comes from Bang Khan Mak in Lop Buri and she wants to go back when she has finished her education. I went there last week for one day and I liked what I saw. What I understand there is no real nightlife like we have in Maha Sarakham. For me that is no problem, A friendly lady, a couple of farlang/thai friends and some botles of beers is enough for me. In Maha Sarakham there is very few foreigners so I'm used to be living in a "Thai world". Can someone tell me a little bit about the place and what it's like to live there.

  11. Glad to hear all"s good in BB bar

BB Bar is no longer a farlang bar. It has a new thai owner now. And to say that the old BB Bar was a friendly place to stay I think is to take the word friendly a little bit too far.

  12. For a decent house in Maha Sarakham you do't need to pay more than 5-6 baht. I rent a semi detached house (58 m2) at the edge of the city and I pay 5000 baht. I stay now in Norway, but I'm probably back in Maha Sarakhan at the end of this month. If you are interested I can phone a friend in Maha Sarakham and ask her to look out for a house. She told me not long ago about some houses for rent outside her school.

  13. Thanks guys!wai.gif

Been out today and got a price of 3,000B Korat to BKK wait & return. Nice old guy he drove me to Chok Chai one day, so I think I will accept his offer.

I live in Maha Sarakham and a couple of month back The taxi driver offered me 3000 Baht from Suwannaphum. The normal rate is 5800 Baht, but I never pay that. Normally I'm not paying more than 4500 Baht. A "thai price" from Korat to Bangkok is 2500 Baht (100 Baht/10 km.).
