  1. To say people shouldn't visit Thailand because this guy got robbed is about as smart as saying don't visit LA because there's gang violence and drive by shootings.

If the Dane actually treated this like any other big 13+ million city and not a package tour he would have been better off. Don't come here thinking its a playground.

You need to ve vigilant like anywhere else. No matter where you go the dumb/clueless/unlucky will fall prey for the scammers and robbers. That goes for the whole world except maybe Singapore.

  2. Here is the true story:

Young Dane visits Thailand for the first time. He goes to Soi Cowboy and brings 10,000 baht just in case.

At 3 am, in a drunken stupor, he goes to find a TukTuk and asks to be taken to the BTS. The TukTuk driver repeatedly says no because the BTS is closed but the Young Dane will have none of it and insists to be taken there (in a rude way).

The TukTuk driver agrees and feels slightly insulted. He tried to help and instead lost his face. The Young Dane speaks to the driver for a bit but is very intoxicated.

The TukTuk driver decides that he should rob him and takes him into a dark soi after confirming with his friends (the Dane is sleeping at this point).

The TukTuk driver slams the brakes once in the soi which forces the weight of the sleeping Young Dane forward causing him to wake up (and hit his head).

After being robbed and kicked he is left in the street. As he comes out on Sukhumvit again he is dirty, drunk and broke. The cops laugh at the farang kinok who they believe just got too wasted and gives some taxi money.

The Young Dane goes back to Denmark and tells everyone how much Thailand sucks.

Moral of the story? This is like the wild wild west. Don't be careless or it will cost you.

  3. Honestly, not much to say here. That's what happens when you steal someone's phone and resist arrest. I don't feel sorrow or sympathy just because he was on vacation, for all I know he could have been a real douche bag who probably stole more than one phone in Kiwiland (given that he impulsively did it again while drunk even though he was ABROAD.)

  4. I don't want to come off as rude or racist or judging, but there is my interpretation.

Thai girls that have NPD have potentially been involved with many guys and / or bar work / or worse. You either need to have NPD to work in those industries or you will develop it naturally since you need to trade yourself for money. = BIG warning sign, pull out immediately.

If your girl comes from a poor family, chances are you are being duped. Exercise caution and don't make her the owner of your business.

If there is a significant age gap, realize that in 9/10 cases you are being duped for money. Exercise extreme caution and don't make her the owner of your business.

If your girl comes from the northeast (bear with me) and has had many farang boyfriends before you, PULL OUT NOW. You are being duped for sure.

If your girl hangs around farangs a lot and seems to like white guys / has many commenting on her posts / texting her, exercise caution and don't invest in the relationship. Probably a gold digger.

To summarize: If it seems too good and jolly to be true it probably is. There are tons of good girls in this country that wouldn't steal from you and wouldn't be out for money. You just need to date from a different pool. If you find someone who is the opposite of all the points I posted above you should be fine. And don't trust people too much, period.

  5. People reading this thread might become afraid of traveling by bus in Thailand. They should be aware that theft frequently occurs on so called backpacker buses that take only tourists, not on normal buses which are used by Thai people.

    THIS.

I keep telling tourists to just go to the bus station and buy their ticket. Its the most obvious thing yet tourists keep insisting on using the "Tours/Buses/Tourist Traps" scam shop and have their possessions stolen.

Some said they just didn't want to bother finding the bus station and rather just bought it at the first best tourist shop. Each one to their own I guess.

I told one guy to just behave like he would in his home country. If he wouldn't go to some souvenir shop to buy bus tickets in his home country then don't do it here either. He looked astonished. Some people just leave their brains and street smarts at home when coming to LOS.

  6. I agree with Nomad Joe. I have seen many tourists blame the locals for stealing their property or being short changed, only to discover they themselves misplaced their belongings or didn't count their money properly. I wouldn't be surprised if the wallet fell from his pocket or if he already found it in his bag. Sounds "german" to immediately blame the last guy behind him for stealing his wallet. There are too many holes in this story.
