  1. They seem to make it hard for ops wife. My wife did tvs 10 hours and the driving test was once around the car park. He said can you reverse park? She said yes so she drove straighbin and he said close enough, herds your licence. I then took her for a drive and at 60 klm tried to go around a 90 deg corner with no braking. Yes we landed in the ditch. We went to oz and it took 1 year of weekly lessons and a lot of study to pass the written test. She now knows how to drive safely.

  2. Udon has all the fast food chains but if the op travels to smaller Villages, not much luck in isaan. If he wants to experience the real isaan, get a taste for thai food as the only thing that comes close here are donuts, which are the best I've ever had, ask my scales. Lol

  3. totser, how do u nknow thats him n the avatar?

    secondly, i stayed in someone's aprt. for a few days , i had met them here on the forum;

thirdly, ive put people that ive never met before, up in my apartment in kibbutz, they were foreigners doing a north/south hiking trail that runs through here. anyone willing to put up with -at the time- two boxers had to be ok...

you dont have to translate or entertain. its sort of like cheap ecotourism...

in this type of situation , you dont have to entertain. you provide a place to sleep, and basically, you turn the person loose to do whatver they want, you benefit only by having unusual and interesting people as your guest for a day or so.

to the OP maybe you should look into biking /cycling groups or something like that , you might find people willing to put you up for a night or so...

A little different as OP mentions he is wanting to live not pass through.

  4. So here I am , I see a thread about where is it good to live in Issan, I think to my self ," this should be interesting,"  I like to know where it would be good to live in Issan.

I know , I should know better, Posted Image call it a momentary lapse in judgement, so I read on................ this is not only true of this thread,

many of These Threads have a tendency To deteriorate in directions other than what the OP had in mind, and I think it is important for the Moderators to quickly bring it back in line. Including my complain about "out of context replies"

let'ch not talk about that, if we need to, then some one could start a new thread, or revive one of the hundreds on the subject

I am sure the OP has by now abandoned this Thread,  all he wanted to know was where it is good to live in Isaan

.  let me first say, that "Good " is a subjective term, subject to what one considers good

.For me Good " is where my wife's family is, I they were in Udon Thani, "good" would had being there, As it is, they are from Khom Kaen, so that's where "good " is for me.

Family is very important with in Thai culture.and it is important to me. If it is important to you, them that should be a first consideration.

Thai culture is important, but let's face it. we are not Thai. so it would be important to also consider, how much of your culture are you willing to give up at this time,

Khon Kaen offers me the opportunity nit only , be near my Thai family,

but when I need to, be able to participate in Farang culture, world class shopping, good restaurants, though I have not used it yet, I understand , good hospitals. and easy in and out, via bus or airplane, strategical located for short trips to Laos or BKK and for when I feel my inner Thainess, the rice fields or Dads farm is only a few minutes away

Over all. for me, I would say Khon Kaen is a good place.

Siri I feel the same. Family, culture and convenience. For these reasons I am close to Nong Han but without the western shops, Udon Thani is an easy 30 klm from me with easy access. I always remember I am a visitor and respect the local values and fit in quite nicely with the locals. Country life suits my fly in fly out farming practices for now until retirement later in life. Where ever you are, learn who's who in the zoo, respect, shop local, employ locals and a good life will be had. Good luck to all with with happiness and peace.

  7. RGS, finally an intelligent reply. So many arrogant , self centred responses. I suppose that's why a lot of farangs here stay away from other farangs as they finally realised that getting bitch slapped in their own country that they should live a solitude life in the sticks here.

  8. Little village life is great if you have a few farangs to clear your thought and get the right info needed as locals don't want to lose face so the answers are generally don't know just in case their wrong. To hard basket is 90 % of the questions one asks. Search, search and search again, then life will be a lot easier.

It comes all to the point from where the farangs come. I have a few farang friends and we meet twice a year for a BBQ but I normally stay away from farangs that just settle down in Isaan with their new found love from Pattaya.

Lucky me met my wife in oz after her worldly travels working. Then I was introduced to Thailand. She sees the big picture of life and taught me a lot, especially appreciating what we have , and wasn't just the $$$. But love my month or two in nth thai each year.

  9. Haha, the squat toilet was the first thing to go. I totally agree, it is what you make of it where ever you are, but it does help a huge amount with this forum to find what one needs to be more comfortable for the lifestyle you choose. Thanks participants and thanks thaivisa.
