  1. Eat what you like. Fried chicken isn't healthy food anyway. In any case, KFC (Kentucky) and KFC (Korean) are NOT the same product just because both are made of chicken and fried. Even cheaper to buy some chicken at Tesco and build a bonfire. I don't think the point of this thread is to always seek the cheapest of any generic food product. Perhaps another thread. Thank you.

No, the point of this thread in your own words is to 'review' a restaurant.

Surely part of the 'review' process is to discuss the prices of a particular restaurant?

I'm no cheap Charlie (sometimes I wish I was to be honest) but that Korean gaff is well overpriced. Period.

    PP Out.

  2. OK, Korean Fried Chicken fans ... try all these supposed places that have it including Bonchon, compare price and tastes, and please report back here!

If the Korean place near Fairtex is the same place that I think it is, I seriously doubt they really have this specialty dish.

Actually years ago I saw a place that probably had it. It was not in a visible place. It was a specialty shop for chicken but everything was in Korean, the prices were much more expensive than Bonchon (perhaps because they were only selling whole chickens), and wasn't able to communicate with them well enough to try it. No pictures and nobody eating there to point at stuff. Not sure if they're still there. Doubt it.

In Korea, traditionally this was a BAR food.

In the USA, where it is now trendy, it is positioned as a premium price fried chicken with the justification that it is more labor intensive to cook than western fried chicken. Which it is.

But I think the flavor elements are a big part in differentiating different outlets.

“it is positioned as a premium price fried chicken ”

I can see how this works in America but I wonder about here. Sure, people are going there now because it's still a bit of a novelty. But how many will not think it's worth paying a premium for subsequent visits?

Last night through the window I watched as a well dressed middle-aged couple (Thai lady and farang husband ) wandered up and looked at the menu outside and he was fascinated by the facade. It was clear he wanted to come inside but it seemed clear she was explaining to him the prices were too high and in the end she convinced him against it.

How many Thai’s will pay premium prices for chicken (and the service charge) and even if they do go the first time how many will go back again?

I agree with you. Way too expensive for what is basically a bit of chicken. It was nice, but by the time you have a drink and add on the ridiclous 17% they charge you just can't justify it. If you are with the other half you are paying over 500 baht just to both sit there and eat some chicken, you could get a bargain bucket in KFC for that. Madness.

  3. Escuse me for going off topic, but could someone take a little time to explain to me why a man married to a Thai would need a multiple-entry visa? Why not just get the regular Non-Imm O, after 90 days extend it for the rest of the year, and then extend it annually after that? If you need to travel abroad you get a re-entry permit when you need it. The advantage would be that you build up continuous legal residence time that is required if you apply for permanent resicence. I would think that using multiple entry visas you have to start over again every time you cross the border. That doesn't make sense to me, so could somebody straighten me out?

Because it's a lot easier and much less painful to get a Non 'O'

    Is that you straightened out?

  4. Just to answer the Ops question about 365 Sport coverage and the EPL - ignoring all the other offerings out there.

I pay just 300 baht per month for 365 Sport as they had an offer about a month ago to pay for 6 months (also 12 months) up front at the reduced rate.

I use it for the EPL, but also get some of the Championship games - I am a Forest fan.

Apart from the games on the last day of the season, when there are 10 games all at the same time, then I get to see all the EPL games Live.

The midweek games I tend to watch the next day as they are on at 2 or 3 am - and unless it is a game I am really interested in, then I don't get up!

You have 5 or 6 days to watch the games, however watching the next day is best, before you know the score.

The picture quality is good. I suspect there are people who will say it is not as good as system XYZ?, however I have lived through the era of raster scan displays - certainly pre-HD etc... so I am perfectly happy with the quality.

365Sport are at the mercy of their providers however - often Astra - so sometimes (rarely), the game may not be shown until the second half (a previous live event over-runs), or for some reason the game is not shown due to equipment faults at Astra ( there was a fire at the office with the Astra server a few weeks ago) and of course when their own equipment fails. They are good at fixing problems up until about midnight I have found, but after midnight I don't think they have many staff working. However, these failures are rare events.

Overall, the service is very good IMHO for the 300 baht a month I am paying.

As my current deal runs out in February, I will renew it for 3 more months at 600 baht a month. The renewal process is simple, just a trip to the local 7-11 and make payment. No long contract at all. I like this as I don't have to pay for the months when there is no football to watch.

In February I certainly cannot be bothered getting CTH to install their equipment here, making me sign a long-term contract and getting involved with their accounts department, which according to posters on TV, is the worst accounts department they have ever been involved with. Next year will probably be the last year for CTH and the EPL anyway, so more hardware to be thrown away or store with the mountain of other obsolete hardware I have lying around the house - those 3 Dreamboxes of mine make super door-stopsrolleyes.gif

By the way, if you are interested, they have the Switzerland/England game live on Tuesday morning. I won't be getting up for that!

Anyone getting up for that game needs sectioning..

  5. This seems open now. Enjoy!

It's been open a couple weeks now; it's more of a mini-APB but they have all the basics. One thing I don't like is that it has an eastern exposure so is very bright in the morning and also gets a little toasty in there. Typical for Thailand, the chairs are chic and stylish but smallish and not very comfortable. Maybe best for takeaway or afternoon tea.

Oh no the sun is coming through the window, oh no the chairs aren't very comfortable....you gotta laugh. It's a sandwich shop in Pattaya you muppet, not the bloody Ritz in Montreal.

  6. No need to learn Thai nor change diet if you get a condo from near civilization, say the aforementioned suburbs of Pattaya for example. The only reason I can think of for moving into Isaan would be lack of money and trying to live on a shoestring budget, i.e. going totally native.

You are just thinking of Isaan as small villages and rice fields etc. You could live in a big city in Isaan, such as Khorat, Ubon, Udon and Khon Kaen, that is NOT going native.

  7. In regards to the OP, I have sometimes wondered where I "fit" in the expat community, and the only answer I can honestly come up with is: I don't fit. And, even more honestly, I don't want to fit. I'm open and friendly, known to actually start conversations at times with other foreigners I meet in restaurants and such, but bottom line is I like my privacy, and don't like anyone to intrude on it. I know half a dozen other expats, but only have interaction with one who has similar interests in bikes, but even that is limited. I'd rather be on a CBR, cruising mountain roads here in the north and north east, stopping at road side restaurants and shops, laughing and talking, or at least trying to talk, to the locals I meet, than a room full of farang and their wives, no matter how well intentioned they are.

I meet men here who are Vets, and who try to get me to join the VWF. Sorry, but that simply reminds me of the Springstein song "Glory Days", with a bunch of old men sitting around talking about how important they were, or their "war time experiences". I spent 18 of my 20 years in the Marines in Recon & Force Recon. End of story. When people find out, and start asking questions about what it was like, I change the subject. That was another life, a different "me", not forgotten, but not rehashed at every opportunity I get. I don't live there anymore.

Now my life is quiet, some would even say boring. I help my wife when I can with a new business she is starting, and I fight every day to get back the strength in my legs that I lost from a pinched sciatic nerve, followed by a stroke last October that temporarily took away my left arm and both legs. I've reached the point to where I'm looking to take a 3-5 days bike trip through the north/north east on a new Forza once rainy season is over. If that goes well, I'll start looking at the new 300cc CBR or Kawasaki for more fun.

We live in a small moo ban of 100 houses about 18k from Chiang Mai city, and that's fine with me.. Two other "farang" here. One is a German who thinks his $hit don't stink, and the other is a pot head American recluse. Both are on different soi from me so I don't have to deal with them. I love my Thai neighbors and get along well with them.

I don't drink, so the bar scene is out for me, as are other forms of "nightlife", other than dinner at a good restaurant from time to time with my wife. Some would say I'm a recluse. They're entitled, if that's what they think. It doesn't bother me. I know who I am, and what I am, as does my wife, and that's all that matters.

Good post. The way I see it is if you aint a drinker then having friends here is pretty much a waste of time. Many will disagree of course..

  8. You are wrong and your wife is smarter than you. A flu shot costs 100 baht at the government hospital. If you are so conspiratorial to believe it is about the hospital making more money.....well like I said, be grateful your wife is more rational.

As for your statement, "We never had flu vaccines when we were kids, so sorry but not convinced. Thanks anyway." Well, better not vaccinate your kid with the chicken pox vaccine either then.....cause you know....never had it when you were a kid.

Kids can die from the flu....proven fact. Straight negligence not to vaccinate your kids in this day and age. Time to step aside and start letting the wife make the medical decisions for the family.

I am stunned by some of the ignorant comments posted on this thread......facepalm.gif

    Haha, nice passion.

Thanks for your OPINION. And of course she is smarter than me, I still can't change a lightbulb.
