  1. Chiang Rai, even if you stay in a hotel WITHIN Chiang Rai province!

Were you fined in CR for this? Did they really instruct to do new TM30 everytime you return your residence from a hotel? Or is your residence a hotel as well? That might explain the confusion. Maybe you should have shown the instructional video on Youtube released by immigration about TM30 to them when getting fined.

and everthing else that follows section 38.

If it had anything todo with the TM6 then hotels wouldn't need todo TM30 too... Doesn't matter if you stay in a hotel or private home, they want to know where you are.

That is not true. Bangkok does no such nonsense. Actually very few people have been fined in Bangkok for TM30. Some still lately got yearly extensions approved in BKK and have never done TM30.

It's not the 90 day report alone. It's that Thailand hasn't figured out that maybe there's an easier and more convenient way to establish where someone lives, especially when you've been living in the same damned house for the last 20 years. It's also that foreigners are the ones that are being forced to make the "landlord" comply with the TM-30 report, and that this report has to be refiled everytime you stay overnight in another province. Again, it is the foreigner who most often is being fined if the report is not properly filed, not the landlord. It's also highly aggravating because the 90 day report and TM-30 (both of which are intended to establish where a foreigner is living) are totally redundant forms. One is filed by the foreigner, the other (supposedly filed by a Thai landlord, but more often than not filed by the foreigner as well) is supposed to "confirm" the accuracy of the 90 day report. Because the 90 day report follows a 90 day interval after you enter the country or since your last 90 day report, and the TM-30 report has to be filed within 24 hours of entering the country or following an overnight stay in another province, the filing of these two reports follow separate time tables, and can necessitate incessant reporting to immigration if you travel frequently. Instead of designing a reasonable reporting program which is easy to understand and comply with, immigration has this totally inefficient (not just for foreigners, but for immigration officers) system which is exhausting to comply with, inhibits travel, and results in poor compliance. This poor compliance has provided plenty of opportunities for levying fines and penalties, which unfortunately is why there appears to be little incentive to simplify the system.

Can you please name the Immigration Office that today requires new TM30 "following an overnight stay in another province"? This has been asked at Immigration Offices around the country over and over again and they always instruct new TM30 needed only if new TM6, new entry to this country, not travel within the country.

  4. I had a valid TM-30.  That wasn't good enough for the "family desk".  We gave up on the 3rd visit, when they insisted the landlord fly back to Thailand, to make a trip to the amphoe for a "newer version" house-book copy.  They were going to come visit anyway, so was not a question of "If we really lived there."  Our witness was the security guard from the condo - where we had been living for Years at the time.  It was nothing but a scam-attempt - so I went and got a Visa, instead.

Sorry to hear that. I had no idea Pattaya was so difficult about marriage extensions. It’s not even a TM30 issue. But now, with the TM30 done, it’s not enough for the extension docs. Very weird.

I've been doing that as well, but my local office won't accept it (sans bribe) unless I also have proof the income is "from a state pension."  Other offices don't play that card to avoid granting the extension, but may play other cards.

If renting, before applying for a marriage-based extension, be sure your landlord will provide signed-by-him copies of:

    • His ID
    • His Housebook
    • The Housebook of where you rent
    • The Chanote of where you rent
    • Rental Contract

Move, if necessary, to get a landlord that will supply these, or some offices will use lack of them to deny an extension.  None of this is necessary if using an agent, of course - or even proof of income/money - but best to have independent-proof you are legit, separate from whatever an agent "works out" with the IO.

You may decide to use an agent, even if your application is legit, to save multiple trips for "extra made-up requirements," or protect your wife from being verbally-abused by the IO - treated like a traitor to her country by marrying you and "letting another farang in."

    And where do you live?

In Bangkok, many tenants have managed TM30 report done by themselves only with a rental contract. And it doesn't even come with abuse.

Perhaps, though they also want a ticket into Thailand. I am not sure whether they want to ensure people are getting a visa to use it, or want to make sure people are planning to fly to Thailand rather than travelling in by land.

That is very possible but I would hope a land ticket with Cambo visa in this case to be the answer. I was making a point that non-imm visas are not required to actually know when they will leave again. Very different from tourist visa category.

My recent planning for a similar trip, fly in HCMC and return to Thailand by land involves a dilemma for qualifying the free 15 days on arrival at HCMC for which a flight out is usually asked for. What kind of bus ticket could be booked online for HCMC to PP and what if I prefer to use a taxi? I suppose it's best to get the Cambo visa in BKK beforehand.

HCMC single entry ticket needs flight tickets out, but MEV for marriage dies not need flight tickets out? Money in bank required, or appointment needed? Did you have a history of visa extensions in passport already?

Generally, there are no booked ticket out requirement for any of the Non-Imm type visa stays whether single or multiple entry by the immigration in Thailand. It would make a little sense for the consulate to require that. Tourist visas are not meant for long term stays so must show a booking for a ticket out.

  8. Thanks for your report! It was nice to read about your experience in Vietnam. It sounds like that Ho Coc area is just a nice beach taken over by beach resorts and has very little besides that to see and do. Vung Tau just a bit south from there is a quiet town with markets by a nice and sometimes even busy beach. It can be reached directly by a boat from HCMC. Nha Trang Is a bit bigger town with beach tourism. My favorite area so far is most definitely the Danang area beaches farther north though. Those have easy access to historically interesting Hoi An and Hue. Anybody been to Phu Quoc island in the south next to Cambodia?

  9. Talking of Big C, I was in there today and the cashier wanted my passport number to give me a discount. I couldn't work out why she needed that, why she'd already scanned my Big C card. I gave her my pink Thai ID card number instead.
It wasn't until I got home I realised that I didn't get the discount.
I called the Big C call centre to ask about it. They said they needed ID in order to give me back some of the money I'd already spent with them. Apparently some customers have been using other customer's Big C cards?
The very helpful girl at the call centre spoke excellent English and asked for my ID so they could update my details. I gave her my Thai ID again.
She called back later and said the ID number kept being rejected for some reason (checksum failure?), so checked it with me again. I had given her the correct number.
She asked if I could email them a copy of my Thai ID, passport, and Big C card. I said I decided it wasn't such a good idea for a company to request so much personal information, especially as I was a customer spending my money in their store, and they didn't need all this information.
Ended up that they'll keep an old passport number (I gave them years ago when I applied for the Big C card) on file and to use that number.
There seems to be so many companies wanting too much personal information in order to buy their products.

Just go to update your name and ID number with the pink card at BigC customer service. No need for old passport. When your data is changed on membership card you will get a sms confirmation.

  10. You say your name is in Thai script. Did they translate your name upon application or is it in Thai because your documents in the application already had the Thai name?

Mine is in English and due for renewal (I heard you get 1 year to renew it from the expiry?) in October. All that info stored for an emergency is a great idea and actually a step ahead of Australia. I do wonder though if it will just be another good idea that falls by the wayside and gets forgotten about. The I Lert You app is a good example of that.

My name is in thai script cos I used my pink ID card at DLT. It can be issues after you are issued a yellow tabien baan book for registering your permanent address in Thailand. To do that census registration you must have your passport translated to Thai. It’s best to find out yourself what is the closest and best Thai transliteration for your and your parents’ names for this process. Then you will be able to advice the translator the get it as correct as possible.

Renewing a temporary 2 year DL to permanent 5 year DL can be done one year before the expiration date. Tje permanent 90 days prior.

As debated previously, there is no consistency at DLT offices.

There are those who's licences are purely in English on the front, but address in Thai on the reverse, even though they had a Tabien Baan and Thai ID card.

That is the way Immigration writes Residence Certificates. Address in Thai, name in English.

The information change for DL costs 5o thb extra. Maybe they wanted to save that so didn't change anything.

  12. The advantage of using Passport and tabien baan is then the DL is bi-lingual with both Thai ID and passport numbers. A bank or other entity may only have your PP number, etc. Pink cards are all Thai. So,  better to include your PPN and foreign name.

When we think Thai are silly for ask for something, often they are looking for specific information, which we may not understand if we can't speak their language, then we are the silly ones.

There is only one kind of ID number in the DL. It cannot be the both.

When we speak the thai language we find out who the silly ones are in the government office and why not else where.

I find it very strange how so many people like to participate in this topic “Thai ID Card for Aliens” and give ways and reasons for not using it. Just like in another thread many people were convinced, and still are that their travel document should stay in the safe in their house while they travel using various copies of it. Very strange indeed.

  13. As you took your passport, you should have used it. Then you would have had photo ID with your passport number on it, which can be used for certain things like boarding a domestic flight, or at the bank. However, carry on taking your passport as it's not heavy.[emoji19] be careful you don't lose it.

I didn’t use the passport for specifically those reasons. I like my Thai identity and there are few personal experiences here to read about using it. So no problems so far and will keep opening new topics on those. BTW, no bank should accept DL as it is not official ID. I use my pink ID with my ID-13 accounts. For domestic flights we know DL is commonly accepted. I don’t see why that would change for me with ID-13. There is no PP number in a domestic ticket. Hotels, we will see if it makes any difference.. I would guess not. It is the TM6 they should report if done correctly for TM30.

If I would lose my passport I would get a new one. I do scan my recent stamps and can print them to show at Imm. It’s not that big deal to loose your sleep over.

  14. This has already been mentioned a few times in this thread.

Did you take your passport to the office?

Didn’t you read my report? I said passport was never mentioned renewing the DL.

Yes, I did take my passport with me. I expected that the law would require the DLT to check my (non) immigrant status. I also carry my original marriage cert, copies of my wife’s docs, my childrens’ docs, my condo ownership docs and other copies I might need in my documents folder. I can assure you it’s not that heavy nor difficult.

  15. Tabien Baan for proof of address, but Passport for proof ID probably.

The name and address will always be in Thai and English, with either a Tabien Baan or Certificate of residence as the proof.
The ID number will be different depending on whether you used your Passport or Thai ID card.

    1. Wrong. If only passport used there is no Thai name in DL only English

    2. Wrong. ID-13 could have been copied from TB just as you assumed in number 1 for the thai name to be copied from TB. But that is not the case always.

Please let flexiomike to tell us what he did.

only yellow book, my friend didn't have the pink id card, I'm due in January but will get pink first but go to Klaeng not Rayong.

I got mine in Klaeng with just the yellow book,  no problem

In that case you must have used your passport for photo id? Does your DL now have your name in Thai and English? And your passport number or the ID-13 digits?

  17. So, I recently got my permanent 5 year license, with my name in Thai and 13-digit ID number, with the new format and qr code and registered it to the DLT app. The app's functionality is a pleasant surprise! I am able to store there my emergency details, wife's name and number, blood group, insurance policy numbers, preferred hospitals and organ donation plans etc! Amazing! It can also be used to report an accident. The data will supposedly show up after anyone scanning my license. The app also displays both of my licenses. I know the DL is not an official ID but this seems even better option than a photo/scan to identify my self around the country. One question remains though. Will the police accept the app for license now for both car and motorbike? All I know that when the app was released the police tried to ignore it. What is the current situation?

I think the 1st Class insurance will cover damage to your own property even if you are deemed at fault, whereas 3rd Class only covers third party damage.

The policy definitely looks odd though...

I always assumed that if a Motorcycle crashes into my car and causes 1MB+ damage he won't be able to afford the damages - but thats down the the insurance to sort out, my own 1st class Insurance 'should' pay for the damage and then chase up any 3rd parties themselves and I guess take them to court if necessary.

And that's why they always try to make the car to take the blame. Even the local motorbike has no license or compulsory insurance, nothing,  they are never suggested to be in fault. Easiest scenario for everyone. That is usually seen as fair. You must take it to court if you want to find out the truth, if it matters.

OP has a good point there. If he doesn't want to insure his own ride and already has a good accident cover he doesn't really need a private insurance for the vehicle. A different driver and the other passengers come to mind though.

Do you have to fill in a form for a 5-year renewal?
I (and Thais) in Udon Thai just given a copy of house registration and ID per licence, the staff do everything else.

Yes, name must be filled in by hand on the vision test form. The main page of application is a printout which must be signed.

There are different kinds of forms though for different things and if you want to use pink ID card it would make sense to know how to write your name. It should be a requirement for getting one in my opinion.

  20. Can I ask at which DLT you do the new 5 year DL?
Last time I was at Mo-Chit and they also used the yellow book and everything, but still wanted the passport as well so on the driver license is the passport number..

There are four DLT locations in Bangkok. I think its possible to use any office though in the country. No matter what your permanent address is. It’s also best to learn to write your name in thai in the applications.

Thanks, as I thought it would be but where did they get the English version of your name from ?

Probably from the driving licence application form you filled in. It would also be on file in their computer records from your previous application.

Edited 21 minutes ago by sumrit

I filled everything in thai only, the application and medical cert. The name in english was in the previous license. Good question though as the english name must be inputed in the system for the first time as well.

The first desk at DLT prints out the complete application and it has my name in thai and english. And everyting else in only thai.

    Thanks for the report.

Interested to know, on license is your name in Thai and English or Thai Thai, . And is your pink ID number on license instead of passport number ?

Yes, the new format is name in thai/english, birthdate in thai/english and last is my ID number 13 digits. All the data was copied straight away from my ID card, also my new address was updated without need to mention. Data change is charged extra 50 thb. No questions asked. It only seemed the last officer had not read the latest memo/instructions for this. But all she had to do was input it in the system.

  23. Happy to report to you all that I have successfully extended my 2 year driving license to a permanent 5 year DL in Bangkok this week by presenting only my pink ID and the yellow Tabien Baan. Passport was not even mentioned and the service was all smiles. Would have been a perfect day but the final officer, I guess the highest ranking, who prints the cards and takes photos demanded to see my workpermit, quite rudely too. I just laughed at her and said I have never worked in Thailand. Maybe she meant to ask my tabien baan but didn't even bother to look at the photo copies, the complete application. Quite a display of incompetence from her. I have grown used to it though. Every government office always seems to have somebody who just rudely demands passport and work permit from everyone and just loves to boss people around. Or maybe WP is the only thing they can say. Same story with the banks.. Well, it was a successful use of the day, most of it anyway.

What I found odd was that nobody even bothered to check if I am in the country legally.

BTW, renewing temporary licenses requires a medical certificate. Renewing the permanent ones does not.
