Hello @ian carman. Most foreigners can open a bank account in Thailand using just their passport as identification. However if you hold a temporary or visit visa, a bank may ask for a 'certificate' from the British Embassy. Please contact the bank/branch to check if one of the following documentary services we provide may be acceptable:

    • Certified copy of a British Passport
    • Affirmation of Residency

Further information on the services we provide are available from Gov.UK at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/notarial-and-documentary-services-guide-for-thailand.

Is a certificate of residency from immigration acceptable rather than a proof from the embassy?

Unless it's changed, the main hassle I had was that most of the documents they want are PDF files but they want them as JPG. If it's just one page, you can take a photo or screen shot, but it's harder for multipage documents (like insurance and the hotel booking.)

There are lots of websites that let you convert PDF to JPG online for free, or you can download 'universal document converter', which installs as a printer and you print to file and create a JPG that way.

For multipage documents I use this website https://www.filesmerge.com/merge-jpg which merges multiple JPGs into a single long JPG.

No wonder arrivals are down haha

Even if you manage to get to Isan safely be prepared for 14 days of home quarantine. Every arrival from other provinces must be reported to the local village chief. This was the case with a family member who came back from an other province as the jobs dried up there. He wasn't allowed to leave the village for 2 weeks and nurses/medical staff came every day to check body temperature/symptoms and take photos of everyone around.

That’s what I was afraid of didn’t want to spend 14 days with no clean water ,sanitation etc

Had same problem 5 years ago phone international pension office it seems a problem to pay so they reduced my state pension for 3 months to take the money owed no tax code change, also remember that your pension is frozen at todays rate with no fuel payments etc so if you are eg in thailand 10 in years time your pension will still be at todays rate.

It will be interesting if they apply the same rules to expats living in former eu countries .If not a clear case of discrimination and I can see lawsuits.

no brits have ever been stranded, unless they had no money for a flight or a medical condition preventing them from flying, flights have always been available in the price range 450GBP - 650GBP, or they they could reschedule their existing flight.

i dont know why anyone would claim to be stranded when they clearly weren't.

Loads of people were panicking about visa extensions and the airport closing for April but as you say there was always flights back to the uk

don't count on that, they are running more and more European destinations direct from TPE.  Its only a matter of time before they drop BKK altogether, as not enough originating passengers to make it workable.

There are 200 empty seats on the weekend flight so it is a bit of a concern as I’m not leaving until may

No one disembarks because they are empty as per this extract from the EVA website :-

    Updates on Europe Routes

    • Flights between Taipei and Vienna/Amsterdam will be temporarily suspended until the end of April.
    • Flights between Taipei and London
      • Starting from March 21, flight BR68 departing from London, which was originally flying to Taipei with a layover in Bangkok, will be flying directly to Taipei. The departure time remains unchanged at 9:20 pm.
      • Starting from March 22, flight BR67 departing from Taipei will not be carrying passengers for the Taipei–Bangkok segment.

I’m not leaving until may so hopefully enough Brits stay here until then so that the flights are full enough to be economically viable
