  1. I bought the curing salt there and made excellent ham and bacon using this recipe scaled down:

    Home curing a ham is quite safe, but you will need to get a hold of some insta cure #1 (also called pink salt or D.Q. curing salt, among other things). This ready to use curing salt is sold as a pre mixed combination of 93.75% salt and 6.25% nitrite. It is the nitrite that guards against the slim possibility of botulism, and also what gives ham its rosy pink finish. Nitrite in high concentrations is toxic, so measure carefully (but don’t be scared either!!!). You can find this curing salt in better supermarkets and specialty food stores.

    Step 1

    Buy a fresh ham leg (uncured pork), a half fresh ham, or a piece of fresh ham in whatever size you're comfortable with. I am using the term ham here to refer to the hind leg section of a pig - you must buy fresh, not already cured pork. The size doesn’t matter; buy it as big or small as you are comfortable with.

    Step 2

    Prepare the brine.

    I use a brine recipe from Michael Rhulman's book "Charcuterie" (which is excellent)

    · 2 liters of water

    · ¾ cup of kosher salt

    · 1 cup of brown sugar (1 packed cup)

    · 4 teaspoons of pink salt (insta cure #1) (4 teaspoons)

    Stir all ingredients together until dissolved. This brine can be multiplied as needed, and if you are doing a whole ham, you will probably need to double it.

    Step 3

    Place your pork in a bowl or pot that is large enough to hold the meat completely submerged in the brine, but one small enough to fit in your fridge. Add the cold brine to the pork, and lay a heavy plate on top of the floating meat to keep it submerged.

    Keep it in the fridge until done. It will cure at the rate of 2 pounds per day. A large ham will take about a week.

    Step 4

    Rinse it off and prepare it in any way you enjoy. This ham is better if smoked (see here for instructions on hot smoking a fresh ham) but you can just as easily bake it or fry off slices unsmoked, and it will still be great. It has become ham – it is done!

    For ham Roast in oven in tin foil at 180 Deg C until 71 deg c internal temp

    A last tip…if you find the ham too salty you can soak it in clean water in the fridge for a couple of hours to leach out some of the salt. I don’t tend to find that this is necessary.

    When you apply you need to be in Businees and need to travel plus you need a letter from your boss(that was me as self employed) saying you need to travel around those contries listed .

     

    It took 3months wait for HK and them 3 months wait to bounce it round other contries . I got them all except Malaysia...don't know why not them?

    Bought 1 kg Green pork Loin at Tesco used a simple sugar, salt, nitrite cure, left it in 4 days. cooked it at 180Deg C in oven in tin foil, excellent dry ham, but still uncured in the centre.

     

    Them bought 50 ml syringe in Pharmacy and injected brine into the centre of the next one, problem solved, but used pork hip meat from Makro, not so good taste and texture.

     

    Just cured the Green Pork loin again from Tesco and injected it over 4 days. Same roasting to an internal temp of 71 deg c and lo and behold perfect again!

      • Criteria for a Permanent Import of Used/Secondhand Vehicles 
    • An importer is eligible to import only ONE used/ secondhand vehicles for personal use.
    • In case where the importer is a nonresident, he/she is required to stay in Thailand for at least ONE year and present a non-immigrant visa issued by the Immigration Bureau, the National Police Office together with a work permit issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare at the time of importation.
    • In case where an importer is a Thai resident marrying a foreigner, he/she is required to present documentary evidence of marriage and proof of changing residence to Thailand. Also the importer has to own and possess the imported vehicle for at least one and a half year while staying abroad, from the date of transferring the ownership to the date of arrival into Thailand.
    • In case where an importer is a Thai resident, he/she is allowed to import a vehicle only when such vehicle is accompanied the owner on the change of residence and he/she has owned and possessed the imported vehicle together with the valid driving license for at least one and a half year while staying abroad.

    Thai's, when they move their household back to Thailand can import 1 car tax free as long as it has been in their name in the other country for more then 1 year.

     

    The import tax is around 320% of the value in What Car UK and some other site(check out the customs page, Perkins??) plus the CIF costs(carriage insurance and freight).I brought in an old Merc and managaed to sell it for more than all the costs I paid, but it was a struggle and I hated the bit when we had to interface with the slimy customs official!

    Can I just check on this.... Thais can import 1 car tax free if they own it for a  year?

     

    I ask this as I (british) have been considering bringing my 14 year old mercedes CLK 320 over with me when I move to thailand in 2015.

    I am married to a Thai national

     

    I have read many posts on here, some going back many , many years, and they all pretty much conclude with it not being worth it, with astronomical charges and corrupt customs officals , mostly resulting in you either leaving you car to them (presumably the plan) or paying silly money.

     

    My car is probably worth £2k only but is lowish milage (50k)and I would hate to part with it..However under no circumstances am i going to pay 3 or 4 times ( or more??) to import it.

     

    I was meaning to ask the forum if there was a way to ship it to another country and then drive it into Thialand, but now seeing your post think maybe there is another way.

     

    Would you suggest that if i transferred the car into my Wife's name now , that in  a years time I could ship to Thailand and pay no import taxes?

     

    I would love to hear more  on this

  7. In pattaya there is a guy named sompan who works for securitas alarm monitoring mob in pattaya. Sorry cant find his card at moment. Securitas bkk no is 021687400-1.

    He installed one in my place when we went through on rechecked all my earths etc. We also installed a new earth rod as the other rod and earths were not installed correctly. We also connected an men link in the consumer box that caused the safety cut to continuously trip. He persisted and contacted the saftey cut help line and we paitently worked out the problem and finished late in the day with everything working and tested. At 6pm it would have been easy for him to blame something else and remove the men link but he didnt. We also dug up the earth rod and tested leakage etc which again he didnt have to do unless he is a good tradesman. His rates are good and he has 2 of his family as apprentices. I give u this extra info as many contractors wouldnt make the effort he makes.

    He is not a qualified electrician and still joins earths but with connectors.

    He is one of the better contractors .

  8. Any electronic device will eventually fail over time.

    Once a Safe-T-Cut is installed, the installer should test it with the right equipment. To make sure it conforms to the manufactuers requirements. Once this is done, then a 5 year warrantee should be good. However these devices need to checked on a regular basis, most manufactuers recommend every 3 months, after the initial test, using the test button. After 5 years the device should be tested thoroughly with the right test equipment. Then tested every 2 years after that.

  9. Hi folks,

    bought and installed a safe-t-cut 5 years ago when I moved in. Has worked fine, but now after installing a 6kW water heater my Thai "electrician" says it has died.

    Is this possible, I thought these things were supposed to last a lifetime?

    Or is he just trying to annoy me?

    (he already wrongly wired up to my old water heater connection as follows:

    Earth green to red wire

    Live red to white wire

    and neutral black to black wire

    he also refused to use terminal connector saying they will melt and catch fire!

    so I don't have a lot of confidence in him ( he now has changed the wires to the correct colours after I refused to pay if he didn't!)

    But seriously do Safe-t Cuts die after a period of use??

    I don't suppose you have their GPS location do you?

    Not accurately, but must be near 12.918456, 100.914623, but have a picture from Google street maps!
