  1. We have a right to an opinion

i once had an argument with a thai about my right to an opinion, and he became very quiet when i pointed out i pay more tax in this country annually than he had his entire life.

but as others have pointed out, this is a discussion of negligence resulting in the death of a child. it is one of those things where a simple procedure undertaken by a responsible adult could have saved a life.

In terms of negligence though i don't think this is even vaguely on par with the children left in school vehicles to slow roast.

my child got into a van every morning. the teacher opened the door from the seat nearest it, the children sat in the rear seats.

i was happy with that arrangement, because i got to see her get in the van safely every day.

i opted to pick her up though.

the sad thing is, you have to offer up a certain level of trust, or you risk packing them in gauze and denying them a life.

my daughter is unlikely to experience the world i grew up in, where at the age of 6 i would walk out the door with friends and faff about until dinner unsupervised. i used to walk about 3k to school at her age and thought nothing of it. if i wre to tell her she was getting to school under her own steam here she would be terrified.

under todays culture of fear, my parents could have been considered negligent.

  2. Like many other comments on this thread, mine are just speculation:

I speculate that a 3 year old is not strong enough to open the van door. I'll speculate that the van door was never properly closed in the first place. I speculate that the van door slid open under the vans movement and the little girl tried to keep it closed and fell out.

    Issues here:

A School Van carrying infants without child seats, seat belts or child locks on the doors.

An infant cannot be responsible or blamed for falling out of a moving vehicle. The only adult present must be accountable for this, as mush those who permitted the child to ride in a vehicle unsafe for a child in the first place.

Recently: A friend of my Wife had her 5 year old run 10m across the car park to us. He'd unbelted himself from the car seat and opened the door. I had to get my Wife's friend to engage the child locks there and then in front of me...

It does seem to me that there are too many tragic stories all of which originate from a basic lack of responsibility, which in itself stems from a lack of accountability.

i would say that you are spot on, the door opening under acceleration. a grade 6 student (12 or 13 year old child) in charge. poor bastard.

  3. My daughter starts school next year. There will be no van rides in her future.

my daughter took the van every day for 2 years until we changed to a school with no van service.

every morning one of the teachers was in the van manning the door.

there is no way in hell a 3 year old can open a van door.

my kid is 6 and she would have a hard time moving the door, let alone even popping the lock.

I cant even imagine getting that phonecall

  4. Check the land title Chanote at land office against owners details, in theory if any loan is attached land office will not sanction transfer until this is paid. If markers are missing have them come and remeasure so you are sure exactly what you are buying. No need to hire a lawyer for this. The lease can also be registered on Chanote without use of lawyer, however you will need to trust your wife on this or have a friend that reads Thai....alternatively yes you could engage the use of a lawyer and their fees will be in the region of 30,000 baht. If you are buying through an agent, they will/should do due diligence for you and assist at the land office also at no cost to you.

Maybe some due diligence on the realtor you choose to use would be the first thing to do.

Of course, just the same as you would a dive instructor if you were taking PADI, or teachers if you were having English lessons for your kids or anything else you do.smile.png

    what?

  5. I think the point is they don't care what he did. (In reality neither do I, and neither did Prince Harry of the UK, and the uniforms look pretty snappy)

I'm sorry, but are you really saying you don't care what hitler did?
Don't care at all, nor do I care what Genghis Khan, Slobodan Milosevic, Stalin, the Japanese, the IRA, Pol Pot, et al did.

It's in the past, forgive and forget.

Words of wisdom, live for the now. Hitler was years ago and this is Thailand.

Teenagers are rebellious - I wore a swastika t-shirt 30 years ago as Sid Vicious did.

Personally, I'd be more offended if it were Maggie Thatcher's head on the Colonel Saunders guy.

It's only a little shop-house 'gai thot' restaurant anyway.

i would be more concerned if they were committing hate crimes rather than serving chicken

  6. this "news" item is such a load of old <deleted>.

the "journalist" concerned rehashed old photos from an unrelated story and could not even be arsed to get a photo of the place while it was open, let alone have words with the proprietor.

yet we are 14 or 15 pages on in a discussion about nothing.

Well your posts have certainly contributed nothing... Move along, Joe, if you think it's <deleted>. It seems many others are interested.

tom, do you not believe that a conscientious reporter would have actually stopped by the place when it was open?

  7. "If you want to bash other countries that you don't like, star a new thread. While your at it do some research of facts. Look at Belgium's record in the Congo, how the US treated Native Americans, the Turks treatment of Armenians, Russia's record against Poles, Cossacks and even deliberate starving of its own people; France's record in North Africa and French Indo-China, etc etc"................ha ha ha ha ha

Do as I say, not as I do !

And joeaverage, I am beginning to think that some of your comments are very "average"

thanks mike, i appreciate your attention.

having read your contribution to the thread, it is great to see what an exceptional poster like yourself can achieve with just a few words.

it is good to have that gold standard to aspire to.

  8. really i do comprehend.

it does not alter reality one bit.

the story itself is nonsense, a recycling of old news.

i personally could not give a shit what a thai with a chicken shop does or does not think about hitler, nor do i see what a couple breasts and a drumstick have to do with anything.

i see racist vitriol on this site daily that i find more offensive.and that comes from folk who claim to know better.

    ignorance is a bliss

call it ignorance, i have other things more worthy of my time.

hitler was one man. He had an entire country behind him including my mother, grand parents, aunts and uncles.

thing is, i don't believe hitler actually personally ever gassed a jew, that was actually done by individual germans.

    perhaps i should boycott schnitzel.

southern fried chicken? wasn't the american south built on slave labour?

  9. Condolences to the man's family and friends...

As for the BIB, blunt force blow to the back of the head and items missing from his home...

How "murky" is that likely to be that the poor soul was done in by someone...

one would hope the murkiness came in terms of motive. the blunt force trauma is suggestive of foul play (murder or manslaughter), however police are unsure whether robbery or something else was the motive.

that be how i read it.

  10. see

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/651361-german-businessman-found-dead-in-udon-thani-flat-police-believe-it-is-a-possible-murder-case/page-2#entry6578905

    to make the problem happen:

select a block of nested quotes

add your text outside quote tags

try to post -- receive too many quotes warning

in edit mode (not wysiwig) take out the central quote (the quote where the opening and closing tags are closest together)

    save.

the result is the example above and cannot be corrected by editing, it just seems to keep adding closing rags

i have reproduced this after it was deleted by a mod as i was editing, let us just hope the same mode does not delete the example again

  11. That's the spirit.

These threads so often turn into a pissing contest to see who can live on less, I just thought I'd open the bidding at 300K.

That covers rent at the Quattro, 200/20 ultra high speed internet, http://www.absolutefitfood.com/ for when I eat in, Iron Fairies or Maggie Choos for when I don't, cocktails at Grease in soi 49, a permanent VIP table at Bash on soi 11 for when I feel like slumming 'til 7am and 12 grams of 60% pure Peruvian flake each month.

I can't begin to imagine how anyone could survive on less

    where you getting your flake?

  12. Dumping babies is a regular thing in Thailand. Normally they are put in a plastic bag and left in a bin to die. I've seen/read about quite a few in recent months, on various websites

And if this happened to a litter of soi dogs, Thais would be in an uproar screaming animal cruety. Do it to a new born human and hardly a sniffle.

i'm not sure what you hoped to achieve with this statement. besides being patently ridiculous it assumes that there has been no uproar over the exposure of this child
