  1. Yeah thanks but I'm not looking for a pub meal (even a gastro one), as its a big celebration for a table of 12 and am happy to splash out as it's Christmas day. When you consider the scope and scale of the top hotel brunches in Phuket (lobster, various seafood, yes foie gras, steaks, turkey etc etc., and the free flowing good quality wine and cocktails) then the cost of around 2500B is in my view a bargain, in fact a steal.

We are currently looking at Cape Yamu (Como) or Banyan Tree. Both menus look fantastic.

  2. I am looking for suggestions for a top class Xmas lunch buffet in the northern part of the island (say north of Kamala) preferably around Laguna area.

I know the Slate (former Indigo Pearl) has a very good one, and looking for something similar to that level of quality

Any of you brunchers out there got any suggestions?

Well spotted, stuarty. I particularly like your first link, where there two signs at each side of the road. One sign is correctly pointing towards Nai Thon, but the sign at the other side of the road claims that Nai Thon is located in the opposite direction!

What could the people who installed these signs have been thinking? "Yes, travel East to go to Nai Thon Beach. Or West. Up to you".

I know, and its been the situation for years, and nobody's done anything, e.g. any of the hoteliers, or any restauranteur etc.,  at either end.

  4. On the coastal road from Layan to Naithon (the Trisara road) there are similar large blue signs which on the way going north (after leaving Layan) say "Layan Beach", and on the way south, after Nai Thon, say "Nai Thon Beach". They have simply put up the wrong signs at the time of installing about 3 years ago, and no official has done anything about it since then. If you are a tourist, you will be hopelessly lost and confused.

This is after leaving Naithon heading south to Layan

And this is at Trisara heading north just before Nai Thon Beach

    There are several more

This is as you come towards Laguna near Layan gardens/ Phuket Pavilions

It's pathetic that (a) someone presumably signed off on the work after installation - the signs are also in Thai - , and (b) nobody's bothered to fix it.

  5. Chief of the Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor) MaAnn Samran added, “Surin Pubilc Park will be built using a budget of B12mn.

I can confirm that once complete no vendors will be allowed in the park. There will be no shops for people to buy anything,”

He forgot to add "However, the car park will continue to be fully occupied by hawkers as normal..."

  6. The answer is as follows:

There has been virtually no follow up enforcement following initial clearance, hence the creeping back of encroachment and commercial facilities on the sand of Bangtao and Layan beaches etc. They will never go away.

However the situation is different at Surin. Clearance was 100% and it has been widely touted as the "King's park beach" and is high profile. The big clubs (Catch etc) and even small vendors know there is no future in encroachment there and will not risk spending a bean. They just occupy the car park instead.

Currently stuck in the queue - been here almost an hour and about half way through the zigzag lanes. I have seen about 5 immigration booths in operation by I cannot confirm - hard to see across the sea of heads.

I was there last night at that time waiting for my son arriving from HK. He texted me at 11.40pm to say 400+ people in front of him in the snaky line, and what the flippin heck?. I told him to look for a shorter line, if any. He went to the "Visa on Arrival" line at one end and was asked for and paid 100B and through in 5 minutes. Result.
