I live in Maha Sarakham (ALONE) and I have a female friend taking care of "my house" when I'm not there. In her village outside MS there is a lady which have two foreign men sending her money every month. One German and one Norwegian. The Norwegian is going to build her a house.
My female friend told me that this lady in the village wanted me as her third "walking ATM". Like my friend wouldn't tell me about her other men. I wonder sometimes what Thai ladies are thinking about foreign men. It can't be to good I think.

I just read most of the entries. My God what a bunch of pathetic loosers. Find a nice girl, there are plenty out there. No it takes more than loose change. I have been married for 34 years to a great woman. Most of my friends are married to great Thai gals. Not all see you as an ATM. But a true expat in Thailand can work this out for themselves. How much money do you think you would be spending on a wife back home. Bit more than Thailand. Or you could stay at home, and frequent some lousy pub and die at the age of 55.
If the woman can't take care of her self, In Thailand or elsewhere, and she needs a man to support her I wouldn't respect her enough to marry her.
Agree.
Where in this equation does the wifes contribution come in financially.
So you have to spend on an Issan wife to keep then.Sounds very much like an ATM.
Usually it's not about contribute anything if you don't mean some personal favors. Every man with a sound mind would understand that a poor lady in a village in Isaan would easily "give her left leg" to marry a foreigner. And I don't think that her family would mind a bit if she did either.

Not sure about this, let me ask my wife
Are you sure that she will tell you the truth?

This one I think is a real beauty. Did the man tell Thai ladies to go for the money?

For a normal Isaan family 9600 Baht per month is a lot of money, but It's not the daughter married to a foreigner abroad that makes the big financial impact on the Isaan economy. It's the foreigner living in Isaan that is the real "walking ATM".

Just what a fool will pay you
No one. It's NOT his house and land. What ever he is thinking.
Actually if he paid for the house, it is his house.
If he chooses to demolish it, and has all the receipts as proof he paid, not even the police can stop him from knocking it to the ground.
I would like to see this man knocking down this house. The owner of the land can tell him to p... off he is trespassing. And the police would certainly not help him.
If he wants to demolish the house he MUST have a contract with the contractor and the land MUST be his ( leasing). Or doing it on the owners behalf. And that I think never is gonna happen.

The OP is asking for responses from someone who might have a idea on current prices. Why do people feel the need to start the same, old, boring story about the farang-bargirl, who got taken for a ride. There are many, many happily married couples. Just because the land title is in the wife's name, that doesn't mean that the husband/wife can't mutually decide on when to sell and what to do with the money afterwards.first off, you own nothing, as you cannot own land ... unless you are thai
second, you might try to sell all to a love sick farang puppy who fell in love with the next bargirl and thinking with the little head instead of the big one and has to rescue her and buy her a house & some land, in her name off course
In theory I'm sure that I can fly, but I think that's never gonna happen.

I live in Maha Sarakham, but there are not too many of us. If you want to meet some there is a small shop not far away from the OLD university inside the city where an Australian (Nick) has some tables outside where he sells beer and sometimes pizza. He said last time a met him that he was coming back to Thailand in September.
There is a farlang bar by the canal called BB Bar witch could have been something but the owner went back to New Zealand. On week days it's closed, but I have seen that it has been open on a couple of Saturdays.

I know I'm beautiful so it's normal that they talk about me.

A Norwegian invented international tourism and then we went all over the world.

Usually a Thai doesn't talk loud. If some one does the person is impolite and people around think there is gonna be a fight soon.
How long have you been here?
Soon 14 years now. I live in Maha Sarakham.

To be honest I can only say that I'm starting to be a little bit fed up with all the foreigners who are building all these houses in Thailand. Every time is seems to me like they are only ending up with a lot of problems one way or the other. I thought that the foreigners came to Thailand for having a easy going and stress free life. I'm certainly going to Thailand for that kind of life so I stay away from everything that has something with housebuilding to do.
Wow, whats with the negativity there young grasshopper?
These houses should be viewed as an opportunity for you to pick up something on the cheap.
Pity they didnt build them in Joho Or KK, would make them much more marketable and attractive.
If you ask me we are more like "sitting ducks" ready to get "plucked".

OP , yes you can do all that you want and more , as one poster commented, an opportunity exists for another "Alan " type business ... however that comes with a lot of headaches including , staff and work permits ...
your idea to build and sell a property for the western market, imo would work , if located well and in the vicinity of one of the major regional cities ..Udon < Ubon< Surin< Korat < Khon Kaen ....
As for TV ,do not under any circumstances ,ask for advice on anything that may make money here ...you will be cremated !!
goodluck ...
There are many good reasons for NOT starting a business in Thailand. And one of them is Thai law. To do business in Thailand for us foreigners is NOT the same as doing business in our own home countries.
Another good reason is the language. You have to speak Thai.
How many times haven't I seen farlang businesses out of business. I'm asking my self if the foreigners really know what they are doing. It doesn't seem to me that they do.
If someone seriously wants to do some business in Thailand he MUST have a serious Thai business partner. NOT his Thai wife.

His darling (and her family) will want the opportunity to skim from his own build.
Sounds like you didn't chose your darling very well.
I'm not daft enough to try and build or buy a house in rural Issan.
Bought my house in CM, from a developer, who published his prices in Thai only. Paid the same as everyone else.
Just daft enough to buy it in a faring ghetto.
I'm not daft enough to buy land in Thailand. Someone calls this a scam. And I'm one of them.

For some strange reasons many foreigners think that Thailand is like back home. I promise you it's NOT. Thinking about making some money in Thailand is usually a dead end. You need a work permit and that is very hard to come by. Doing some work without one I will NOT recommend. Especially this days. And if someone is thinking that there is no inforcement of the law in Thailand they are making a very big mistake. What the officials are NOT DOING today they probably will do tomorrow.

kalasin my other half from there its as dead as a maggot that place
I have to admit that I don't know too much about Kalasin and what's going on there, but I'm pretty much sure that it's the same as in other small towns in Isaan. And in my hometown Maha Sarakham there is a lot going on. Day and night.
When other foreigners express this kind of feeling towards places in Isaan they normally do not know what they are talking about. Strangely they often think they are "experts" on Isaan after being there"once or twice" visiting the in laws.

Maybe it's only me, but I can't find German wine in the shop. Someone with a better "luck" than me?
-
But be aware off that the lady inside the shop doesn't speak one word of English. And the beer is VERY expensive.
-
Damn, no more free beer from competing candidates in the run-up to village boss elections. I found those to be a fascinating recreation of 19th Century England's "Rotten Boroughs".
Probably a reduced interest in pre-national election village parties too. No point in all the cuties coming back from Bangkok/Pattaya/Phuket to see mama (and collect their 2,000 baht pay-offs) either.
Da_mn these squaddies - such spoilsports

Some of them will come back with a foreigner who builds a big house, buys some cars, gold, the usual stuff....
Then they become Phujaibaahn....
Business as usual you mean? He-he.

But does the foreigner understand this "business agreement" or does he mistaken it for true love?
