  1. why are you comparing MacOS/PC to a Corolla and Mercedes?

a proper analogy would be to compare a Mustang to a Smart fortwo (apple)

I have been working in IT for 23+ years now and I don't know a single knowledgeable person who would choose Apple over a Windows PC

in fact, I only know two guys who were hardcore Apple fans and both of them were clueless regarding computer usage apart from very basic stuff.

so one of those guys I don't talk to much to but the second still talks to me (known him for 21 years) and always had those stupid rants about why Apple was better than PC

so 2 years ago I sent him a new proper PC (in parts) without telling him a word about it and told him to assemble it and use it for a week or two

if he wanted it he could pay me monthly and if not I would send someone to take it back.

    he absolutely kept it

I forced him to learn how to build a computer, a thing he had never done before and in that two years, his knowledge of computers/tech probably went up tenfold.

I have never heard him talk about his iMac since unless I asked about it (he is now using it as a Plex media server, lol)

also heard he had done a (very unnecessary) upgrade to his PC recently and also kitted it with 3 monitors

you should buy that new iMac that comes with a 5400 rpm hard drives (a technology that was superseded in 1992)

this guy knows what he is talking about as he has been working making a killing of repairing faulty apple devices for years.

so for you, dunning-kruger effect it is.

  2. I agree with the above, putting an SSD on my 300$ Walmart laptop from 5 years ago made it 12x as fast to start as it used to be

so instead of pressing power button and waiting 6 minutes for the hard drive usage to go under 100% (and unusable laptop)..

now I can be logged into Windows 10 in under 25 seconds.

  3. how about these.

I used to bring my dog to get shots at a vet shop here, I ONLY wanted shots but my Thai is not good enough to explain that so I brought a friend most times.

every single time I went there they would pick up my dog as soon as i entered the door and take it away without even knowing what i wanted, do whatever THEY wanted and then present me with a bill after they did it. +500 baht first time.

second time I went he had a wound from fighting with some dog, the wound it looked like it might be mange.. so I asked her to check with them if they knew if it was mange or not.. no answer, just took my dog out in the other room, cut a bit of skin off and said it wasn't and charged me 200 extra baht for it. (I didn't ask for that)

I told my friend that next time I only want the shots and nothing else and to tell them to ask me before doing something that they will bill me for.

friend started saying that I talked too much and.. you know the drill.

    +

last time i went to the dentist i had a cut in my mouth so i told him to be careful, he said i could get some cheap stuff from the pharmacy to help it heal (10-15 baht he said)

at the end, he picked up a blank piece of paper, wrote down the name of the medicine and told me to show it to the pharmacy.. then charged me 100 baht extra for that paper, I wasn't impressed. (no, it wasn't a prescription)

of course the amounts are negligible but a lot of people don't like to be nickle and dimed

i was adopted, the second adopted child in my new family. My new mother was widowed with two children and couldn't have any more. She remarried and her new husband wanted two of his own. They adopted a boy and a girl. Growing up we were as normal as any family and loyal to the end. Lots of half farang kids in orphanages, each cuter than the next. I visited with a Thai lady and then with my daughter, an award-winning actress, who put on a show for one of the classes. Try a visit. You will want more than one.

I thought the adoption process here was expensive and really drawn out? I might be wrong but i remember reading about it.

if it is, it's a shame.

    not working

    it's .go.th

    https://extranet.immigration.go.th/fn24online/

interestingly enough, if you click on it, it says "Login for FN hotel" and the registration page says FNHOTELREG which I assume means its for hotel registrations (heard of this before, was told people could not register, only if you had a hotel license)

or maybe its just not edited properly for purposes

  6. Transferwise is not an international transfer, it's a local transfer as you can see on the bottom right.

they take the money from you in the US to their US account and then turn around and transfer from their Thai account to you in Thailand, it's not an international transfer.

If that agent decide that it is acceptable, good for you but you might go next time and have another immigration agent that will refuse it.

I would assume that if you were to get a printout from your bank in the US as well showing the same amount being taken out (to reference with the TW PDF) then you might have more chances but YMMV.

Would it make you feel better if I said malicious content arrived on my laptop due to deception?

not really, not paying attention and agreeing to stuff isn't deception

and not sure how a homepage change is "malicious content"

here, 2 seconds search on google on how to change a homepage on Firefox

Set or change your home page
    1. Open a tab with the web page you want to use as your home page.
    2. Drag and drop that tab onto the Home button on your toolbar.
    3. Click Yes to set this page as your home page.

if that doesn't work, it's in options and Home and you put the page you want

  8. update: that didn't go as planned. my old battery (which was probably already damaged) sat in there 30 minutes or so..

then the UPS started to emit a continuous beep.. didn't know what it was about so unplugged from wall and battery connectors..

battery was exceptionally hot, it's STILL too hot to hold even after like 10 minutes outside on the balcony (so it doesn't blow up in my face)

so I will leave that battery alone for now, haha.

I would love to have something like Amorn Eletronics around where I live so I could ask them to sort this UPS out

Yeah Thais love pressing the buttons on other peoples bikes. The number of times I've found full beam on, adjustable levers adjusted etc. it does my head it.

If you're really stuck you can use a computer UPS, remove the battery from that and replace with your bike battery and leave it on for 24 hours. They constantly charge at a slow rate.

was too curious, went down and got the new retail box from the bike.

Storm Rider YTX-7L-BS 12V/7AH Maintenance Free battery. 800 baht from shop, 600 baht on shopee (without shipping), fair.

opened UPS, stripped cables, plugged them in, plugged UPS in and it made some jolt sound like it usually did.. it won't "turn on" but I think it's still charging even if it's not on

will leave that on 24h and send someone to get it checked

I think I might just take it to that electronic/electric shop and ask him if he can't take off the unnecessary parts for me

otherwise if the battery is total loss then i might just buy a second one just in case

yeah, I was looking into that yesterday.. as I actually have a broken UPS

would you reckon that a UPS is likely to work with a VRLA battery?

just worried because it said "NOTICE: To charge a VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) battery, a special (constant-voltage) battery charger is required. Using a conventional battery charger will damage the battery." in the owner manual

I don't know what that means.. tried to google it but figured i'd only replace the battery instead so I bought a bigger but different branded battery for 800 baht and tried to ask them if it was VRLA too but was getting nowhere.

will check the retail box tomorrow but I assume figuring out the UPS thing isn't that difficult.

I still have the old battery so might start with that and see what happens

14V is good for charging the battery....the keyless thing may be draining the battery overnight, there was a thread on here about it happening on the PCX ( also the side stand kill switch if it has one )

I imagine the Aerox  has LED  headlight, stop light etc  if not  maybe the high beam on and a stuck on brake light can  take enough power away from the charging circuit that slowly the battery doesn't get charged enough...that can build up sulphation which then starts a vicious circle of the battery not accepting enough charge which leads to more sulphation...or you could have just had a dud battery.

I did have a USB lighter charger adapter plugged in for the whole 10 days or so that it was parked, that included a USB cable but nothing charging on it

everything else turns off as soon as you put the peg down, lights, UI and everything.

however, I wouldn't be surprised if the guy that lives next door didn't screw around with it because he hates me (for no good reasons).. if he went and pressed  that keyless button nonstop to trigger the key check it probably would have killed the battery. (that's technically the only thing you can do without the key in pocket)

  12. yep the keyless thing if you don't know how it works is weird, especially when you lock the wheel (have to press the button, wait for the light and then can unlock - only for a few seconds) .. I tried it many times too quickly and thought it was Fd

I went ahead and got me a new different branded battery, they had a multimeter and my friend said it was only showing 10.x volts, my "charger" certainly didn't do it any favor I guess.

bike works fine, i found out when setting up the time correctly (went to 12:00 without a battery I guess) that I have a battery OSD.. it was showing 12.x volt on start and went up to 14v while idle/driving. I assume this means the alternator works but I will bring the bike for the pros to check in the next few days (hopefully this battery lasts that long, ha)

still need to figure out multimeter and small battery tender, we'll see if anyone has some recommendations for those.

  13. I got a practically new Yamaha Aerox ABS, two weeks ago

drove maximum 200 kilometers, 180 of them to drive the bike home

try to start the bike in the morning (ABS Aerox is keyless - press button, keyfob check and if found you can turn to on and e-start)

    I press the button, nothing.

I think this is the battery by the way: (not my picture)

    image.png.53588c1f4f1425be9b3c018738363290.png

"NOTICE: To charge a VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) battery, a special (constant-voltage) battery charger is required. Using a conventional battery charger will damage the battery."

i tried a regular 12v 2amp charger but it didn't seem to do nothing (will get it checked tomorrow)

now, I don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery so I decided I want two things:

a "battery tender" style charger that works with those VRLA batteries

    and

a proper multimeter so I can check the stuff by myself next time

had my eye on this Battery Tender Junior 12v 0.75amp from Amazon.com for about 1000 baht, but most if not all of them are 120 volt 60hz

I don't even know if those chargers would work on this VRLA battery (I know next to nothing about batteries) but all I know is that the charger I have.. it either did nothing to it or it messed it up more

I heard I should get a CTEK on Lazada but to be honest I don't understand why I could get a Battery Tender for 1000 baht or so but the smaller CTEK are 2500 baht.

I don't need something fancy, i just need something that works and to be honest, if the battery and bike alternator works then it will be used very rarely.

if someone would be able to point me to something decent (doesn't have to be CTEK)

just have to know that it works with those batteries. etc
