Remove silver spoon... Replace with plastic spoon from a mama noodle pack.

If one is really, and I mean really skint for a while, then Thailand is a place to survive easily enough if you're desperate enough.

4-5 meals of 30b crap a day and some flearidden backpacker hole. It ain't gonna be fun Dorothy, but if that's your choice then take it like a man and do it for a month.

4-5 meals a day - Jeez you really eat! 7-11 burgers ar 20baht, frozen dishes (zapped for free in store) are around the 30 baht mark depending on the item concerned - instant noodle (mama etc) is 6 baht a packet, or cups are 10-20 baht depending on brand (at present in my 7-11 at least there is a promo for mama cup on 2 for 1 at 20baht, 10 10baht each). If one just needs to survive here, then a couple of bottles of water and noodles (just like being a student again - without the cider), one could easily eat for 100 baht a day or less.

Not really, no. But I eat real food. Eating that crap one would need to up the amount.

Mama nooden, 2 for 1 @ 20b. So one is usually 20b nowadays when there isn't a promo. Last I remember around 3-4 years ago they were 13b. The 'expats' on their pensions will have to plan a boycott in protest. biggrin.png

  2. Unaware of any Muay Thai stadium at Thapae Gate.

the Muay Thai stadium at Thapae Gate

Erm.. the BBC.. the Beer Bar Centre .. was Chiang Mai's madhouse from the eighties to about 2001 when Loa Kroh Rd opened up

The boxing ring was surrounded by well patronised beer bars entertained by young lady boxers.. blind folded boxers.. kid boxers.. and various other acts that included a Thai guy who would get well off his face before performing his 'fire dance act' . good job my reactions were quicker back then..

What was the name of the main Aussie bar in there again, something 'Blue'?

    Electric blue?

  4. Oh no! I wonder where these fresh foreign tourists who rightly have no knowledge of the bizarre local culture and interaction got the idea to do all this! rolleyes.gif

Getting drunk and throwing water around songkran time! The savages! Were there no underage Thai girls writhing topless on top of cars yet, like last songkran? rolleyes.gif

  5. Simple: no DL, no insurance.

Actually not so simple at all in Thailand. biggrin.png

I know a handful of people unfortunate enough for vehicle insurance to be needed who did not have licenses, all insurances paid, one had to pay a 400b fine to the coppers for not having one though.

Experience, genuine education on the matter, or slightly ignorant Western preconceptions?

Well if you already know, <deleted> are you asking? ROFL biggrin.png

Don't shoot the messenger just because they're not telling you what you want to hear.

    Their vehicles weren't rented.

  6. There is no fee for a certificate of residence.

WP or yellow tabien baan all count as such, you can also get a certificate from your embassy (for a price)

    No official 'fee'.

I'd be interested in hearing of 5 immigration offices in the country that offer the service for free. :D

The most common definitely-not-a-fee is around 500b from reading up on the matter.

My consulate was 800b up until last year, checking last week it has jumped up to almost 2000b.

200b or 2000b, easy decision really.

  8. What do you think?

It doesn't matter what I think. I'm not Thai. After 7 years of living here I think that what I think is usually the opposite to reality in Thailand.

You're driving a car without valid license.

    400 baht fine.

By most reports it doesn't N/A insurance. (Remember, don't think like a Westerner ;) )

Where do you live BTW, 3 weeks for a certificate of address?

Bangkok. Went to immigration this morning. They said 3 weeks (confirmed in both Thai and English). Of course that could mean 3 days or 3 months in reality.

  9. I have a 5 year Thai Motorcycle license.

Going to organize a car DL today but was told the Cert. of Residence will take 3 weeks to arrive.

My 65 yr old mother is arriving next week and I want to rent a car for a 3 day roadtrip the following week. I would be driving for the duration of the trip. My Irish DL expired about 10 years ago. My mother has a valid full Irish DL.

I presume renting a car from Avis or whatever from the airport would be okay with my mother's license as I read that tourists can use thier license for 6 months or something. But she won't be driving. I would.

How would this affect the car rental insurance should anything happen?

    Thanks.

  10. Took all the copies I read I needed.

None of the counter staff handing out the forms could fathom what I wanted. I wrote down 'Certificate of Residence', 'Residence Certificate' and an other few that all had them utterly bamboozled.

I went down stairs and got some infor from the net and printed off TM18, TM 20, and another nameless one. Went back up to them with the printouts.

They were just as bamboozled. They didn't have any of the forms there and were like rabbits in a headlight looking at them, in the end they just said to fill out one of the print outs and go inside to the next desk.

The nameless one (no TM number on it), which was this:

    http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/download/pdf/res_cert.pdf

The desk sent me to Dept. J2 for Tourist Visa Extensions. Only 5 people ahead of me.

He was surprisingly nice, took all my docs, asked another lady how much they are, then unfortunately told me it will be mailed to me in 3 weeks. :( I thought it would be a pick up in 30 minutes affair and need it for a DL to rent a car for my family's holiday here. Arriving next week. :(

Anyway, fee only 200b when most others around the main cities of Thailand say they have to pay 500.

  11. As of now immigration in CM have stopped issuing the Cert of residence again .Another thread confirms this .

Interesting, i tried open a bank account in Pattaya but the bank require just certificate of residence,

so then in CM such cert is either not needed or its impossible to open bank account.

Just go to a different branch, or see a different teller. Some say yes no problem, some say no no no cannot.

  12. (EDIT: Also, 'poor city planning'.. ?! That area had traffic 700 years ago! Good luck to plan a couple hundred years ahead! wink.png )

Well if it was planned 700 years ago then it is certainly the best model as things haven't advanced since then.

Reminds me of a Thai company I did some work for and they had an unbelievably poor data entry system. Upon looking at it in shock one of the old proud Thai managers declared it was the exact same method that the company used when they began 150 years ago. How many different items were you dealing with then? I asked. Around 120. And now? Around 30,000. So perhaps it might be time to overhaul the system. *all Thais present look on in shock*.
