You find homeless people to use for your labor and then you’re surprised when they’re lazy.

They arent homeless they give up where they are  living to live with us, The latest pair lived a bout 1  mile away in a  rented  house which they gave notice on to live with us.

In the cities, there is some fear of the law, in the countryside with a farang, forget it. Men are going to take you for everything they can and split.

Try hiring women with children from the local community. People who you literally know where they and their parents live. And then treat them like family. That is your only hope.

If you already knew, why’d you ask?

Pretty obvious why, to see what others have tried or seen work, and from what Ive mentioned its not only us finding it hard to find anyone, local Thai business owners have said the same.

If I dont agree with you is that "defensive" I dont think so.

A simple no, we are not providing those things would do. No point in getting defensive.

The pool of potential employees you are trying to draw from seems to be very small.

No would be incorrect. the  pool is large and mostly lazy.

They get Uniforms, Social Security, Providence Fund and Private Medical?

We buy them work clothes including MANY pairs of shoes and  boots ie wellies, gloves,  hats ,trousers etc, we  will take them to the hospital and pay for any drugs and the cost to see a doctor if they arent in the 30 baht scheme.

WE dont want people who dont want to live at the land so the  house part is not negotiable and most come from far away and this has never  been an issue.

Renting by us out in the  boonies is about 1500+ a  month for a  1  room house

As mentioned its a 5 day week 99% of work places  want 6 days, you are  talking about larger companies  for provident and social security, no one  doing this sort of work  for a private employee  will get or expect this.

We pay way over your 300 a  day its  more like 450 + the perks.

I personally  think we provide them with plenty.

    One bike for two people?

    One room for two people?

I think the problem may be that you're limiting your pool of labor to couples that have no place to stay and not transportation. Pretty small group to draw from.

What can you rent the room for?

Were it me, I'd try getting people that have homes and transportation, pay a little more per day, have a monthly bonus when they don't moss more than a couple days, provide a nice lunch every day and free coffee all day.

Quit letting them draw all their money every day, limit them to 700 a week so they have something at the end of the  month.

Let them buy their own rice.

The latest have their own bike and use our s  occasionally.

As has been mentioned before, unless this is income you need to survive i'd just give up, not worth the hassle IMO.

I do it as I like my palm garden I could live without the pineapples, I dont grow  them for money but i dont need to use  all the land and its the easiest crop to take care of requiring the least amount of work, I just dont want a  jungle on the rest of the land...................giving up's  for  pussies.

All those suggesting its the salary or something else have  failed to mention a given salary????????? why is that?

Oh please, how does asking what something is worth, imply it’s worth nothing?

Ok heres  the costs, free  house, cost 36k to have installed  delivered , free  water cost 150k for two  wells  but of course this is for all the land and is drinkable and has  been tested at a lab in BKK 5k cost, free  rice 300  a bag a month? free  bike cost us about 7k bought very cheap off a  friend  but would have been at least 15k we used to also include free  fuel for about 4  years  but dont now, yes they can take the bike away if they want because I have my own and dont need  it and dont forget its a 5  day week. Maybe 4-5  times a  year we'll take them out for a meal and Wife often brings them clothes she gets free  when tenants  move out of our  rooms and shoes.

What do the benefits cost, an what are the benefits worth?

Does he give them an allowance such that they can stay where they like?

Do they get to take the motorbike on holidays?

It’s not peanuts, but clearly he’s not getting the help he needs.

We never had that much difficulty attracting and retaining low skilled labor.

so pleas e tell me what YOU are  paying and what you are   offering EXACTLY

The automobile sector  data says otherwise.

    1. The sector has been growing  significantly, and associated with that are the number of jobs. Thailand  went from 483,000 jobs in 2010 to 700,000 jobs in 2016, and is still growing.

    2. There are a significant number of skilled workers, and that too is growing. Thailand has a national education and training strategy to train labour for the industry. Despite that, a large portion of the sector's labour is unskilled  and not "automated'. The unskilled labour do the mundane tasks of cleaning, moving stock, preparing and shipping  parts & finished products, and other general duties such as landscaping, cafeteria staffing, guards etc.

    The Thailand BOI provides this interesting item;

With 29 universities and other institutes which provide automotive and mechanical engineering programs, it is forecasted that, in 2021, 61% of all workforces in Thai automotive industry are high-skilled labor with high vocational diploma or above, 27% with bachelor’s in engineering degree and 5% with master’s degree or above. Many auto assemblers in Thailand, i.e., Isuzu, Toyota and Honda, have their own employee training programs which help improve their competitiveness and efficiency.

    3. Note the last sentence above, which explains alot. Training. The employers invest in their workers. Retention is high in the industry because the pay is relatively good and their are benefits.

In consideration of the above, your outright dismissal of the others' comments is not  supported by the  industry data..

In respect to the OP, the reality is that the current pay and working conditions are not sufficient to attract and to retain good labour. Thailand has near full employment and it does have a labour shortage. In the capitalist system, and free markets, labour is an input, much as fertilizer or water is. If the input is in short supply, then the cost of the input usually increases.

In plain language, the pay and working conditions need to  be modified. Even though the OP believes that they are adequate, the results demonstrate that they are not attracting quality staff.  Thailand is not North Korea where the peasants can be compelled to work on the farm.

suggest a  salary  for a 5  day  week  with  accommodation, free  motorbike, electric. water.........for  this type of  work?? hours 7-12 then 2 till 5.

This includes  full training all power  tools inc hedge  cutter, leaf  blower ( no brooms  used here) weed  whacker except we rarely  use it as dont have massive weeds.

Also includes  gloves  boots  hats face  masks  etc etc

You mention "unskilled  labour" which is what we have they are  not working in a  skilled  job and it does not require a  "skilled" salary.

Its  not rocket science for them.

We even have taken them to hospital when they have been ill and paid for the bag full of smarties they  issue  them.

They always want more, it will never be enough. I can't possibly count the people I Know that had staff problems.

I have several friends with high end restaurants. The waiters and kook's get very good pay and the tips are divided amongst all. The tips are mostly more than there regular pay !

When they get there pay? they don't come the next day because they spend it all last night !!!

They don't come as they please, sometimes a flimsy excuse or no excuse at all.

Poeple who dont know really dont know how it is to deal with this crap, have no idea of what its like "now" with staff, maybe some years back it wa s better now its  pretty abysmal, the endless lies, never ever an honest word said by them, wonder if their whole life is  a fabrication, they usually arrive with 0 baht and need  daily  payment, its quite  pathetic  and they are the first to bleat "were poor"....not hard to see why

For a outdoor under the sun type of job, you would need to pay 600-700 baht per day for workers to work. Folks here don't give a damn, foreign labor is getting pickier by the day too, thai laws are actually benefiting the foreign labors allowing them to switch jobs easier.

    work offered for one person 5  day week 14k = 700 a  day+  house + electric+ water+ motorbike.

You and I have discussed this very problem before and mostly our experiences are carbon copies of yours.  However, we currently employ a semi feral Husband & wife couple who live locally and do not want the free house.  They have their own place on a few rai only a 1/2 K away. They are pretty low working class and both are on Ya ba.  We are paying them 350 a day each and she comes most days and he works between catering work he does for another guy doing weddings and funerals.  But they both work very hard, her in particular.  They have useful skills because they also run their own land and extraordinarily, they use their initiative and do extra things without being asked to.  We in turn go the extra mile and do bits and pieces for them and help them, looking after their daughter while they work and buying the odd clothes for them when my wife sees things cheap.  The daughter is the same age as my wife's  sister's kid next door and they are in the same class at school.  The staff seem to be intelligent enough to realize that employers and jobs like us and what we offer are hard to find.  They have an established lifestyle and what we offer fits in better than anything else they have tried.  We still need a house keeper but the wife worker is not suitable to d it.  She is an outside girl, head down all day.  Sometimes I think it is too good to last but I sure hope it does.  They even work hard when we are not here.   I will not see you before your trip but we will catch up in a couple of months.   Hope this does not stuff up your trip.  You have already had that in the past.    Cheers

Cheers  back November 1 hope immigration dont stop me with my pith helmet and plus  fours, + riding crop. Welcome any time

I can imagine the OP walking around wearing a pith helmet ti match his plus fours and riding boots smoking a big pipe.

I hired a woman to run the office and paid her 40K /month it was a small operation I later found out that she was going to the Sport City complex for 2-3 hours each day whilst I was away dealing with the engineering side. So money was not an issue she was also not lazy if she was working out for 3 hours/day but like Kannot I believe if you try to be kind on any level they see it as weakness and not kindness.

Kannot can you hire a Foreigner I would not mind those terms.

sometimes its tempting but the local  village  gossips  would be  all over that, they make up enuff  crap as it  is

  18. Some good  replies here and the usual tosh but to be expected, formulating  a plan now to deal with this crap, plan 1 stake staff to floor cover in jam and let the ants loooo.....................no no sorry

2 By wifi extender and extend wifi range to pond get another wifi camera ( have 4  already) make a point of saying looks like fish stocks are down maybe a neighbour is sneaking in at  night but with this new camera with battery back up ( not  true) and  good  night vision ( true) lets see....I'll get wife to  casually mention  all of this, will also get the policeman who comes here to casually mention the last staff and invent some fish stealing story and some dire consequences where the farang went crazy ape  shit with them and took it to court etc.

I will treat them like crap as  well, I usually  buy them at least 1-2 drinks a day when we are in the sun working, that now ends, Ill still keep smiling at them though.

Work ethic has dropped off now and they are getting lazy, Ive been away 5  days and  theyve done bugger  all, my problem is  i have to go to the Uk in 3  weeks  for 6  weeks, we have another man who can come aged  52 but we dont know him, maybe better the devil for the next 2  months.  If  not Ill hire him whislt Im away. For those that dont know me ( arent you lucky) My wife lives in BKK and comes here every 2  weeks so someone has to be here all the time hence  staff need to live in.

They have 6  weeks to completely get all the weeds  out of the pineapples, If  I come back and find no change and 3-4 foot  high weeds  then the Wifes sister  will come and take over their job (not really but thats the BS  story we'll spin them) then hire someone else but at "MY convenience"

I think my  biggest problem is i do empathise  about weed  pulling but from now on its ferk em, as my wife says "dear for them is  normal work in the heat" for me  its quite  hard.

The sad thing is if I stay with them theyll work well, soon as im gone sit on their <deleted>.

Time to toughen up for me.
